Raptor superchargers, pros? Cons?

Just looking at their website the au v8 pro street system is 6k, how much else would I need to spend to get this running all good in my fairlane?

System includes

Parts included
• Raptor V supercharger with L option now standard - 20% less inertia for quicker acceleration
• 41lb DENSO injectors
• Polished pipework with pod adaptor included
• High strength bracket and idlers
• 6PK SC drive belt
• Air intake system
• Fitting instructions
• 32mm BOV anodised
• XCAL 3 Flash tuner with Generic tune

How much do I allow for tuning? Or is it a 'how long is a piece of string' type question?

I thinking of going the raptor because it seems to be a fairly straight forward upgrade, with reasonable power gains.

Obviously turbo would be better, but would need to be all custom, and I'd have to pay someone to do that, so not an option.

Just a tune. And possibly a maf but on stock engine shouldn't be needed.
Tune would be $700-1200?

My brothers goes great, 306rwkw with afr 185's which are a tad big but i had them sitting around.
stock bottom end with new pistons which dropped comp to 9.0:1 would be better off left at stock 9.5:1

Interesting, what motor is your brother running? I'm guessing better power would be had by a 200/220 motor than a 175 like mine?

Edit, his running afr's pretty much negates what motor it started out as lol

Pro's: its a blower  and more power

Cons: internal belt seems like its a bit average and a few people have issues with it.

I've seen a few cheap (2k) used powerdyne/vortech blower kits around in the last 12 months, probably due to the old 5L not being as popular as it once was...

The other thing is spending about $7000 on a blower kit seems crazy when you can pick up other cars so cheap these days.

Cost me $7k on the road, including a full day worth of custom dyno tuning and the xcal. Stock 200kW motor with a single 3" exhaust and 100 cell cats, made 255rwkW through a 5 speed. The belts only let got when I tried to use in a burnout comp and a track day. Other than that it is still my favourite street car ever! Would definitely do it again! One of the things I loved about it was how simple it is to put together, made me feel like I actually had talent!

Ironically that's one of the deciding factors in doing it, these things are worth nothing now. Not worth selling, anything I buy il spend money on anyway, and then just have something like another xr6t, or ss or whatever.

But a supercharged barge, that has a nice ring to it. Plus long term I'd like either build a nice t3 or eb gt replica. Perfect drive train for that.

I'd hold out for a Vortech.

Aren't they heaps more expensive though?

Capa website (no idea if current) shows $6-$8k

The Vortech's require oil lines for cooling yes? This was why I went for the Raptor instead, much easier to install.

You use to be able to buy vortech v2 second hand from Cappa. Think they were $1500 . Could give them a buzz.

Yes, most Vortech's require external oil lines.
V3's, don't but i'm not not sure if they mount differently.

regardless... no internal belt to worry about :)

The internal belt doesn't really worry me too much, probably the only times it would get driven hard would be the occasional 1/4 run at willow bank, the rest of the time it will just be a normal streeter.

Plus don't the raptors develop most of the power higher in the revs? So in theory a bit more gentle on the bottom end. Not developing boost from idle like a vortech.

Vortech and raptor are both centrifugal supercharger's and make boost the same way. The more you rev it the more they make.

Man a turbo kit could be easily made for 7k, and would have way more head room and sound sick haha.

That's the trouble though, 'be easily made' , I dont have the patience, knowledge or equipment to do any fab work myself, paying someone to do it would cost way more I reckon, plus it would be off the road for ages. And theses no off the shelf kits to fit these.

Like ev says, these things are easy to fit, I can fit it over a weekend and get it tuned during the week.
Might do some research on the vortechs though, although the oil lines is a bit of a bummer.

I'm not chasing bulk power, anywhere around 220+ rwkw and I'd be stoked. Be quick for a lane.

I guess I'd be paying more for the convenience and ease of installation.

For what you're wanting , raptor is sounding perfect.

Exactly the same resoning that led me to purchase a Raptor. The first install after purchase took me around 8 hours, and I'm a complete numpty! By the time I'd got rid of it, I was so adapt at it, one night I went from boosted to NA driveable at half time of the footy, and was back on the couch for first bounce of the 3rd quarter!

The way I went about it with the first install was I bought the kit of Tim, minus the xcal. I then purchased the xcal off Dion at DynoMite, as he was able to give it to me with a base tune before he'd seen the car, so it was driveable pre-dyno. I believe Tim can also deliver the xcal with a base tune too though if you buy the full kit.

As I have mentione before, the only trouble I ever had with belts was when I tried to thrash the nust off it on a track. Once Dion sorted the tune for me, it didn't give me a lick of trouble on the street for over a year! Best daily I have ever had. A+ would create again!

Yeah, by the sounds of your needs, a Raptor would be pretty ideal.

Yeah I'd go the raptor too then.

Complete kit or just the pump? Because the mounting plate is quite particular, it'd be difficult to fab one up from scratch.

I've looked at the Raptor kit for the E-series and I spoke to Tim about getting one with the billet impeller and the liquid-cooled drive - was about $5700 but that's sans injectors and Xcal. The Vortechs seem to be more expensive and the bracketry is apparently pretty shoddy.
