i did a search but still have a few questions, i hav a el 4l and want it to shift abit firmer / quicker but dont want to have to get the box rebuilt. Is an electronic shift kit just a matter of changing the solenoid to a different one?
Who has one in their car, does it damage the auto?

I have one in my el, its only two resistors and a switch. cost $6 from jaycar and bout half hour to make and install. hasnt damaged anything yet,

The typical "electronic shift kit" involves a couple of resistors which alter the readings to/from the S5 solenoid, thus ramping up the pressure in the lines & firming up the shifts. There's a lot of stories going around about electronic shift kits blowing up gearboxes & causing global warming, etc, but I've had one on two of my autos now. The first one I fitted up when the box was getting on (280,000kms maybe?), and it lasted until 350,000kms, when the box died from unrelated causes. The same shift kit is on my current box (80,000kms old, probably has an extra 10,000 on it now), no signs of deterioration at all.

In a high-powered vehicle I'd say it would help due to less heat buildup (slower gearchanges on non-shiftkitted boxes cause more heat buildup), but for a stock-ish Falcon, this won't really do much.

I don't think they hurt the box, good value for <$10 of parts. But a mechanical shift kit (permanent, you can't switch these on/off, and they're much more expensive) is better again.

Out of interest, What is a mechanical shift kit? Are they tighter bands or somthing to do with the clutches ect?

Do you have the problem of it jumping/banging into to gear just as its about to go up in gear when your about to slow? Well mine does and doesn't sound/feel good!

i havent had an electronic one tho so i cant tell the ya the difference.
only downer on mechanical is not being able to turn it off so first to second shift is a bit of a jolt even jus cruising slowly up.
but ya get used to that and wounder whas goin on when it doesnt do it eventually.

Mechanical is usually a valve body/solenoid jobbie, and/or the clutches/bands being beefed up (extras added or better material).

Yeah, mine does that too, if you boot it and then back off *just* before it changes, it'll thump into gear.

i tend to not use mine all the time tho as its stock as. No probs with it yet. That said, i dont do a huge amount of driving, just the short run about, and only use it when booting it, too jerky for me otherwise.

mechanical shift kits are mint, also never had an electronic one so cant say how they go

i find its not to bad with power button off, still shifts hard but not really uncomfy. but when power is on chirps 18" dunlop sport from frist to second and second to thrid, holmsy knows the feeling

a stally really works well with a shift kit aswell.

yeah me mates vs 5 litre ute has a 3000 stall with a stage 2 shift kit and ya can barely feel it, but it still kicks the ass end out
