Hi,
Im about to go into battle at wsid dragway with my dad. What will our cars run?
Dads: EL Fairmont Ghia, tickford 6, tri-y extractors, high flow cat, 2.5 inch sports exhaust, K&N Panel, automatic, 3.45 diff ratio, 141,000km, In perfect order. Standard 15 inch wheels 225/60 series tyres
Mine: EL Fairmont 5.0, tri-y extractors, twin cats, 2.5 inch single sports exhaust, no resonator, K&N Panel filter, automatic transmission, 3.45 diff ratio, 82,000km, in perfect order, standard 15 inch wheels 215/60 series.
Its basically the same car, same automatic, same diff gears, same mods, 6 vs 8? what will we run and who will win??
Mr review of driving both...
Dads: Tickford 6, give it a bootfull and it gradually keeps building power to about 5500rpm, when it changes into second it feels like its doing another 10km/h over the 5.0
Mine: Big torque for quick off the line, it doesnt really feel to build up much more power, changes up about 5500rpm but feels a bit strangled in the top end. definately feels better down low but the 6 feels like it gets up a bigger head of steam. I reckon the 5.0 chnages up into second doing about 5-10km less than the 6. How is that when the ratios in the auto and the diff are the same??

IMO
the 8 will have the 6 off the line.
my guess you will both run mid to low 15's
my guess 5.0 for the win

I think if your launch and shift techniques are identical, the 6 should just win.

Both cars will put on a boring 15 second show and wsid fans will boo them.

Forgot you've got an auto, so it'd just be down to launch. 2200 stall? That's how I got the perfect launch when mine was auto.

We seem to have a mixed bag of responses. Looks like it will be close. Ill be pissed if my V8 loses to the old mans 6.

If my info is right the 5.0 has one more kw than the I6 but the I6 is lighter. They both run the same gearing but the 5.0 has smaller tyres.
Assuming both cars get traction, both drivers know how to race, it will be very close.

LTDHO do you have the torque figures on hand as well?? How do they compare. I'm guessing the 8 will have about 20lb/ft more than the 6 which will help it a bit.

they are pretty even stock, but stock the 5.0 has 3.23 gears, mine has 3.45 gears. I reckon the 3.45 gears in the 8 should see the win..
Look what happened with the EL to AU XR8, just different diff gears and all of a sudden its heaps quicker than XR6.

To "cheat" with your launch, rev in N to about 5000rpm then drop into D (while keeping on the gas) when the lights turn green. Guaranteed results!

because when people run away from the bang of your gearbox sh1ttnig itself, thinking its a bomb, they won't see you lose.

Sorry wasnt having a go mate just going on from what commando said. do you have the factory torque figures for both your and your dads cars?? I reckon that would be your only hope.

I am pretty sure my old ED 6cyl was about the same 'quickness' (if you could call it that) than my current LWB 5.0 with a couple of mods... I struggle to tell the difference honestly... Pretty fukn disappointing really.

Plus, having a single 2.5 exhaust on a 5L will choke it. Not to mention slightly thinner tyres

2.5 is quite a good size for the 5.0 in stock/ish-mild form. Hence me rendering your quote as a failure.

I thought a single 2.5 is only adequate for a 4L. A 3 inch being more appropriate for a 5L

So based on that logic a 1.25 inch is adequate for a 2L?
E-Series 5.0s are wheezy truck engines, having a large exhaust (3") on an otherwise stock motor isn't going to do it any favours, apart from change the sound

Says he with a large exhaust on a stock-ish 5.0

Either you haven't changed the speedo sensor and ECU to suit the 3.45 that was fitted to the 5.0, or the 5.0 doesn't have a 3.45 diff.
Look what happened with the EL to AU XR8, just different diff gears and all of a sudden its heaps quicker than XR6.
You forgot to mention the AU having GT40P heads, 65mm throttle, 70mm MAF, 4-1 extractors and ECU tuning as well. Plus the EL2 XR8 had a 3.45 diff anyway.
Stock V8 = slow.

Don't listen to these fools. The V8 should hose it if you can drive it properly.
My lightly modified EL Ghia V8 spanked most E-series 6s. Except for the ones with big cams and manual. I was still quicker than my bros EF XR6 with Dev 4 and 3.7s

Both ran 14.8s, but mine had bigger mph.

yeah fag because I smashed your shitter convincingly on the street everytime. Mine would have gone 14.5 easy before it's demise.

psst who gives a **** I answered this thread in reply #3 it will be a draw, a dead heat, even, you will both run exactly the same time at exactly the same KPH.
BTW David my
woulda time woulda beat your 14.78.

I concede the theoretical win to Damo

Anyhoo they'll both lose. The six will blow its gasket by the 60' mark, and the V8 won't even pass the halfway mark after the inhibitor switch fails & goes nuts

the six will pull a better skid, making it winner by default.
