Question about DIY shiftkits and adding an on/off LED

So ive tried asking this on the fordmods website but im only getting wise ass remarks. people here are nicer, so ill try it here :)

ive got my parts for my shift kit and i plan to solder it up this weekend, but i want to add an LED into the circuit so it is ON when the shift kit is on, and off when its off. heres the diagram of how to wire it up:

Image

i PM'd a few guys on here & fordmods and this is the reply i got-

from fordmods:
i have done a quick sketch on how it works, you add it between the switch and the new 6.7k resistor so its on when the kit is on, then add power to number 30 and 87 out to the LED then earth the other side of the LED. you might need to check and make sure the current the shiftkit provides is enough to throw a relay. so try and find a smaller sized relay. falcons use 30amp stock but you can go upwards and lower ratings

so yeah, i have to add a relay somewhere in there. but speaking to amon, member n here who is an auto elec, he told me that all i need is a small resistor as LEDS require near no voltage to run. thinking about it too much makes my brain hurt, as i have a very very limited mental capacity when it comes to electronic circuits.

i thought id post it up on here in the hope that a few people with some electronics knowledge may know how to wire it up properly! id like to avoid using a relay if i have to, as i have no idea how they work!

PS- i have a 6 point switch, and ill wire it up exactly the way it says in the first diagram, but what points do i wire the LED to?!

goodwork matey, i am going to fit my shift kit this week and although its variable , i think i might like an LED for when its not on stock mode... .. i suppose fitting an LED inline to the power when its turned on would suffice ? and do you think it would get brighter depending on what setting it might be on ( voltage etc ?)

Nice work, yep I do with I had an LED to show for it, would be nice but as my shiftkit is on always, I guess its no biggie.

I think with most of them types of switches, you wire to the opposite side of where the switch is toggled.
Just imagine that toggle went a centimeter or 2 longer through the switch, it would point to the 2 pins that are connected. (if that makes sense?)
So in your diagram, your 2 bottom pins would be connected with the switch in that position..

If your just asking which position is on, I'll have a better look tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it but atm I'm too tired to work things out :P

The LED wont need a relay, it draws milliamps, just hook it strait into 12v with a resister in series with it... I can't remember what value, I'll remember tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Hope that helps in some way...

I wont pretend I know anything about elec wiring but to my small imagination, the easiest way would to buy a toggle from Repco with the little LED in the end. Would that work?

You'll need about a 560ohm resistor in series with the LED to run it strait off 12 volts.

Without knowing any voltages on that circuit I cant say weather or not you'll need the resistor, from what the guy has said, you would 'cut' wire 6 and put the LED in series there...

I'm not sure it will work, if you have a multimeter, you should test for 12v around the circuit both while it is on and off.

BUT

If you have a 6 pin switch, it will make this a lot easier.

From what that guy said to you, the kit will be on when wire 6 is linked...

So connect the other side of the switch where next to wire 6

If the light is on when the shift kit is off, then switch the LED's link to the other side of the switch

Relays are only used when you have a lot of current to switch, like your lights or thermo fans (around about 30 - 60 amps?)... an LED draws less than 1/4 of an amp...

**** yes. this is why i love forums. that picture is pretty much the best diagram i could ask for. i havent tried it yet, but i guess mission (partly) accomplished!
