What a shit of a day.....do you have Ambulance membership ??

Postby Schmee » May 28th, 2008, 1:29 am

what a bastard of a day

I not long got back from the hospital wher my 9yo daughter has just had surgery on here left thigh to put 4 pins into a break that she sustained in the schoolyard while playing on the gym/monkeybar equipment. Her thighbone has broken like a peice of timber and splintered away from one side to the other so rather than being a clean thru break its quite nasty

after a couple of hours in surgery things were a little better than they had seemed the Doctor was unsure of how he was going to put her back together but has managed to do it so far with minimal cutting into her leg so hopefully no nasty scars....will know more in a week or so she may have to undergo surgery again to do some more work to it

anyways thats been my day and thankfully Ive been a member of the ambulance for pretty much all of my adult life and today it payed off

we got the call from school at around 2-30 that our daughter, Ruby had an accident in the playground and refused to get up from where she was also the fact that she said she couldnt move her leg and it really hurt...no tears yet and surprisingly only a few have come out over the whole ordeal..

so off to school we go we get there and after a quick inspection and a talk with her its time to get serious and call the ambo's they arrived pretty quickly, about 5-8 mins and proceeded to do an inspection of the situation to which they confirmed our possible fear of a break but still not 100% so after some very careful manouvering we get her out of the playground equipment and onto their trolley and into the ambo without to much fuss and still no tears

a quick trip into the hospital, Hampton Park to Dandenong, and into casualty we go while waiting and talking to the guys that trip alone is worth a couple of grand plus waiting time at the hospital. The 2 guys did a great job at looking after Ruby and the rest of us, my wife Ronnie and our son Connor,I cant say enough about these guys the were fantastic

Even tho this is going to sound like something your folks would say , if you dont have Ambulance membership it is very worthwhile you never know when your going to need it. And even if you never use it, it helps to keep these guys in a job with the latest gear to help those that need it

Over the last few months Ive been meeting more and more emergency workers and I think they need all the help they can get for the things they have to deal with

Thanks for listening...

Kev

Sorry to hear that digger, I hope she recovers well! Seems like Ambo cover is a good idea.

Glad to hear she's okay Kev! You're right about ambulance cover, we've had many trips with my eldest son, and without it we'd be broke. And yes, every emergency worker we've come across has been an absolute champ.

Wow! Now THAT's an injury!

Hopefully she makes a quick recovery Kev, at least she wasn't in too much pain.

Ambo insurance, like any other insurance I guess, is invaluable, you'll never know when/if you need it. I can't remember how much mine costs, but mum & dad cover it each year for me as a birthday present. Sounds kind of weird, but it beats getting some weird CD I'll never listen to, or a really bad t-shirt that's like a moderate knockoff of a popular quote. The worst one to date has been: "BEER... helping men dance since 1962!" Oh yes! I'm SO wearing that to the local pub! What's that? I'm being set upon by a bunch of guys who think I'm wearing a homo shirt? Hmm, it's a good thing I've got ambo insurance since I'm about to be hospitalised...

Hopefully your hip pocket isn't ravaged too much Kev ;)

All the best

sorry to here that kev. i hope your daughter has a speedy recovery and he has the love and support of her family and friends which will help her along more. good luck to you all and keep us updated.

i do have ambo cover and i have actually been in a few of them too and they are expensive if you arent covered. it says on a add on tv thats it a bit over a gran just to get in the ambo. so the $60 a year is well worth it

Just got off the phone to Ronnie and Ruby they are both doing well, Ruby especially, the surgeon came back in this morning and is very proud of his work, they are taking more X-rays today to see how it all went with the hope she may be home this afternoon/evening but wont be going far for 8-10 weeks

the main reason it has been such a big drama is that the break is about 3-4 inches from where the bone connects to the hip
add that to the fact she is a tiny little girl as in skinny as, she eats like a horse but just keeps on growing up instead of out

thanks for all the kind words and wishes its greatly appreciated, Ruby is definetly a trooper all the nurses and the Doc's think shes the toughest person they have seen especially since last week they had a man in his late 20's very athletic do similar and nearly screamed the place down and she has hardly let out more than a wimper and a few tears

I'll update again when I know more and yet again thanks guys/gals

Ouch, that's a pretty horrible spot for a break, what a tough little youngin'! Hope she gets better soon Kev :)

I've had ambulance cover ever since my younger brother and I raced motorcross. Being in a remote area, a bad fall could easily mean a helicopter ride and that shit ain't cheap at all. Luckily we've never had to use the chopper, but the little brother's been in the back of other ambo's probably about 10-15 times now. His longest trip was about 450km's all the way to melbourne (broken neck), and I'm sure that would have been expensive if we weren't members.

Good to hear she is on the road to recovery.

Ambo membership FTW. Never needed to use it, but it is good to know it is there if ever needed.

We had ambulance cover also at one stage, but apparently if you are entitled to and have a health care card/pension card you're covered anyway. Those emergency workers do deal with some terrible stuff out there - I can't imagine myself in a job like that.

It's one of those jobs where you don't wanna be asked "how was work/what did you do today".

All the best for her recovery, it's good to hear she's a fighter.

Not long been home again, with wife and daughter in tow they took some more x-rays this arvo and are pleased with the way it all looks, the physio came and saw us and was very happy to see Ruby very detirmined to get out of bed and walking with crutches so quickly

all day at the hospital we have had people from other wards coming in to see the brave little girl with the broken leg, people's genorosity is amazing we have got more flowers than a nursery, teddy bears that would put a toy store to shame and more books, kids magazines than most newsagents and most were given to us by people we had never met before

All I can say it this whole ordeal has restored some faith in todays society

Most importantly we have our little girl home and safe were she wants to be

Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and wishes hopefully all goes well with the recovery and in around 6-7 weeks the pins they have put in her fimur can be removed with little fuss for her

Thanks again for helping me keep some sanity

Kev
