www.news.com.au wrote:Most Petrol Hungry cars NamedTHE Holden Commodore has been outed as the most petrol-hungry of Australia's big-selling cars, as motorists mull over how to combat high fuel prices.
The Federal Government has released a list of which cars use the most petrol to inform consumers - and it's bad news for Commodore and Falcon owners.
Of the most popular cars, the Commodore was top of the list, costing $2430 in petrol a year and releasing 3.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Next in line came the Ford Falcon, costing $2272 and releasing 3.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The Mazda 3 came third, costing $1845 in petrol, while the ever-popular Toyota Corolla came next with a $1672 petrol price tag.
The cheapest fuel bill went to the Toyota Yaris, costing $1350 a year.
The Government has also rated five-star and hybrid cars.
The cheapest opf these to run is the Toyota Prius hybrid, which costs $990 in fuel each year and releases 1.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The lists can be found in the government's Green Vehicle Guide at
http://www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au"More than ever, it's important to consider not only the car's ticket price but also its ongoing running and environmental costs," Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said.
Trading in a 6-cylinder car for a mid-size 4-cylinder model could cut petrol bills - and carbon emissions - by up to a third, Mr Albanese said.

I'd like to thank everyone who voted Labour. Because we really needed the government to be spending their time on crap like this.
That website doesn't even account for purchase price. You can buy a Falcon for and put fuel in it for about 15 years for the purchase price of a Prius. Plus the Prius needs the batteries replaced every 10 years at around $15k. Also no mention of service costs, running costs (VE Omega tyres are nearly 3x the price of FG XT tyres for example), depreciation, and how much energy is actually used to build a new car.
No mention of LPG or diesel, which I think the Govt. isn't even acknowledging the existance of, except for an inflated tax grabber.
And on top of it all, like Frost pointed out, the Govt. is trying to drive people away from Australian built cars, whether they mean to or not.

Good ol' Mcfucktard Rudd the Dudd.
I really hate that bastard for what he has done to the big car industry in Australia, pushing all the eco-friendly bullshit down peoples throats when Australia only emmits like 2% of the worlds total.
And to reduce that 2% to 1% he is going to **** alot of things up. I'll tell you what will happen by 2020 if the Dudd is still around, the Australian car industry will cease to exist and all new cars will be imports from Asia, all performance cars/ cars with mods/ any capacity engine bigger than a 2.0 I4 will be taxed so heavily that anyone earning less than 500k won't be able to run/buy them and "working families" will have suffered through the arse-rape green taxes Rudd forcefully empossed on them to reduce the irrevalant carbon immisions of Australia.
I hate fuckin' eco hippies.

Not to mention all the recycling that goes on with Aussie cars. You don't see yards with 626 or Sirion wrecks commonly sitting around.

Kevin Rudd does seriously look like a south park character. He came to my school earlier this year, and well, he's a wanker, the government does nothing to help the general public, all they want is votes, and with all the talk of green house gasses and other crap, this appears to be the way to do it, by farking us all over. Bring back Bob Hawke ( Guinness World Record holder of drinking a yard glass the fastest, best PM EVER)

Howard was a antiquated but at least he saw the significance of the Australian automotive industry and didn't pressure it into making gun-hoe economically unsustainable changes. Think of it this way, we might of seen a modern GT-HO if it wasn't for this drama queen.

I'd rather pay the extra $19 a week in fuel so I don't have to tell people I drive a yaris :S but by the same token, all the homos that "only want a car to get from A to B" should be forced to buy a crappy econobox so they save some fuel for me to use
Aaron - have you got any more info on the comparative running costs of VE and FG? It would be interesting reading.

Total energy spent to produce a new car is a figure that never gets any media attention.
If people just kept driving/repairing whatever car they have then surely that is far better for the environment than shipping scrap steel to china + heaps of electricity + whatever else to produce a new Hyundai.

All these battery cars are worse for the enviroment than everyone thinks.
-Power that needs to generated to power them.
-production of the car + batteries which need to be changed every 5 years
-Disposal of the car + batteries.
There was a study done 12 months ago and the most effect car from production to running of the car to disposal is the Jeep Wrangler. Toyota Prius was 80 something.

^^^ yep, anyone who buys a new car (be it fuel efficient or hybrid or whatever) and thinks they're doing the environment a favour? They're kidding themselves.
This petrolcentric view is dangerous. Yes, buying a new large car when it's not needed in today's world isn't really a good idea. For example fleets where the cars almost always have a sole occupant and never haul stuff around. These buyers can opt for smaller cars and save themselves on initial capital, running costs, and resale losses. But telling people that buying a new hybrid is better for the environment than buying a 2nd-hand large (or otherwise) car? Ludicrous.
