new, but not really...

Hi all,

im not really new, but im finally in oz, and i have just bought an el fairmont. was really just bought as a cheap daily, but im kinda liking it, so the braincells are slowly getting a plan for it... much to the missus' disgust.

quick question... do all the el's have really crap headlights? mine are really sh%$house... the lenses have gone yellow so i am guessing that will be the main cause... can it be fixed?

also the digital display for the aircon dosnt work, is there an easy way to fix?

welcome mate.

As for the aircon it could just be that the unit needs a new globe or the unit itself is fucked. Globes can be picked up from any auto store and C\C units from wreckers.

Yeh, hopefully its just a blown globe. they are wedge style globes, aka T10 (dont get a LED though, theyre no where near bright enough)

Headlights on EF/EL are shithouse to start with, then theres the whole yellowing shit that happens. You can wet'n'dry it out, starting at like 800 to 2000 and then cut n polish, or you can buy new ones from ebay - bout $150+ tho, so 5 bux worth of sandpaper and a few hours of your time might be the better thing to try first ;)

legends, cheers for that.

gonna have to get it booked in to get the air con looked at cos its about as cold as a can of beer left in the sun...

if anyone finds some cheap springs il be keen too, gotta get rid of the 4wd like ride height. just have to keep costs to a minimum cos we have to buy a house load worth of furniture as well lol...

time for another random question...

lately my fairmont has developed an intermittant problem... its just shuts down randomly... usually when coming into an intersection on light throttle its like ive just turned it off... all the electrics keep going, its just the motor that shuts down, no coughing or rough running, it just shuts off. 99% of the time i just flick it into neutral and start it and flick it back into drive and its all sweet, the car hasnt even stopped rolling lol, but once it just wound over and over but did start in the end, and once it just point blank refused too start one night after work. but started first go the next morning....
i was thinking maybe fuel pump? any ideas?

Disconnected the battery lately? Mine idles like a pig after doing this, and sometimes revs as low as 400 or stalls. Comes good after a week or 2.
