Brokendown ED GLi falcon problems please HELP!

Postby ultraforce » March 8th, 2008, 5:55 pm

I have been given a 1993 ED GLi that was stiiting for a year.

It has been overheated and breaks fan belts.

I have done this work so far

Remove radiator and reverse flush. Cleaned fins (full of dirt, dead birds and hair) caused by transmission fluid leak.
Installed fan shroud. Found by a fence next to car.
Installed new thermostat, tested at 91 deg and opens more than old one and old one opens at 100 and closes at 97.
Found alternator bolt stripped thread on alternator so removed it and fixed thread.

Car will not get out of second gear, transmission faulty?

found at 80k car will keep cool and engine runs faily well. No smoke or knocks.

After test found water pump leaks.

Broke belt (Not tight enrough?)

Just really wanting to know what goes wrong with the transmissions on these cars and it has a new water pumps but leaks out of a pipe on the back of the pump that runs under the exhaust. Is this a common area for leaks?

Please help!

do you have plenty of trans fluid? if its stuck in 2nd it may be in limp home mode, though i thought that was 3rd.

RE water leaks, that pipe on the back of the waterpump required a new o-ring when the pump got replaced. if you pull off the pump now, to replace it, you will have to silastic the paper gasket between the pump and its back plate (you'll see when you get it off). use plenty of silastic on the oring too.

RE cooling, sounds like the fan clutch is fucked. new clutch.

belts may be a combination of the above, or are they TOO tight?

check the wiring to the transmission, a broken wire can confuse the computer, i had a similar thing happen on my EL.
also a tranny service kit may help, how many k's has it done?

It will likely be stuck in 3rd, not 2nd. It'll be in Limp Home mode which can be caused by a number of reasons.

Does it drive normally at all before coming stuck in 3rd, or does it start up and drive in 3rd only?

stuffed torque converter will make it feel like a stally, without the bonus factor, & it'd just lose torque multiplication feeling gutless & needing to rev everywhere

Ok,

Waterpump done, it was new anyway but last installer ripped the o ring cos it had no "lip" to go in to, was just slicing it as it went in so I made a lip for it to sit on before it went in. So waterpump 100% ok.

Belt on and very tight, so should be 100%

Engine runs now but stalls when you take you foot off the gas.

Still stuck in third gear.

pulled the bottom off the trans and cleaned everything.

Still stuck in 3rd gear.

Are there diagnostic codes?
