ea engine, can anyone gimme a rough estimate of power

sorta newb question..

ea s mpi, has 138kw from factory, im guesing around 80 kw at the wheels now given the engine has gone around for 250xxx kms or so.. without a dyno, would this figure reach a general consensus?

im looking to a) turbo which would be pretty exxy for my budget, or b) NA, which is looking more an more likely as much as i would love it to go turbo.

pretty much what i want to know is where is my money best spent for performance. i dont care about top kw output, i just want it to go harder like we all do.. without spending too much, what is my best bet? it already has a 2.5 cat back and i think a 3.45 LSD, it is 5 speed already..

i was thinking just going some extractors second hand off the forums. what would my gain be aside from the sound, and what else would i be looking at getting? or would throwing in an entire el engine be better since they're pretty cheap and give 158kw at the flywheel or something similar? or maybe keeping the current engine, which by the way runs like a gem, and installing the dual stage inlet manifold off an el and run an el ecu for it (is this simple?). thermo fans also? ive noticed a fair few write ups on the install, what gain is expected from their use?

doing the figures for a turbo and the way i want it is getting a bit over the top, and i never really considered the NA 6 until now so i don't have too much knowledge on it but yeh... wanna toughen her up because she really is a great car, i just want midrange power more than anything else, 400kw at 5000 rpm isnt really for me, i want the stuf at 2500 or so, for daily use... and i wanna keep the engine closed so no porting the head etc. any help greatly appreciated.

An LSD is good (3.45). Really livened up my car, cost $500 installed by Kev (Schmee). It was an ED XR6 LSD from a wreck. Extractors improve flow and are highly recommened if you ever consider a cam of some sort.
I have NFI about the benefits of a BBM but sounds complicated. Thermo fans are said to be better to reduce load on the engine (however, some of the veterans on here say theres nothing wrong with the existing clutch fan which seems a valid point - viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2604
Thats all I can really suggest

thanks for the link about thermos mate, didn't know much about them before. won't convert having read that.

I remember when I was reading up about the EA a couple months ago before purchasing it, i think it has a 3.45 LSD as standard on the S? am i correct? goes through the gears nicely so i think it might have the 3.45, just wondering if it is standard...

and yeh, i was reading some articles which said that the bbm was "worth its weight in gold". while that may be an over exaggeration, surely somehting must have bumped up the power between ed and ef, and i figure the main difference between the two is the addition of the bbm so yeh.. I'll definately have a read of it and post my findings on any potential benefits it would give us..

would extractors do the greater part of sweet fark all using the standard cam? i mean, obviously if the recondition the head for more flow, better cam etc, the extractors will give better results than on a stock engine, but are the benefits they give on a stocker worth their while?

post the bbm stuff soon, thanks

Do a tiny standstill to see if its LSD or not ;)
As for the benefits of extractors, I'll let u know next week ;)

EA S-packs came with a 2.92 diff standard (for the T5), 2.77 if a 3 speed & 3.23 if a BTR.

Are you certain your EA has a 3.45, assuming you're thinking you have a 3.45 based on what you've just said?

Gerendasi is on the money (good work, that's what we'd all like to see more of!), 3.45 + EA T5 would be a great combo for the street. 1st gear *may* be getting a bit short by that stage as the EA T5 has a shorter 1st gear than later boxes.

BBM's design is a series of long runners that the intake travels through below 3800rpm (for more torque), and short runners (for more power) above 3800rpm, with the flow path dictated by a series of butterflies. Several members on here have converted to BBM.

I'm not up with extractors on the sixes so I can't offer advice here. Some are better suited to midrange power (Pacemaker 4480s for example), and some are suited to power higher up (EDIT corrected: Pacemaker 4499s - see below)

As far as I've heard from people around here, the 'old' 4480s give good power down low, the 4499s give better power mid-high and the 'new' 4480s supposedly give sustained power benefits all through the range, supposedly

thanks for the help boys..

not so certain any more aha :).. its got the 5 spd so t5 ,so i guess its 2.92 going from what you've just said.. aha, not a figures whore so i didn know........

i neva tried going at it sideways at any real speed so i wouldn't know which wheels are spinning, would i have a normal diff or a lim slip diff? based on the standard ea manual mpi spac?

replacing it with a 3.45 center or even higher seems quite attractive for street application since itd climb to 100 i mean 60kmh much quicker..

thanks for helping a noob
