Au manual conversion, how much?

At the moment I'm weighing up the pros and cons of doing a manual conversion.

I'm not in a position where I can do the work myself, and I need the car off the road for a minimal time.

Can anyone recommend a workshop in Brisbane that will do it, and not completely ass rape me?

What sort of costs labour wise would I be looking at?

I'd be trying to source all the parts myself. Other than a custom driveshaft, everything should be easy enough to find.

Oh, v8 t5's... How do you tell them from a 4.0 one? I understand the input shafts are different, is it as easy as counting the spline?

V8 T5 has the starter lower down. And it's an expensive proposition, I sold my AU V8 manual conversion for $1500 without even trying.

Starters lower down as states and the input shaft has the same amount of splines. But is roughly 30-40mm longer

Cheers

Would I be right in assuming the only v8 specific parts I'd need is the t5 and flywheel?
Everything else could come out of a wrecker spec 4.0l au?

Thats where the expense is. Might pay to have a chat to xr8boy, he's wrecking a manual AU XR8 ute.

That would be the smart way to go, I'd get the brake conversion stuff then at the same time.

Definitely the best way to go for a V8 conversion. 6cyl manual conversion parts tend to be easier to find and cheaper, V8 stuff tends to command drug money!

Wreck out the remains and come out neutral or ahead if you do it well enough!

Checking out an au1 xr8 manual after work tomorrow, apparently he wants 2k for it. Going by the description its an unloved scruffy one, so hopefully get it even cheaper.
Knowing my luck the t5 is looser than a 50 year old hooker.

James - check it out, at that price, the manual conversion will cost next to nothing providing you can sort out a tailshaft for the right price. AU manual shafts are shorter than Audi's.

Yeah but there's a massive price difference between series 1 and 2/3.

Ideally a rolled series three would be the donor. Then I could use the entire driveline, but for the sakes of all the manual gear then there's no real disadvantage going the series 1. Just wont get as much for any bits I sell off.

Hell, knowing me il change my mind in a week and buy a vz ss for a donor.

Yeah, I read tony martins thread on aff, he reckoned there's no tail shaft that's a straight fit, he got a custom one made up for $400, which seemed pretty cheap. I thought they would be a lot more.
