how do you get a old car like new

how else do get a car thats over 20 years old with over 300000 km a bit more reliable even though the e series are good cars that might need some work when you dont have the $$ to do it all at once.
what have you guys done to make your e series like new and more reliable, what parts have yous fitted
also when sanding panels ready for paint what grade do you start with and how long do you sand to make the primer stick really good
