lpg and its effects

didn't know whether to put it under 6 cyl tech or tutbo so added it to the general discussion.

anyway my question is, I was thinking of running my EA MPI on LPG. Later on, say a year or so in time, there is a distinct possibility that the car will see a turbo. Are there any dramas i need to be aware of running a turbo off LPG fuel? Will it work as per running on normal fuel? Turbo setup be more complicated? Thanks in advance.

i turned my ED to a dual fual, i regretted it. it takes a long time for the gas system to settle in ( 3 months later it still bugs me) also the power drop is a bit annoying and makes the car heavier. also the price of gas atm is stupid, its costing just about as much to run gas as it is to run petrol which makes it pointless. dont ask me about the turbo factor, but i will be looking at it towards the end of the year, trying to work out weather to get another car and start again or try and make it work on this one.. anyway thats my thoughts

EFFalcon runs a turbo on LPG. He has dual fuel but never uses petrol. It goes well on gas (180rwlw off memory) and is still cheap to run on gas.

So no issues, you may need to get a bigger convertor (or two) but the rest will be fine.

thanks, yeh the price of gas is stupid especially since they jacked it up to make more profits off the people converting to gas the bloody profit dogs, but if you check out the price of petrol its even more ridiculous........ i did some reading on fordmods re gas and turbo, it sounds a bit more complicated and pricey but nevertheless it does work.. decisions decisions. thanks.

LPG = Cooking a BBQ
Petrol = Balls
C16 and E85 = real mans fuel.

the gas system should be fine, just make sure you get a good one, don't ask me about exact types, but i know there are better versions out there, and they settle down alot quicker etc, but yea i wouldn't do it again but its a personal choice

yeh that is true, i rekn your better paying the extra dollar for something good seeing how it is carrying out the fuelling of the car and since fuel is required to run the thing, if you have a problem with the lpg then its gonna effect everything. I got a quote of 2700 from a reputable place in sydney, so would cost me 700 bux for it. i rekn its worth it and it will probably save me money doubly in that not only will i save on fuel, it'll probably end up limiting me to just the usual mods so that i don't throw away 5k on turbo gear..

yea true, i spent all of 250 bucks, was done through a mate, was just an everyday system, saved me about 150$ but yea the system is still trying to settle down, it struggles to get power when takeing off from lights, or after corners, its not a good thing, if i try and accelerate through it then it ends up back firing, which is a problem..

LPG installs dont settle down. Take it to a good LPG place for a tune.

Maybe then you will have the power to surprise.

i've got LPG + turbo... its easy! :D
oh and get an LPG tune... a new install will generally go out of tune within a few weeks as the converter gets run in.

doesn't that tell you that you should try some place else? Having it go out of tune within a couple of weeks (edit: repeatedly, after the converter has run-in as EFFalcon stated) is unacceptable. Mine did the same thing until I went to another LPG specialist (and these people actually knew what they were doing), I've only had it backfire twice within the past six months now, both times were due to sudden acceleration. (Hot days, city traffic one time, overtaking uphill the other time)

My LPG system is far more tempremental than petrol, but I find that if I just cruise around when on gas, the car doesn't complain.

what can they actually adjust really?
mine has a large screw to adjust the amount and it leans it or richens it but other then that i dont think they do much.
where do you get yours done?

lol at the kia thread i read it too but i know i've done stupid stuff in my car so i won't give him any shit for doing something that most young males would do. Thats for the act of racing a car, whatever car it is. Losing to a Kia is another story, but oh well.

Can anyone enlighten me on the issue of backfiring? Because most of the time i'm just cruising, but on the odd occasion i do like to go some "sik skids" or push all the way through first and second.. this sort of behaviour is a no-no with LPG?? What use would the EA have then?!? (jks)

yea, well if it wasn't going to cost me money to get it tuned somewhere else i would, but anyway most of the time cruising is fine, but when taking off from the lights or around corners i lose it all, so i swap it back to petrol for those times... anyway when the gas is running well its awesome to have, and alot of the time it seems to have a little more kick to it, but when it runs bad its really freeking bad

LPG relies a lot more on the electrical side of your engine if your plugs/leads/coilpacks or distributor and associated components are down in condition this will show up in the form of backfiring and hesitation under acceleration

after the first few weeks of running a car on LPG, as in a new install, it is best to get it retuned as the rubber diaphrams in the convertor will strech and settle in once tuned properly you shouldnt have any more dramas for a while

My opinion on LPG is that it is a great fuel spend some time researching it on the net it can be used quite freely and easily in performance applications

I <3 LPG.

Its all that works on the maverick and its worked perfect for nearly 2 years.

I want to get it put on the EF soon.

depends completely on the LPG setup.
most will simply be a main mixture screw/nut and an idle mixture and thats about all.

other systems have a few more things to consider like closed loop control, progressive mixtures, WOT mixtures, idle mixtures etc.

Are you going to cut a round hole through the bonnet next & have the air filter poking out? :P
