Usually comes from running old or thick oil in the diff. Do a service.

excessive backlash in the diff. put a thicker oil in it and it will magically fix itself. (eg 75-140)

I know this sounds wrong...BUT, check your rear springs are sitting in their seats properly. My car was makin those clunking noises backing out the driveway also. I stuck my head under the car and sure enough, 1 of the springs wasnt sitting properly in its seat.

If it only does it when you brake....what makes you think its the diff?
I had the same experiance in one of my earlier e-series, IIRC its the calipers trying to self adjust/centre on the discs.
Sounds like your calipers have seized.

do any of you think getting 4'11 gear ratios is too much?
i know it will use more petrol but will the high revving be bad for the car?

4.11's are good fun.
honestly i havent noticed any improvement in economy since i blew my 4.11's and went back to 3.45

from experiences I would say what timmy mentioned about the rear springs not located in there rubbers properly, also what FairmontXR6 said about the rear callipers and also check your tailshaft uni aswell for wear/freeplay

first thing you should do is atleast get under there and hav a look just too see if anything is fuked that you can see by eye..

i just snaped the end of my tail sharft into the back of my gearbox and its not alot of fun trying too get the broken bits out, sometimes you cant and have to get a new gearbox! so it would be a good idea to hav a look up near the uni as xr lightning said...

clunking when braking could also be the rear discs being warped, the calipers move side to side as you brake (excessive line locking causes it) try greasing the caliper sliders, if that fixes it, replace the discs

Definitely check and tighten all the rear suspension bolts, tailshaft bolts and the rear caliper bolts. Also your wheel nuts....

kickdown not responsive at all

its getting to be a real pain now.
would anyone have any ideas? thanks
