DUMP Pipes????

Ok I am so confused, we went down to our local exhaust shop and asked him what sort of money would we be looking at to change the straight out chrome tip on the read of the exhaust to a 3" dump pipe.

Now come the confusing part he tells us they are illegal in QLD so i ask why he said if they pull up and rev up your engine and any dust or such come up off the ground/road they will defect your car, I laughed he said no I am serous they are illegal .

So I Google this question and couldn't find any answered except that dump pipes finishing in-front of the read axle are illegal but nothing saying if the extend to the read like a normal exhaust tile was illegal.

I decided to ring the local police station and ask the question the reply was {"mate I haven't heard this and as far as I know its ok, BUT then again I have to be honest and say I really don't knows the laws concerning this"} maybe you should contact an engineer who blue plated the vehicle.

So ok I rang the engineer and he said ( this is new to him and he only knew that dumps ending at the rear axle were illegal and wasn't sure about dump pipes ending at the rear of the car but he didn't see any issues with it).

Next I rang the DMT and posed the same question the answer was ( well I will need to look into that question for you I can not give you a answer, it's the first time I have been asked that question give me your name and a contact number and I will get back to you).

Now I replies its ok I can ring your in a few days to see what you come up with, he said well ok if you prefer to do it that way.

So now I am asking if anyone has any ideas on here.

Cheers.

First I've heard, but back home its a pretty common thing to do when you get green stickered (NZ version of a defect) because when they test the exhaust volume the mic has to be a certain distance from the exhaust, at a certain angle. By using a dumpy your pointing the noise away from the mic, and has a result the Db count drops a little. At least according to the tester anyway.
Good to do if your just over the limit.

First I've heard of it also, I've had a few cops walk around mine in its time and never had a drama, but in saying that, they do blow a bit of dust on the dirt when parked.

You'll find 3" is too small and they just look wierd. 3.5 looks better, I want a 4" though.

It's complete bull, who said and exhaust has to come straight out the rear, how man factory cars have the rear tailpipe facing down? Most 4wds and falcon with out a sports rear bar, (no cutout for sports tip) mine kicks dust when I rev it...

This is what is required for your situation:

The outlet of an exhaust system fitted to a motor vehicle must extend behind the back seat, at least 40mm beyond the outermost loint of the floor pan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed, and must discharge the main exhaust flow to the air horizontally or at an angle of not more that 45* downwards, and to the rear of the vehicle.

That's paraphrased from the QLD Vehicle Standards and Safety Regulation, I'm pretty sure that had been taken from ADR's. Don't know why factory cars can get away with 'dump' tips (astras and falcons etc). Must be because they're a manufacturer.

Ok some light on the subject now---- I spoke to a machinery inspector in Brisbane he run me through the ADR 42 regulations (10.1.2) and LA41 Codes (2.7).

He put it in simple terms and said dump pipes are not illegal if the comply with the ADR42.

Now in his words ( if you were to place a level horizontal to the exhaust and then use a 45deg angle and it meet or was under the 45deg then is legal simple as that, so his advice was to fit the dump tip and if needed just bend the read tail pipe to make it read 45deg at the tip end of story.)

Disturbing dust etc when revving the engine does not come into any regulations so he told me as well.

As to the testing of exhaust noise levels he said ( they can test the vehicle with a dump tip with out any issues if the do the testing as per regulations.)

The reason the Falcon BA / BF and many other vehicle are legal is because the tail pipe end was at 45deg or under.

oh yer also did you know that up sweep tips are illegal as well :banghead:

cheers

Mine would only be 30-40 degrees at a guess, It'd look ass if it was more then 45 degrees anyway.

....So...he told you what I already did. Probably because we were looking at the exact same legislation.

Good job.
