Flicking Speedo's Back...??

Since Ive put an AU motor in the EF ....the speedo doesnt give a correct reading. New engine done 78,000km's, speedo says 285,000km's. My question is, can I wind it back legally just so that I can keep track of how many K's this AU motor has done?
Im not interested in selling the car at all so thats not why I want the speedo wound back.
Mate of mine rekons its too risky to do, and ill be in the shit if someone questions it.
My answer to that is, I just brought a cluster with 78,000k's on it.......wouldnt that cover my ass?
But like I said, I dont want it wound back for selling the car at a better price, its just so I know what the engine has done.
Any1 know the rules or the shit I could get into from doing so????

How many K's has your car done?

The "shell" has done over 200,000. Engine 78,000. Gearbox 105,000.

I'm not gonna tell you how to do it but I'll just say watch out an be neat about it- from what I can remember looking at the EA Spack cluster i have there is only paper stickers sealing it. Be carefull with the clear plastics aswell when taking it apart because they crack pretty easily.

yeah but u got to take into account, the chassis, bolts and whatnot, that all is major factors in a cars KM, say if you done that and wound it back to whatever u wanted to, the next person who buys it will think sweet it has low kays but once they put it up on a hoist and look at the structual shit they will think ****

It's in the EPROM(?) memory I think, if you swap clusters, your "78,000km" cluster will read 285,000 ;)

The memory is stored on the speedo, I remember reading somewhere you can change the part by de-soldering it and soldering it onto the speedo you want to use, but I can't remember what it was or where I read it :P

The car is a 285,000 car though, doesn't matter what the motor/gearbox has done, you could get into some trouble if you get caught.

Im not understanding how a cluster would know how many K's the car has done.??
Thats the other thing too, IF....I ever sold the car I would tell that person the K's are for the motor, not the chasis.
But I have no intrest in sellin it at all.

If your not going to sell the car just document what km's you put the engine in and then track it that way. Its dodgey as hell when people wind the km's back as you can tell straight away from driving a car if its done 100,000 or 300,000 like an ed 5lt fairmont i test drove the other day which i 'was' going to buy.

Hrmm sounds like ill just have to write down the K's on the cluster compared to the actual K's on the motor.
Cant get in the shit that way. :)

lol suuuuuure you'll 'fess up...

Anyway, as Gilly said, the odo reading is stored in memory. The odo display in an EF is exactly that, just a display. If you plugged your "285,000km" dash into the car the "78,000km" dash came out of, surprise surprise, it'll read "78,000kms".

Oh, one more thing: Let's say there's a hypothetical ex taxi with 800,000kms on it & the motor lets go. It's replaced with a, 80,000km motor. Is it all of a sudden an 80,000km car?

may be your speedo gear, i need 2 get one to compensate for my new diff, ask Schmee he will be able 2 help ya out.

I think you may have missunderstood the whole topic. K'ms the car has DONE. Not the SPEED in Km/h. :)

Well, technically, that WILL have an impact on your odo :P

My odo has about 10,000kms extra on it due to the speedo being 25% out. The car still feels like it's done 500,000 though

Yeah get one that runs in reverse so you can wind back the odometer.

Or do the Ferris Bueller thing and run it in reverse on chassis stands for a while.

Mate you were told how it works, why argue.

EA-ED are completely different to EF/ELs.

EPROM stores the km. its a small ass chip on the back of the board. You need to solder it to change it. problem is, what you need to solder is far too tiny and close to the board for any normal soldering iron.
Theres no point though, may as well change the cluster to a lower km one.
But then again - why bother.

You could get an aftermarket universal speedo and put it in the engine bay or cab somwhere?

Just a thought. . .

May as well simply write down the kms in the glovebox book. cheaper. simpler. easy.

You, you said you dont understand how the cluster holds the km. it does. in a chip.

commando: if the cluster is swapped it will read what the cluster has done, not the car. The memory is held in the little chip thats attached to the cluster ;)

Yeh, EPROM chip is on the back of the circuit board. ECU is not related to the EPROM in any way.

theres a device that can change it but you would not be able to set it back legally, cuz the KM's also compensate for the other parts of the car.

My bad! Thanks for pointing it out. I found this on fordmods just before:

The Odometer Readings can be swapped, changed or kept. The Odometer Reading is held within the Instrument Cluster, not within the EEC-V Engine Management, nor does the Instrument Cluster have a Backup Memory, or a Tamper-proof mechanism to deter Odometer Fraud !

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/Changing ... s-d14.html

Have a read through that link t1mmy & you'll find out more about it. I did :)
