How Much Torque/power can your T5 hold?

Postby ELXR6turbo » June 11th, 2008, 6:48 pm

How many people have demolished a T5, and at what sort of power level. Im about to bolt mine up soon, probably starting at about 200kwrw through an exedy HDCB clutch. Fingers crossed.

i have been trashing the shit out of my car for 6months and the gearbox has been ok, if u boost it up too much my clutch starts to slip (anything over 13psi)

I'd say at 200rwkw t5's are ok.

It also depends on what type of forced induction.A turbo will kill it a hell of lot quicker than a blower.I've had 240rwkw and about 550nm of torque and she still seems fine.If you had that with a turbo'd car, it'd probably already be dead.  But thats the torque so low down in the rev range, rather than a lot of the power up top.

Mines been going for a few years and a few different owners with 200 odd rwkw, and it seems fine. Running stockies, and a standard clutch would be helping it a fair bit though.

SLOWEA ran 340rwkw through his T5 box for a while. It had a heck of a whine, but it lasted quite a while from what I remember.

i killed 2 t5's in 2 weeks both had under 120,000 on them before i got them.

they both died just rolling on the power in 3rd, would of had 290-300rwkw at that stage.

Yeah you have be carefull with 3rd gear in a stock T5.

It all comes down to the individual gearbox and how you treat it i the end. Plenty of people have put loads of power through T5's and they survived, others have broken them like Arnie breaking a pencil in 'Kindergarten Cop'.
I have an EA T5 in my garage that I will never sell, it's invincible! If the one that's in my car now gives up the one on the garage floor will go straight back in and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the end of my gearbox trouble. It's taken everything I've had to throw at it N/A and Turbo and I'm talking about 3500rpm clutch dumps in 3rd gear to get the thing sideways at Queensland Raceway, it's tough!

I've killed a couple of them, talking to Paul @ JPC, consensus is they last about 10 seconds with decent power

If you are gentle with feeding the power on, they should last a while. But what fun is that?

Pretty sure that gearbox gave birth after/during a few of those runs.

And if the gearbox was anything like the motor, probably more to it than meets the eye.

I drove about 3000km with prob around ~190 @ wheels with no trouble or noises.

I'm a soft kunt though.

I went for a ride with STOKEB and Simon and sht a few times back in the day. Those fukkers know how to drive. I could never match the punishment they subjected to their boxes.

Hus was so para about his box he would only take 1 passenger for a frash at a time. Didn't want to put excess load on the box lol.

It's funny all the people that say the EA T5s are fragile, and EBII onwards T5 are a lot tougher. This thread makes it sound like the EA T5 isn't that bad after all. I'd still be wary of feeding a lot of power through it, but they don't seem any worse than the later ones.

Re: How Much Torque/power can your T5 hold?

Postby ELXR6turbo » June 12th, 2008, 10:33 pm

To tell the truth, I was planning to wind on a few more pound of boost later. The Engine will make 300-350rwkw quite comfortably. I will be starting @around8-10psi then moving on to 13-15psi.

I have ripped 1 skid in 4 years of driving, ripped a belt, and bent a steering pump pulley doing so. I havent layed a patch since, so I am not hard on the driveline.

Initially I had a $9k budget for my driveline(t56 hydraulic setup, twin 10.5" plates 2-piece tailshaft, yada yada yada.. (from Mal wood auto)

I have since considered all opinions (engine builder, head shop, other revheads)and decided against.

What most of you guys have been saying is that it comes down to the individual gearbox, and how much power you pump through it in 2nd, and 3rd right?

Any feedback is helpful(99% anyway).

Thanks, Matt.

Yeah, I heard they didnt fit as well as the T56 though(more mods).
Apparently they sit forward a lot further than the t5 about 3 inch or so. Where as the T56 sits back an inch. Then you dont need a 3" offset in your gearstick(malwood info).

Mind you they are still about $6k to bolt in.

