Hybrid34's Boot Install (Fairlane)

PostPosted: July 8th, 2008, 2:02 pm

Thought I'd put up a build thread of my Boot install, its been an on going saga not having the time (or brains) to do it, but finally have got some motive now that I have some time off..
1996 Ford Fairlane Mock FBT
Alpine Type S Subwoofers 2x 300Watt RMS 15"
Alpine Amp V12 Monoblock
Alpine AmpV 12 4 Channel
Pioneer Tv Tuner
Pioneer Audio/Video Processor
Pioneer Cd Stacker
Pioneer DVD Stacker
Pioneer 7" Flip out Dvd Screen
Pioneer 6" + Splits at the front (250Watt)
Pioneer 6" + Splits at the Rear (250Watt)

Materials Used:
-12mm MDF for amp side walls and false floor
-16mm MDF for sub box
-25mm, 32mm, 38mm Particle Board Coutnersunk Screws
-2.5M of Velcro
-Selly's Adhesive glue
-PVC Glue
-White Vinyl
-Charcol Grey Carpet
(^all from Bunnings)
-2 Black Iight Neon 12" (Repco)
-2 Computer Fans (Internet)
-Wires and Switches for lights (Repco)

Still have to buy
12mm for the Amp cutouts and rear of sub box Toughened Glass (Ready Glass)

Jigsaw
Powersaw
Screw Driver
Drill
Scissors
Are all your best friend!

Step 1. As my sound system was previously sitting in the boot nailed to some wood with wires hanging all over the place, I started to plan out drawings on where the equipment should be mounted, after that taking out the equipment and rewiring wires to specific areas of the boot.
Image
Image
Step2. Cutting out cardboard templates is a MUST when it comes to measurements and accuracy as a guide, this is basically what I want it to look like.
Image
Step3. Starting off with the foundation I measured up the false floor, cutting it to size and shape. Also having a trap door to access the Tyre. Then cutting out the carpet to fit the false floor (using Adhesive and Staple Gun to do so).

Step4. AFter the completion of the false floor, it was time to start on the Amp pits (mounts), first on the RHS for the Mono block. I've decided to go along with having them up on the sides of the boot, then enclosed into a box (with a glass window). Also there are a fan in each amp board to cool the amp (as its enclosed), as well as BLUE and Black light LEDS and Neons (respectivly).
There are 6 Pieces of separate wood in total for this process, starting off with;
-The mount for the amp to be bolted on,
-The top Lid to cover the amp (and hinge when boot is closed)
-The Side wall (with the glass cover as a window)
-Two pieces of 12mm MDF strips to be bolted down to the false floor and underneath the Amp LID with velcro stuck to them (to hold the amp cover rather than bolting it in for each access)
- 1 piece of wood screwed to the underneath of the amp lid and amp mount to stablise the top of the boot lid to the car.
- Additional pieces of wood were used as a filler to bolt the amp mount to the side of the car (using the second skin metal of the car)
Image
Image
Image

Step5. Once all the wood for the amp pits was cut out, I then routed a 3 holes into the amp mount area where 1 fan would be screwed in, along with holes for access of wires. Then all was pieces of wood was carpeted + vinyl.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Step6. I found the black lights are NOT bright enough, only emit a small amount of light, so i have used them as well as a conjunction of BLUE LEDS to give a better effect, these where mounted on the sides and underneath the amp pit.

This is all...for now.

Yeah good inspiration keeps ya outta trouble,
-$80 For the Wood
-$20 Screws
-$50 Adhesive
-$30 Carpet
-$20 Vinyl
-Toughend Glass (looking aroudn $150 - $200)
-$70 Neons + LEDs
-$20 PVC glue
-$20 Velcro

+$30 for other bits n pieces, wires, fuses, and so forth

so your looking aroud $500 all up, but these prices are all a rough estimate,....then you'll have to go out n buy some tools (theres always something you don't have:P, unless your a chippy :) )

Bigger?!?! These are 12cm pretty big for normal 12v fans (used for computers), and these are dead silent, can't hear the motor at all. I'd recommened them for anyone who wants to push a bit of airflow.

Cheers mate, heard ur were over at kevs today?,
I hope to get it finsihed within 2 weeks, its just getting the glass cut up for size thats gonna be the biggest time waster.

Those are most of hte pics, i hav ea few more, kind of the same, I've just installed the lights on the RHS amp panel, looks insane (very bright), will post up tomorrow..
Not only do i have access to the spare wheel, but i can take out the amp walls (as they are velcroed on) if i need to access the amp etc.
If theres anything you'd like to know i'll try help you as to I have done,

Update Picture:
Finally got the lights in, I've decided to scrap blue neons as they won't emit enough light + their really fragile. As well as not having 5mm LED Lights as they still won't be bright enough, only have a 50Degree spread angle,
So I've gone with the Strip LED 120 Degree angle, these are mean little things as they are VERY VERY bright, have a huge angle, can be cut up to any size and very flexible, BUT you pay for them big time.
This is the RHS Amp corner complete (apart from Sanding the frame, glassing it and carpeting it, which will be done when I order the glass).
The lights consist of
-3 LEDS on the LHS of the amp
-6 LEDS on the top of the Amp
-3 LEDS behind the fan

Looks vah nice mate! The fans are a great idea, one of the main reasons for electronics like that shitting them selfs is because all the heat can't be dissipated quick enough!

Quick question, why are you using glass, what about polycarb or perspex? :)

Re: Hybrid34's Boot Install (Fairlane)

PostPosted: July 12th, 2008, 5:05 pm
by Robertsbrock
Yeah wouldnt perspex cost stuff all compared to glass ??

Re: Hybrid34's Boot Install (Fairlane)

PostPosted: July 12th, 2008, 7:36 pm
by Hybrid34
I'd never use perspex, I've heard from alot of guys, they scratch really easy, and after some time get that stained snowy look, as well as their not that strong and with heavy bass you MIGHT get vibration noise as they flex.
yeah their alot cheaper than glass, but i look at it this way, its a once off thing, thick toughend glass is deff the way to go :)

Yeah I like the idea of the Grey sprayed fan...might do that acutally (for finishing touches)

cheers

Update:
Started to do the amp mount today on the RHS, first of all leveled up and evened out the side walls for the dvdstackers.
Then Measured where to put the Amp, and its angle, cut out a mount, then some blocks to hold it in place (along with a support beam at the back.
Drilled out some holes for the cables to go through and vinyl ed it out in white
