hey all,
a mate of mine picked up a r33 gts yesterday for 6k, he dosnt have his license right now so i went down to pick it up with him, on the way back i gave her a bit of a run, now ive driven stock 33's before, and this thing just lacked the balls, turbo seem to be doing shit all, so we got her back poped the hood, took of the heat plate off around the turbo, and i dont know much about turbos mechanically (i just drive the things :D ), but i noticed the the controll arm( dont know what its called) which opens and closes his wastegate was disconected, now why the has the previous owner taken this off, anyway 5mins later we had it back on, started her up and took her for a spin, This turbo was now sucking like crazy, BUT....... i cant put my foot down past quarter throttle if that, if i go any further she starts chucking a fit, now like i said i dont know to much about turbos but to me it feels like the boost has been amped up, and the stock engine, exaust cant deal with it. im not to sure, just want to see what your opinions are, before we start messing with it, any ideas would help???????

Sounds like it may have been disconnected for a reason.

Try SAU (Skylines Australia) http://www.skylinesaustralia.com

Does it have a boost gauge?

Its probably overboosting and going into rich and retard mode to stop engine damage,

last owner probably put an aftermarket boost controller and removed it before sale and never connected it back up, i think once you go past 10 psi those ecu's just dump heaps of fuel or cut out.

Nah they can go up to around 12 or so befor the turbo lets go on a stock ECU. I would look into either fuel system no providing enough fuel or even the coils might need replacing. Id give it a once over new plugs coilpacks filters and an oil change then go from there also hook up a boost gauge see what boost she is running, stock they ran around 6-7psi IIRC What model R33 is it 1, 1.5 or 2?

Noooooo...

Its generally excepted that at around 1bar (14.5psi) on an RB25 the ceramic turbine wheel is spinning at over its rated speed and generally disintegrates.

el_xr6 is onto it, when the ecu senses excessive knock (generally over 10psi on the stock ecu but it could also happen on stock boost with crap fuel or even on 12psi+ with 100+ octane fuel) it richens up considerably and retards timing to prevent knock and hence damage.

hmmm tis odd ive seen a few guys pushing 11 or 12 psi on stock ecu obviously there is fuel upgrades but yeah. At any rate aftermarket ECU's that plug straight in with a base tune arnt exactly that costly think APEXI make a nice unit the uses factory ecu loom Power FC or something when i was looking at R33s a while back

Its basically a rule of thumb, i myself am running 11psi on the stock ecu no issues using 98 octane. It will vary from engine to engine and it depends on modifications too.

PowerFC's are the bomb, i would love one. You can easily push it heaps harder than 10psi with one of them but then the turbo becomes the issue.

boost gauge reads -1 when boost kicks in it reads 0, lol i dont know what this means. like i said i just drive em. where going to hook a boost controller up tomorrow night and have a play with it, if that dosnt work, we'll start looking deeper

At first I thought your mate bought a GTS (non-turbo) and didn't know

That's cheap for a R33 GTS-T. I remember getting insurance quotes for one when I was 18/19 (when they weren't as common as arseholes) and it was $5.5k for full comp!

I can't help with the lack of power but I was wondering; did your mate test drive it before buying it? Can you drive a GTS-T on your Ps?

Let us know what it is when you find out.

The diaphragm in the wastegate is probably cactus, so the wastegate never opens (when it's all connected). This would easily push the car into an overboost condition. The previous wanker (not owner, wanker, people who sell dodgy cars claiming they are OK should be killed all the way to death) probably figured this out and disconnected the rod, allowing the wastegate flap to swing in the breeze and preventing the turbo from making any boost at all.

Connecting it up means that the rod would be holding the gate shut, causing problems.
