Hi all,
just got offered an AU3 engine by a guy at work today.
Its free, from an XR. only problem is that it will need a bottom end rebuild. how much would i be up for if i took the engine and went this way? are the series 3 engines same as 1 + 2 (i assume so)? how much fkn around would i be lookin at for a conversion?

well being a series 3 is that it will have VCT (Variable Cam timing) which i have heard is an absolute bitch to wire up into an e series.

engine still goes well anyway, and makes a surprising amount of power IMO for a dead stocker.

VCT was optional, AU1 XR6s could be had with VCT.

As for differences, headgasket changed I think between AU1 (e-series style), & the AU2-3 engines (MLS). Dunno about anything else

Free engine, but fvcked engine... perfect opportunity to learn how to rebuild motor if you've got the time & the tools.

Just take it and part it out. The head alone should fetch $300 on e-gay since theres not alot of the VCT heads going around for parts.

If you want to rebuild the engine..... buy/find/borrow/steal a tension wrench (get one in metric) and a good guide for a rebuild (maybe look around on fordmods?).

I'd grab it...

Looking through the reciepts from my car(Which i just brought) a full rebuild cost the last guy 1200. Thats rings, bearings, gaskets, etc etc

And it would be heaps cheaper doing it yourself.

off topic, but didnt wanna start new thread for it. whats this 'real' and 'fake' woodgrain stuff??
just put in EL Ghia trims with woodgrain on em, its a piece of plastic. so thats real or fake? WTF is the diff?

EF has real wood on the door trims, EL has wood-look plastic.

it'd all fit just as well yeah?
thats somethin for the future....another thing to add to the list even tho i got my Ghia trims....
but for $30, cant complain.

They look the same. If youve got EL already, no need to swap just to get real wood.

On the topic of the motor, if its not VCT, grab it! Sell the head/cam/etc.

na, its VCT. the dude made a point of sayin that. sif it helped him now in hindsight. lol
dad wont be happy with an engine lying round the house, so if any of u kents are wantin an AU3 engine with VCT - pulled from an XR6, let me know. i'll try get a hold of that guy again for yas, see how we go.

It will work in the car, just not the VCT part I dont think. Although I think someone on FM has got theres going?
