Carbied EA

G'day Fellas,

First post on the forums. I recently acquired an EA series 2 1990 S Pack Falcon. Its not in bad nick for it's age and i do enjoy driving it.

I decided to give it a service, see if I could improve fuel consumption on it with new plugs, filters, timing etc. I used some choice words and threw tools across the garage and cursed at Ford Australia for whacking MPEFI Manifold smack bang right on top of Dizzy! Being used to working on Holden red motors and the V6 in the commies I was less then impressed with Fords setup!

I have decided that this MPEFI Manifold has to go! Do any of the later model Falcons interfere with the dizzy? I know EF ran coil packs so maybe this might solve my problem. Other thing I looked at is place called Aussiespeed. They a do a custom Manifold for EA through to AU to run a 2 or 4 barrel Holley, they also sell custom dizzzy's so you can get rid of the ECU and run it old school which would suit me fine as I'm old school anyway.

Now I'm not overly concerned with fuel consumption running a Holley, it can't be worse than it is now with MPEFI. It uses 80% more fuel than my VY does and that's probably an understatement.

So will a later model falcon Fuel injection not interfere with the dizzy or hinder access to it? How legal is to run a Holley on it?

Cheers guys!

If it's for the street the. The coppers will tear you a new backside when they see the aussiespeed manifold and a dirty big Holley sitting in there.

If it's that thirsty then there's something wrong. Got some actual consumption figures?

If you arent concerned with fuel consumption why did you service it to improve fuel consumption?

I'd say I'm probably getting around 16/18 per/100km driving around in Suburbs dropping down to 11/12 on highway. it may well need new vacuum hoses and sensors replaced as well.

Yep, I thought the Holley might be a wee problem lol. The idea of a Holley on it was to give better access to dizzy which is why I also asked if later model Falcons had a better setup such as AU/BA giving better access to dizzy. If not then I'd be looking at EF coil packs and EF ECU.

If I can improve fuel consumption with EFi I'll take it. If I were to run a Holley on it which gives me better access to the Dizzy but with worse fuel consumption I can live with that too.

Bottom line... it needed a service as I had no idea when last owner did one.

For what a new aussiespeed manifold, and a new Holley would cost would be dearer than buying a mint e series.

The BBM manifold isn't much better. But how often do you need to get to the distributer?

I'd leave it as is. If not why not convert it to cpfi? Standard type of set up. Came factory.

Cheers

Once you've done the leads, rotor and cap you won't need to touch it for 50,000km. Buy the cheap black bosch supercheap leads also - they are actually the best money can buy, even though they're cheap as chips.

Make sure the balancer hasn't slipped and put it in diagnostic mode (google...) set the base timing to standard or standard+1 or 2 degrees, make sure it's got a new fuel filter and 02 sensor and you're laughing.

Thanks Guys for all your replies. Tomorrow it's going in to have a few things checked and some work done on it. I'll see how she goes after that. I don't need to get to dizzy much at all, just to change Rotor and Cap and Leads etc. Just annoyed I don't have fingers like E.T to get in there! I didn't want to go pulling the Manifold off just to change those things.

Thanks again Fella's !

It's not that bad. Take the idle air control motor off the top of the throttle body and you get heaps more room to work.

Also use a long flat blade screwdriver to pop the clips off the cap.

Can generally get the clips off by going in the spaces between manifold runners and sometimes even the head.

Cheers

Thanks Rollin and SnipeZ for the heads up. Yep, got it. Bit patience and remain calm  Might replace all the sensors next. Cheers guys!
