Fkn rust. Help?

Postby Phillis » February 8th, 2009, 8:53 am

Ive got a problem with some rust in the dog legs of my car.

I had it taken care of in late october last year, but it seems that its already come back. The dog leg on the rear quater of the wagon has what seems to be bubbling underneath the new paint.

Image

excuse the bad picture quality. Its clearly rust, and its on both sides of the car. The passenger side is worse than the drivers side.

The surface hasnt broken yet but im pretty sure it will soon. Its in a bitch of a place, and im wondering what kinda prices would be involved in getting 2 new rear quater panels and replacing these- Or would cutting the affected area out with a grinder and replacing it be easier?

Id take it back to the panel shop that did it originally but my mate works there and aparently ive been 'running my mouth' about his shoddy workmanship on my car.

Anyone else had rust in tight places like this? What'd you to go get rid of it?

Yeh mine has a spot of rust there aswell, not to stressed about it at the moment. I think the water comes in through the clip holes from the window trim mould and gets stuck in the dog leg of the EF wagons that has a rubbery like foam filled dog leg. When I do fix it I think I will dig all that shit out and spray some body deadener in there.

I've also had rust at that same spot in the EA. I had it cut out probably about 4 years ago. The panelbeaters just cut a small square out, and welded in a new bit of steel. I've now got a small rust patch on the top of the guard but the dogleg still looks good

remind me to check out your rust :D

my biggest worry is that its going to keep going down, under the 'skirt' of the car, or around onto the flat part where the actual door covers when its shut. so replacing the dog leg is a hell of alot easier than replacing the panel?

yeah thats a common problem with the E-series, its a water trap, water gets in, and there is some spongy foam that absorbs it. The ony way to fix rust is to cut it out, weld a new section in and treat the inside with some cavity wax etc.

so after talking to a few people today, its not as easy as cutting the dogleg out and replacing it with another. you wont be able to get a spot welder in there. hmm.

so who knows a good panel shop? i seriously feel so dirty for having rust in her

Bullshit, any panelbeater should be able to get a spot welder in there.

But, depending on how big the rust is, it may only need a small secion cut out, not the whole dogleg. Thats how we have done it before (On wagons)...

you dont really need to cut it out(if its rface rust and not eaten through making the panel thin).... just grind it all out.. it will spread like cancer unless you get all of it... and seal it immediately after its been done then fill it straight away.... any moisture on bare metal will cause rust immediately...whether you see it or not and cant be left exposed for any time..

when i took the car in to get repaired the first time, they ground it out and spot welded a piece of steel back in. im guessing they didnt get all of it because its back now, just 3 months after it was fixed!

yep, if they got it all, then it would be fine... there should be no pitting in surface at all...thats still rust...must be smooth..
