Well... what i thought to be a good car has turned out not to be so.
my low KM AU (27,000 km's) has a massive amount of rust in it.
********* AU's
so... looks like the EF will get a new motor and gearbox

Wow, I thought it only had 'a little rust'?
Oh well, AU motor in EF it is then. At least it's got very low klms.

Seems like a waste to strip a 27000km AU even if it does have some rust. All AU's do.

27,000kms and heaps of rust? Did u buy it from a stolen and recovered auction or something?
Buy yourself a descent car to begin with John so you don't have to root around so much. I know frankenstein and falcon 6 mean alot to you, but like me old mate Robert (you met up at Winton) you've just got to let it go.

Would love to see some of this rust, got any pics? Very common in AU's for a few specific areas, but how bad are we talking?

I'm guessing the rust is where the engine box metals meet up and/or cross over and overlap, where they have skimped on sealer and there is some metal exposed to the elements sitting hidden under painted areas. These areas also trap moisture and other foreign shiat which accelerates the rust process. All AU to B-Series and some EF and ELs are affected by this. They also tend to rust a fair bit in the boot where the quarter panels meet the boot gutters, and also where the gas struts are mounted to the body.
I've seen some bad shit in 100,000km-ish AU1 Fortes, but they should still get about $5k with that many KM's on the second hand market. Better $$$ than you'll ever get from stripping it.

ok since most of you don't know the full story, i'll outline it.
the AU has rust in about 6 spots along the door sils, enough for me to put a spanner through it.
there is also a couple of holes about the size of 20 cent pieces in one of the chassis rails, along with rust surrounding it.
theres a chunk of metal the side of a tenis ball missing behind one of the front guards
aaaaaaaaaand thats all found with about a 10min look under the car.
still think i should repair it?
AND, the story of how i got the car.
i inherited it from my Pop when he passed away.
the car was barely used, sat on a slope about 5km from Botany Bay (near sydney)
so the salt water would obviously have a big effect on the car.
the car had had previous rust repairs done earlier in its life also.
I'd be prepared to fix a little rust, but theres just too much in it.
and why would i want to buy another car?
i LIKE to mess around with my cars, i drive the EF every day, its cheap to run, relatively quick, plenty of potential and very enjoyable to drive.

as if get rid of the ef, YES john does put alot of time and pride into the car so BACK OFF. why get a decent car when he HAS a DECENT car. get rid of your crappy au and get a decent car to start with????
as john said he inherited tha car and the body of it has alot of rust so why not put a perfectly good motor in the ef huh. better motor better running car, smart thinking by john i would think.
exactly falcn6 has just been reprayed and its looking MINT so why even consider a new car

Was this a response to my post?? Each to their own I suppose and if you use it as a daily hack I can see your reluctanct to pour excessive amounts of money into it. So I retract my judgement.

Canning the mighty T series is sacraligious FORDBABY, they had the greatest factory 302W of their time, best rear suspension out of any falcon to date and mechanically are one of the most COHESSIVE mass produced factory sedans I will ever have the pleasure of driving.

Who gives a shit about the T series? A well maintained MPI EA six with a decent cam and exhaust system would whip it for around the price of the bodykit off a T series. And to break down your arguements:
1. The IRS on the AU model in general made them slow as all fvck due to the added weight.
2. The 302 Windsors HAD to be the best of their time because they were getting a arse raping from Holden's LS-whatever engine and the pissweak 170-185 KWs wasn't enough.
3. Mechanically Cohessive? A matter of opinion.

t2te50, first up let me say I like the T-series. But to me it appears that because you own one, you are looking down your nose at all the e-series owners, and basically rate yourself a step above. I've never met you person, so I don't know what you're really like, so I may be wrong, but on the forums this is the impression I'm getting.
Back on topic, John, shame about the rust in the AU but hopefully you can continue to improve on the EF. Top stuff.

I have brochures for original T-Series sent to me by FTE back in 99 or 2000. These are in mint condition and come with the large fancy envelope provided by Ford marketing.
You can have them for $1000 t2te50.

If you live in the states there is, lucky fkrs could option a V1 equipped 351Windsor in a Saleen mustang. 480hp. This was in the mid 90s too.
And what do we have? some asthmatic wheezers. Good old Ford Australia.

Would still be worth chucking the ef motor into the Au to get more cash out of the thing... or too much effort?
