Affordable front brake upgrade for e-series!

Postby private9 » February 23rd, 2008, 7:52 pm

Hi Guys,

Went past a brake place the other day, and they have affordable front brake upgrades available!

The 2 affordable kits are as follows:

VT Calipers and rotors (297mm) - pad size is nearly twice the size of the e series ones. - $1025 supplied including performance pads.
Will fit 15" rims

BA Calipers and rotors (320 something mm) - pad size is twice the size of e series. - $1125 supplied including performance pads.
Need 16"+ rims

Best of all, they retain the e-series offset!

The place is located in Campbellfield VIC, and is called Just Brakes. 9308 9616.

They also offer fitting for $250 + fluid, but it's all a straight bolt in, so wouldn't be too difficult to do yourself.

I'm looking forward to getting a set!

Thanks,

Justin.

Yep, don't think you're going to find anything cheaper, other than your typical slotted rotors and pads upgrade which sucks balls.

Under 1200 for a decent set if bloody unreal!!!

You gents/ladies need to start ordering that stuff, to encourage them to do more development!

I wonder if they are working on anything bigger

I'll have to see if they can sort me out with an AU offset kit 8-)

Rollin, there was also a 3rd upgrade option. I can't remember the specifics, but it was BF Brembos and IIRC the price was around $2800 which again, is very reasonable.

I would've ordered on the spot, except I'm supposed to be picking up a turbo kit this weekend.

Hell yeah that is pretty decent. I was just thinking about an affordable way to make the brakes better the other day. I thought why hasn't anyone thought of installing a second set of calipers. Make some sort of adapter plate and get a second stock caliper on the front discs.

There is probably a hundred things wrong with the idea but I'm trying to think outside of the box... 8-)

Anyway these are very affordable though and might be just what I need next time I have to spend money on brakes. Which isn't far off, I need to replace at least one piston dust boot that I know is cactus already. Pads will need doing before the end of the year too I think, and depending on the thickness of the discs they might have to be renewed as well.

bunch of ferraris have twin calipers on the front, not as stupid an idea as you think...
not sure how it'd go fitting an eseries though

The problem with running two calipers is that the area available for the disc to shed heat is reduced, so while you can grip the disc harder, you generate more heat, and it has nowhere to go. Bigger discs have more mechanical advantage on the wheel, and a larger surface area with which to dissipate heat - you're better off using stock calipers on oversize discs than running oversize calipers on stock discs IMHO.

Luxo_8 - post pics of said ferraris - I've never heard of twins on the front. Some of the old two litre super tourers used to run twin tiny calipers on the rears, I'm not sure why though. I know that some supercars run twin calipers on the rear also, but one is there exclusively as a hand brake, and the other is only for 'service brakes'.

So how exactly does this all work being BA Rotors.. They are a different hub/bearing and brake setup to e-series?? Do they use off the shelf rotors and calipers or modified?

OED - sorry mate, no pics or referrals.

CMYWPN wrote:they use au2 calipers with el gt rotors, i got ba calipers with el gt rotors which is better cos the ba caliper is far more bigger with more friction surface.

They told me the cheapest kit uses VT calipers & rotors and the $100 more kit uses BA calipers & rotors which are a touch bigger than AU2/3.

It is awfully good value if it is what they say.

If anyone would like to donate a set of spindles I will post up how to do the VT Caliper conversion using your current rotors. Total cost to do it is about $200 + the cost of braided lines if you want to be fancy. Just need a set so I can take pictures as I go for the tute. Mod time is 4 to 6 hours.

Sorry buddy, i was rushing thru the post at work and missed it. Thanks

I just called them up they are ADR approved.
They supply:
An adaptor to mount the caliper to the spindle (do not modify ba caliper or spindle at all)
Standard rotors, Ba calipers and braided lines.
And they actually have a specially fabricated hub that contains the bearings and fixes itself to the spindle. This would have the wheel studs pressed into it obviously and then your rotor slides over, then wheel on. Basically the same way a BA is designed.

I asked if they can supply only the caliper adaptor and hub but they said NO :( GOT TO BUY THE WHOLE LOT...
There is often BA calipers dirt cheap about forums or ebay and aftermarket rotors are dirt cheap trade price, about $90 a pair. Thought we might be able to save a little? These type of mods i struggle to justify because its worth more than half of my car cost!

if there is not modification to the spindles, why are they on an exchange basis?

CMYWPN spindle mod = $600 plus postage
EL GT Rotors - $600 plus postage
BA Calipers = ???
Bracket for Calipers = ???
Braided Lines = ???

So far thats $1200. Its possible for it to be around $1500 I reckon...

well... there goes that mod... group buy + 11ty billion!!!

He was a bit all over the shop with the info. I hate talking on the phone to places like this, going in personally is the go to get facts and prices 100%

This is very tempting indeed, although to go to the BA caliper version I would have to ditch the 15" wheels. Might be worth it though! Just go to some modest 17" wheels or something.

Hey mate, I should be back there in the next fortnight, so I'll go find out then. If you need an answer earlier though, I'm pretty sure I've got their number in the first post.
I hope they are the original prices, as they're more than reasonable! If they are, as soon as I finish spending on my other car, I'll grab a set for sure.
Thanks,

FUCKING RETARDED!!!

I had the mula ready to pay for the brakes... but... they arent the correct offset. Its pretty much the kit that Dr Hemi was on about ages ago. Its also the same brake kit thats up on ebay.

The offset is in no-mans land... And i mentioned that to the guys... unfortunately its completely useless. Either go e-series or au offset. pretty simple really. why bother R&D on a product, and then manufacture something thats not suitable. FARK!!!

looks like the money is now going towards a turbo kit instead. :D

Agreed!

I apologise for getting everyone excited over these brakes, but they did assure me they were e-series offset. I did question this twice. Glad I didn't order in the end.

So what the hell are they for? Seems like a pretty big design problem. What would you have to do to get them on our cars?

I'm confused!
