head job price advice lawl

just sort of curious what the thoughts of people would be towards this idea...
if you had the money ready to go, how much would you find acceptable to pay to purchase a head that has had the ports cleaned up and mildly ported?

im not claiming to be some sickunt head porter, but i can definitely clean up the factory casting marks and open up the port a bit.
i have far too much spare time, so i'm thinking of devoting some of that time to a few different products/services - one being head work.

so, how much would you pay for a head that has had the ports cleaned up, no 'porting' per say?
and how much would you pay for a head that has been mildly ported?

at first i would be selling the heads already done on ebay, so i'd be curious to hear what you would pay for the service not including the head, and what you would pay for a complete head, already done, but with no valve springs or valves - i think doing it this way will allow the buyer to use whatever valve/spring combo they wish.

any comments or thoughts about this in general would be good also :)
im not looking at going in to business or opening a shop, just looking to make a few bucks and to fill in some time.

Thought of another meaning for the title but then realised this isn't "off topic".

So how much experience have you had in porting heads, have you ever had a head flow tested before and after to see if you are attacking the right areas to gain performance.

I am not trying to be a smart ass or take the p_ss out of you I am genuinely curious.

A mate of mine had a head ported by a guy in Sydney and it actually lost power.

Be interested in hearing more.
Cheers

Ive done one tht i put on my car and it easily gained power, butno ive never had oneflow tested.
Ive also practiced on a few dead heads.
That wasnt exactly the purpose of this thread.
If it seems viable, i will do a port and have it tested, im not out to rip people off, id want to know myself how good the job ive done is.

Chargd thanks but ive already got 5 heads to practice on lol.

I guess imnot going to bother if people will only pay $100 for a head thats had the ports cleaned up and $150 for a mild job...

Are you talking 2nd hand or new/reco heads though? Changeover or the customers own head?

Please dont get too caught up in the specifics lol
I just want an idea of what people think is acceptable to pay for headwork...

Maybe would be easier for people to tell me what they want for whatever price.

I will send you a head minus valves if I accept your price.

I do not want the head surfaced planed, I want the combustion chamber opened up from 64cc to 72cc, the inlet ports I want just cleaned up not polished, the exhaust.. ports I want opened up slightly and cleaned up as well

Can you give me an estimate for this work?

- oh ok I though you meant you were looking at doing head work sorry.

I suppose it would depend on the workshop, weather they offered hand finish work or CNC , I would think most of the big shops do CNC work so that expensive.

A local guy up here who has a big name in the performance industry charges between $1000 and $2000 that just basic CNC and flowed.

A lot to will come into play is the skills of the guy doing the work, experience, proven track record.

Anyway best of luck in your venture

Complete JMM CNC head, $100. :D

I just want an idea of what people think is acceptable to pay for headwork...

It's hard to say when you're just talking about porting. Most people who get 'head work' done are getting it decked, a crack-test, new valves/seats/guides etc, as well as the porting.

$100-$150 seems reasonable for a port job on an alloy head that hasn't been flow-tested or CC'd.

JMM advertise reco DEV heads for $590, and the Street-Fighter heads for $1050.

Aaron i would get one head flow tested and then use that as my guide.
Id also be able to cc the chamber easily.

What about $150 for a clean up and $250 for a mild port job not including the cost of the head?

Too expensive IMO.

Even going off JMM's prices (we all know what we think about their prices), you're saying that crack-testing, decking, valve stem seal replacement, valve seat replacement and valve seating is worth $340.

Considering i was laughed at for suggesting $170 was too much for a thermostat housing with a cap welded to it, i would have thought $150 was an ok price.

Meh

The problem was you asked about it.

Best plan would be to register a new account called bh performance. Charge your prices and let the customers roll in.

Make a few noobs happy and you get instant Internet forum stardom which compounds the customer base. Mass profits to be made.

Do a few cheapies that you think are "about right", buy a flow bench and then do some that you can prove are good.

Theres a company in australia that makes flow benches that are fairly reasonably priced.

+1 what dan said.

I've thrown out literally hundreds of ford 6cyl heads that look like new because they were too soft . You going to test heads before you waste your time and someone else's on them?

I tried this already, done a 4L head fully reco'd and ported, struggled to sell on eBay and ended up getting $300 when someone finally bought it.

$150 to get rid of casting marks is too much as well.

if you can get them on a flow chart or before and after dyno and there is a gain then i would say 150 is a decent price.
i would be happy to pay a couple and hundred depending

I recently got a brand new Mexico OHC head, then had it ported, and built with SS valves and 125lb crow springs.

The head cost me $600, and the porting cost $500.
The before and after flowchart, showed a 71% increase in flow across the board.

Here's a few pics -

I believe it was in the region of 350hp n/a, but I will have to dig up the flow spec sheet.

It's hiding somewhere at the moment.

71% increase.....where? Thinking there is much smoke and mirrors with your flow sheets! BTW, all flow figures are NA. No flowbench can simulate boost pressure

They flow approx 370cfm in std form on the inlet at 450ish thou lift, do the maths. 350hp intake is stock as a rock
