Yes, these are holden questions. Any bs and Ill ban you.
Maverick engine is knocking. So im sussing out my options. A ford motor doesnt go in easily enough and the original motor is pushrodded, makes 63rwkw standard and is prone to having lots of head troubles.
Holden V8 or chev is the next easiest option.
Can a 304 out of a VN or later be made to run without an ECU? Can you put an earlier dizzy in them? The car will run straight gas research. I dont want to mess around with much wiring if I can avoid it.
What kind of rwkw do they make standard? How much cash would it take to get 150rwkw out of one?

Im guessing here, but i vaguely recall a mate putting a Dizzy on a VN 5L so i would say it is possible, and i dont think 150rwkw would be too hard to achieve

Hell yeah. While not knowing much about 304s, I have seen carbied 304s fitted to earlygirl commodores, kingswoods, and a torana (which had the plates [UFO.304] lol). Unsure on ignition side of things but I'd daresay VK-VL 304s (and earlier 308s) would have the gear you'd need?
BLACKOUT or SCUD or whatever he's called, his VB commodore FAKEID has a 304 in it I think?

all EFI holdens still run the dizzy
pretty simple to run them without the ECU apparently
100% standard the base model makes 120-130rwkw or so
150rwkw is a matter of a good exhaust with extractors and a good tune, anything more and you'll need a cam with supporting mods (springs etc)
with a manual and decent diff ratio behind them (3.7 or so) they feel pretty quick, even in a VN!
definately a good choice for a conversion seeing as you can pick up a complete engine with loom for around $1k

Sweet, 120-130rwkw is double what I have now. That would be enough power for me.
It seems to be the most common conversion around, I just know fuckall about the engines. I'd likely try to find a complete car to take apart.
Ill do some more googling re the dizzy business later today when ive got less to do.

a wreck could be had for around $1500 lol
they're a mad popular conversion for the early commodores
they're essentially the same style bottom end as the early V8s with some small changes, but biggest advantage to them is the heads.
the manifolds are aimed at low-mid range torque, not top end, so anything over 180rwkw can be done, but will begin to be a restriction
so fitting a decent carb manifold and decent carb will allow you to change that a bit
sometimes fitting the carb and manifold will gain power over the EFI setup
so i'd say your 150rwkw will be pretty easily achieved

There are a few engines getting sold on vss forum last time i looked .
Also they are pretty easy to get power out of them. Ive seen 180 out of one of these with air intake and exhaust extactors and good tune .

actually i just remembered your using straight gas
you can hook up the gas research throttle body straight to the standard manifold, plug up the injector holes, fit a HEI dizzy and coil from a VL and youd be sweet to go!
a CDI unit would be an advantage if your keen to splash a bit of cash around
or can run a carb manifold with a 90 degree bend ontop

My father in law just did a rebuild on his VR 304.
Mildly ported heads, cam, exhaust and conserveative tune on a stock bottom end got him 180rwkw.
Go for it! 5l Mav would be awesome.

the vn v6 makes 127kw
the vn v8 makes 160kw
the vp v8 makes 165kw
the vp ss makes 185kw
tho hsv did offer a 215kw in the last of the vps..
hope that helps

The Rod Shop do a conversion kit for around the $1k mark
- Bellhousing
- Clutch plate
- Pressure plate
- extention housing
- all bolts and washers

Thanks guys, it sounds like its all too easy. Not having EFI to wire up makes it a fair bit easier and cheaper.
Ill start collecting parts for when the mav's engine dies.
Gunns - The marks adapters kits seem to be more popular on the 4wd forums. I havent found anyone using a crs kit yet. The marks kits are a similar price.

The Holden 5.0 is a pretty good motor, as mentioned before the long runners on the stock manifold are the main restriction, will begin to draw vacuum above about 180-190rwkw~. Otherwise, biggest problem is that the stock oil pump will give up the ghost with lack of servicing and/or abuse, and they're prone to throwing p/steer belts at sustained high RPM.
VS3/VT1 had thermofans, otherwise you're looking at clutch fan.
Good motor, heaps of go-faster bits.

i think the 1uz would end up costing more
would need full custom kit, plus its EFI, so more hassle
holden 5ltr wins out in cheapness and easy simpleness lol

Evan - Nah, all the kits for falcon engines are shit apparently.
A 304 would have heaps more power for the bush. The stock engine is alright, my only complaint is how it struggles up hills.

he's probably looking for something thats got a 1/2 decent conversion kit.
chances are theres not many conversion kits for Mav's to put a 351 in.

Seen a Vitara with Landcrusier SAS and a VS ecotec in it, and they have tiny engine bays compared to patrols
Havn't heard much about putting V8s in tho sorry

Are ' Holden 5 Litres' now 3.8L V6s?
A 304 with an EFI manifold and stock heads would be ideal for off-roading, I'd imagine you want as much torque as possible, rather than a high peak rwkw reading.
Eagle Auto Parts sell brand new 350c short motors for $2880, then you need manifold, dizzy and ancilleries. I imagine you could get a complete VN-style 5L for a fair bit less.
Are there any LS1 conversion kits available?

considering a complete wrecked VN V8 will be $1500, that would be the way to go
LS1 would be more than double in cost, but so much cooler lol

Wheel stands break stuff. Every time I jump the thing I break stuff in my front end.
Working on the front end sucks arse, so much grease and diff oil.
Cheaper 5 litre or rebuilt stock motor is the go, I dont want to spend LS1 money on it otherwise I'd get rid of this one off and get a GU instead.

so a 304 goes in easier then a 4L?
4L would be cheaper to do though wouldn't it?

Yes it has a better conversion kit. Dellow makes the 4 litre fitting kits and from all reports they are shthouse.
V8's are more betterer than NA 6 packs too.
I dont want to do an engine conversion then need boost as well.

i agree a V8 would be nice

140rwkw isnt that hard to get out of a 6, thats all.
$1500 on a VN plus needing to chase up dizzy etc + conversion kit
is just alot more then what you'd pay for a 4L these days.
but if the conversion kit is junk, then i can understand

plus.. a 5L will sound mint

sound mint..... especially on a SWB with not much length for an exhaust!
sorry i have nothing to add but that. sound like some nice plans tho.
