FG XR6T - Close-up pics

BI6TIM and I went out and had a close look at an FG XR6T yesterday, I thought I would take some pics of the areas of interest for me. I thought I would share them with you guys... incase you haven't had the chance for a close look yourself.

I was glad to see the cooler piping fixed from BA/BF, it now goes from the turbo side through the intercooler and to the throttle body on the passenger side. Instead of doubling back all over the place. BI6TIM questioned why they didn't just swap the battery and the airbox, and rightly so... it would be much better. It was nice to spot sequential injection too. The gearbox is smooth as silk and the clutch is effortless. I want that clutch feel in my AIT!

Also what is that funnel shaped bit right on the inlet of the turbo? I thought it might be a pod filter or something, but surely there is a filter in the airbox on the passenger side. I don't know!

But the biggest observation was the drivers seatingposition. It seems too high and the steering wheel won't go as high as I would like. I had to move the seat further back than I like just so that I didn't feel cramped and then I didn't feel right on the pedals. BI6TIM said the same thing so it's not just me, he also said that the standard XR6 seemed better in this respect. It's strange and a bit disappointing.

Anyway here are the pics, everything is pretty explanatory just click on the images for a larger version, then click again for the full res version.

PS: I love the traction control button AKA "skid button". There's a shot of it halfway through these images.

God i wish the dealerships would clean off the splashed coolant over the cooler pipes and wherever else it covers. It just looks second rate. Even in Fords promo DVD's of the FG and the press cars there was shit everywhere.

i sure do wish they change the wheels when they release a mk2 or something, those focus wheels are terrible. Everything else is nice though, cd/climate control looks confusing but.

Yeah those wheels FTL.
The inlet manifold looks odd too. It looks very small

I thought they were swapping to a plastic inlet manifold? it looks like its still metal to me.

Gas and turbo vehicles are retaining the alloy... Gas for obvious reasons!

Its really suprising the power/torque/performance they are getting from such intake manifold, just goes to show 'bigger is not always better'. And the 'phoons performance, wow! Has the media released some quarter mile and 0-100 times yet?

There has been heaps of complaints about the steering wheel position, every single review I've read, and anyone who knows a bit about cars thats driven one have all said the same thing. It's fvcking shit! It's one of the biggest complaints of the car, WTF were Ford thinking? Did they not actually let someone sit in a prototype FG? Did they design the whole lot on a PC?

It would cost too much to move the battery just for the turbo models. Check the difference in available space on each side, the battery has a fusebox and header tank hard up against it, they'd have to be moved as well etc etc.

I've got a feeling that funnel on the end of the turbo has something to do with the launch control.

[edit] A couple more pics just loaded. WTF is with the bonnet lining?! I know Ford are trying to save money, but come on, even XD's had a hoodlining that covered under the whole bonnet.

It's only the N/A 6's that have the plastic manifold.

so you didnt use the launch control??
what that is, you have the car in 1st clutch in foot flat to the floor and dump the clutch, the car sits at about 3500rpm

Uhmm.... no. G6ET has the same intake.

My guess is:
A) it is there for a reason, such as reducing intake noise or helping airflow, or...
B) it is there for no reason, it was possibly an existing part somewhere and ford recycled it

Test Drive, the shit car show on channel 9, claims it beat some VE Clubby 6.4 litre monster, and the new turbo M3 around their track.

Maybe that intake thing is an electric supercharger... :?

To be serious though it's probably just to increase the volume, but they made it that shape so that it looks decent.

it is possible that it increases air flow but it wasnt discovered until after the unvailing.

lets keep in mind there is a 3 page booklet of faults on the FG at this time

There's a guy on AFF who posted pics of his G6ET, definitely has that intake.

It's possible they didn't have all the final production parts available at the unveiling. Ford probably only initially made enough parts for the test cars, but didn't ramp up full production until *just* before the cars were due to roll off the line for the public (which has been delayed a few times). The intake on the car at the unveiling could have been a spare left over from testing or something :P

I picked up MOTOR or some other car mag the other day that had a shootout between the new F6 and some HSV equivalent.

Long story short they reckoned the F6 was better overall. One thing I noticed in the specs was that they only quote a 13.9 quarter mile?

So is the computer shutting the fun down? 310kw should be faster than that.

What are you reading? The F6 did 13.4 @ 111mph with a Performance box in Motor, with a manual too. The 80-120kmh time of 2.8s is supercar territory.

With a ZF, 12's would be a snatch at the strip.

I did a bit of a google, and it seems it was Motor mag, and it was a wet track

I've got the July issue here (first Motor F6 drive) with the GT v F6 v LS3 R8, no mention of a wet test. Definitely 13.4 @ 111 for the F6. GT did a 13.8 @ 108, and the HSV did a 13.5 @ 109.

[edit] There are a couple pics of the cars driving on a damp road, maybe the fanboys needed to make an excuse for the F6 not running a C63 Black or M5 beating time.

pretty sure the unveiling of the FG's were just rolling shells with a BF motor in em

13.1s I read somewhere when against the HSV, which it beat by a car length... It'd be good if I could remember where I read that...

They obviously wern't ripped straight from a BF, they had FG intakes etc etc.

I hate myself for saying this but if I had the choice between a VE and an FG I would take a VE no questions asked.

I have a funny feeling the FG will be another flop and join the type of sales that we saw in the AU days. But thats just personal opinion you guys might see differently and the general public out there.

Just to plastic looking for me!!

What about the VE do you find so much more appealing than the FG? They're more similar than different, and the FG range has the bonus of the 4L turbo :D

I heard roumors that the G6E model was having problems with the turbo spooling too early....
Anyone else heard of this b4?? Also heard of overheating issues, but I was under the impression they are running the same engine as the BF's..
Correct me if im wrong.