The TKO requires a different bellhousing .. Mine is M Wood TKO conversion..
The gear lever is 40mm further foward..No big deal..
Strength of a T5 http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/products/T-5.asp
The check the TKO's torque capacity!! HUGE !!
Btw my T5 lasted two years till I sold it ..It handled 270 rwkw..
Looked after it though, no hard accellerating over pumps or joins in road..

How many people are running short shifters with adjustable gear stops? Shifting too far kills gearboxes too.

If you've got the cash the TKO is a better box than a T56.
But a lot of people like the T56 for the extra ratio, so you can run short diff ratio's, and still have a good cruising rpm.

I just had a quick re-read of the thread. Looks like they're still finalising suppliers and price, but sounds like a few hundred under 2.5k US (including freight) for a TKO600 with shifter.

I'll read it properly later, and I'll paste in all relevant detail.

I'm bored so I read through that thread, these are pretty much the only two useful posts price wise lol. They're still deciding where they want to get the boxes from, the first quote is for just the box and shifter + postage (from America) and the second quote is for a bloke with a XH XR8 from mal wood.

peachey80 wrote:That shifter looks nice TrueBlue ! I can see line locker would be handy at times :mrsparkle

Ok, I got a bit more info on transport.
Found a source in California that can do a TKO600 for $1890 US with shifter. The bonus with it being in Cali, is that is where everything will be shipped from, so freight from the parts shop to depot will be very little. For those who are interested I can send you PM with details of supplier, I don't have it on hand nopw, left it at work.
Ok, with the freight. They are now saying $450 from cali to Melbourne, all customs and clearances included. BUT !, does not include insurance and GST. Not sure if you can get away with GST or not if it is classed as a "gift" if there happens to be a birthday card in with the associated paperwork.... ?
Not sure about you guys, but I am wanting to have insurance ! So will research up on that. Oh, the $450 is for a full pallet to, not per box....
We can have parts shipped from everywhere and they can consolodate everything onto one pallet and send it al together.

So, would still like to get together the FULL cost of everything before we make any decisions.... ie local or US.... and weight it all up.

Cheers.

Shayne

With this kit you can reuse the clutch fork, clutch cable, tailshaft etc and the gearstick will be set up to go through the same hole in the floor and console and furthermore the clutch will hold 600HP with ease.
This will leave you with a complete V8 T5 kit that you should be able to sell on the open market for $2000 leaving you with a very cost effective upgrade to your car. Regards Mal

Someone on here has a BA/BF Xr6 T56 or two for sale for under 2k I believe, and I could sell you guys all the crap required to bolt in a t56 for 1500-2k as well (depending one postage and what you wanted). You'd still have to get a clutch after that, but how much you spend on that is up to you.

I had a stock N/A BF XR6 clutch in my car for freaking ages, I'd estimate they are good for maybe 230rwkw or so in a boxcar - mine slipped on decent boost in third with 370rwhp but was good in first and second.

I murdered third in a T5 with about 270rwhp, at the actual time it broke it was only maybe a 60 or 70% 2-3 shift, I wasn't even going hard. The box I put in after that lasted through powercruise, (and copped it a fair bit) but by the end of that was noisy in every gear except 4th and all the synchros were pretty shagged. If you have nice short diff gears and/or slippery tyres under the bum they will last a little longer.

I've been raping the T56 since august last year with 370 and then almost 400rwhp and it's still sucking it up like a two dollar hooker. I luff it :)

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

Yeah, but if you can get a whole TKO600 kit from Mal Wood, for 6k.
There's no way in hell i'd spend 2k on a 2nd hand T56, 2k for the install parts, + clutch, flywheel, etc.

That pretty well makes it the same price as the TKO600.
Easy choice... Mal wood kit FTW.

yeah tahts 5L but
4L id go t56 cause its relatively easy...

Wonder what Mal Wood would want for a 4L tko kit, i dont reckon it would be as cheap as a 5L kit.
