Vehicle Testing Grounds Anglesea

Postby Barnsy » November 6th, 2008, 7:50 pm

I was playing around with Google maps and found a vehicle testing grounds, just outside Anglesea. :o
Has anyone heard of it? I have heard of one in Lara. Or the history of it....or better still I wonder if its open to the public.
Next weekend I will go for a drive and check it out.

It might be the PBR testing facility, they have one in Anglesea. I have never been there, but we always use their "Cooling Circuit" to test our race cars from uni, so I'll be up there in a week or so (as soon as exams are over) to test.

I think that one is the AARC (Australian Automotive Research Centre???) near Anglesea. I've heard it is used/owned by Bosch, no idea how accurate that is.

The Ford You Yangs proving grounds are most definitely not open to the public. The road alongisde it is public, Holmsy and I took some photos/videos of an FG testing from the road... but got followed by a security car as we drove back.

Linfox Transport Group owns the track, the largest testing facility in Australia!

It looks like Toyota uses the facility now in Anglesea http://www.pressroom.com.au/pressroom/s ... seakit.htm

Image

This facility incorporates secure workshop areas and is capable of handling multiple test programs simultaneously.

The Anglesea proving ground provides access to a broad range of simulated circuits including.

* 4.1km bitumen highway circuit
* 10km second class gravel road
* 3.2 km brake test site
* Noise test site
* Dust track
* Wading bath
* Off-road course for heavy duty vehicles
* Four wheel drive tracks
* Gradients
* Low friction surfaces
* High speed testing

The You Yangs proving grounds actually extend a bit further south than that image (you can't see any of the Ford buildings in that shot). You can't see the oval from Sandry Creek Rd because it has high walls (presumably for camber).

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&g ... 8&t=h&z=14

All those dirt roads to the south of the oval are part of the proving grounds. That's where holmsy and I spotted an FG ages ago.

I think Bosch have bought PBR and they are currently in a changeover/merger phase between the 2 companies. One of the guys at uni said that the track was owned by a number of companies including Bosch, PBR, Lindsay Fox and others, but now that Bosch and PBR have merged they are the major stakeholder and have a lot of the control.

The Ford Testing grounds are VERY top secret, but obvoisly cant hide it from google.
my brother worked for a waterproofing company who had a contract for there.

only 2 people were allowed in all the tools had to be there a week in advance to be striped and searched, there's only 1 main entrance to the place and from there your striped of everything including cloths and givin overalls. No Phone's No Camera's No Nothing!
if you get caught taking photos/recording shit they have AFP(Australian federal police for those of you playing at home).

but he said after all that bulshit is taken care of is pretty cool, he did get to see and Boss 290 Rev out to 14,000rpm before blowing up.

Nothing really can be seen from the roadside unfortunatly. Alot of trucks use it for assorted training as well as some braking companies for testing.

A few years ago we done an advanced driving certificate there as well as a 4WD course. There is all sort of tracks and stuff there. The advanced driving one was interesting, we had to do events with traction on/off as well as ABS on/off.... Dirt, sealed, wet sealed, off cambered dirt/sealed, oval circut. Mainly more fun than skill developing but was quite an eye-opener to what a 4ch ABS system is capable of.
Anyone that rants and says "i can stop better than ABS can in the wet" is full of shit....
