My Supra.

Hi all. I thought I should introduce myself. I've been reading and gathering info on here for a while. My name is Glenn I live in Newcastle. My daily is a hilux(tow vehicle). While my better half drives a series 3 AU Wagon. Basically stock except for the Lovells springs and shocks and the 17 inch wheels. The main reason for my interest here is my race car. Up until 12 month ago I was racinig an Escort Sports Sedan in the NSW Championship. Then the oportunity to buy a space frame car came up. So the Escort was sold and the supra was bought. It came with all the bits to make it a roller but no engine or gearbox. Yep I know what you are thinking. What is he doing on here with a supra? Let me explain. Being bit of a Ford nut and hearing about the Barra's making big power and wanting to be a bit different I started looking into a turbo 6. Class rule limit turbo engine size to 3.529L. So I started looking at the 3.2 from the EA. Then I found the 221 with its 87.88mm crank. So together with 200ci rods, Au pistons and a EA block bored to suit it comes in just under the class limit. Also because I wanted to prove this could be done and I'm on the tightest of tight budgets the motor was put together from second hand parts. I've had a couple of issues along the way. This year has been a learning year. Also being on such a tight budget my development gets done at the race meeting. Anyway thats the short version. So look past the fact its a supra and remember it's powered by a Falcon motor.

Still yet to get it on the Dyno. I've been doing my tuning at the track. Wouold be happy with anything over 400rwhp. The Escort had over 300rwhp and this feels lots stonger.

Cheers guys ECU is a megasquirt 3. Rev limit is set at 6500. It's on the conservative side as there is no history of this combination. I would like to think 7000 to 7500 would be safe for the bottom end but not sure about the rockers?

Yeah I like it :D

What do you think about the 221 crank? Is it just straight out of an early falcon and it went straight in...?

What intake manifold and PCV setup are you using? Looks like it had a little hiccup from your FB page :/

Crank Is almost a direct swap. Yep from an XT. 1968-69 falcon. I like it because of the stroke but I would prefer billet or forged. Inlet is the log manifold. Reusing pistons was the problem. One was weakened when being removed from the AU rod. Won't be doing that again. I've Also stripped the teeth off the oil pump drive to idler gear. Is this a known weakness?

I don't recall seeing others on here rip teeth off the pump drive, but apparently they have problems with the auxillary drive wearing out in the front of the block - I noticed when building the motor for our car that the front main bearing can obscure or partially obscure the oil supply to the aux shaft if the hole isn't drilled in the right place. Something to check when you put it back together.

Make sure you run a catch can for the breathers (if they are being re-routed back into the intake) because in some situations it's possible to hydraulic number 6 and/or 5 by filling the manifold full of oil.

Yeah I read here about the oil feed. I modded the hole to give better oil flow. Even the one I have in now is showing signs of wear.

I run breathers to a catch tank so no worries about filling the manifold with oil.

Man what an interesting combo! Will be interesting to hear what the power delivery is like at 3.5L and if it changes the spread of power/torque

I'm in love, I'd really like to see the dyno graph for this car when/if it's ever dynoed.

I have always been curious to see how a 3.2 with boost would go.

Bore and stroke are 92.26 by 87.88. I'm also on the lookout for a 3.9 block that is good enough to bore to 92mm.

This is cool.

Great to hear there's an option other than finding an EA 3.2 (which I've also been looking for for some time!)

Just a tip mate, the later 91DA log inlet manifolds (eb2-ed) out flow the ea manifold. By a bit im told.....

Did you really block off the oil pump pressure relief? That might explain why it stripped the pump gears

Yeah but I run a peterson remote pressure relief valve. I did have the pressure set at 80psi. A bit high. I'm used to the SR20 and the Cosworth from the Escort. Thats what I used to run on them but they would rev to 9000. I now have it set to 60psi and there a wear marks on the teeth.

The Escort block has a very sinmilar setup and it ran 80psi for years without problem.

Ah right. Yeah 80 is pretty high. I'd be pretty worried about putting extra load on those gears if you look at them they aren't very beefy.

Here are some pictures of a EA, 200ci and 221 crank. Main differences are the balancing wieghts, rear main seal and flywheel bolt pattern of the 221.
