Launching / Racing a ZF Turbo

Wanting to take my FG down the quarter in the next few weeks so thought it may be time to start doing some research and practice on how to launch her.

It's running around mid 300's at the treads, will be running brand new average quality 19" street tyres which seem to grip a lot better than the Police spec Bridgey's it had on before.

I've heard a few and read few posts in the past regarding stalling it up in 2nd to build the boost, then down-shifting to 1st when it's ready to go and manually going through the gears. Other people have said performance mode without manual shift, stall up and away you go when ready.

Should DSC be on or off?

If anyone wants to lend me some tyres let me know

Running a ZF tune with factory heat exchanger / oil cooler so don't want to strain her too much even though I have access to 2 spare boxes lol.

Non icer tip: You want to get it on boost before you leave the line. Foot brake it as much as you can before it starts creepin off. Really jam your foot down on the brake like your standing on Rihanna's neck. Even street tyres will benefit from dropping the pressure a little, maybe let 5psi out of them and see what happens. Also doing a burnout on street tyres has nearly no benefit - by all means do it 4DLOLZ but it will probably hurt your times.

Icer tip: You want to turn the boost up to 11ty and just try and make one good pass for a 9. Also if you just spend $30k-33k you can put in a powerglide and the whole problem just goes away. Also consider cutting the whole body off and replacing it with fibreglass. Easy 8z.

It might not be the same for every track but I've found in the past at willowbank that a bit of a skid does help, even with street tyres.

The trick is that you don't do a sick 4th gear standstill in the water and then lift off and drive out - you drive just past the water (or start in the water and immediately creep out) and then to a very low speed (but at full noise in first) short skid up to the line.

This bakes all the expensive sticky rubber from other peoples tyres onto yours, and they will grip better. Managed 1.9s on 17" street tyres with this method.

Yeah a bit of a skid is the go.. only a small one.
I don't think you'll get much benefit out of stalling it in 2nd with street tyres.. it'll just bake them harder.

Also if it axle tramps or anything funky get out of the throttle asap.

Should the little FG turbo need that much help boosting up?
Or maybe MID-300's it has a different turbo?

Don't know why people are saying smash it back to first.
Because if the zf works like the 4 speed You hold second let the brake off and let go of the shifter and it will leave in first.

Don't bother with second gear on street Tyres, it will go back to fist then immediately start limiter bashing.

Small skid, just first gear.

Hard on the brakes and leave it in sports mode.

I got my best time shifting manually, dsc off. But that was in a xr8, so the turbo torque might make a difference.

definitely handbrake aswell, I found the typhoon wanted to creep a little, practice getting it on to launch boost as quixk as possible, if you sit on the stall to long the box freaks out and goes in to safety mode, revs will drop off and launch goes to shit.

ZF stays in second from the line. If you put it in Perf and select 2nd it won't go back to 1st like a BTR.

I'm scared to strain the box so hard but holding the brake hard to build boost.

My guess is it'll spin or tramp on the Tyres an run a 13 or snap the input shaft.

The 9s F6 someone mentioned would prob not be running a stock box or at least input shaft.

first run, little bit of stall, leave it in performance mode, and let it do the work, after that try some more aggressive techniques.

Has yours got a stock tail shaft? That's the first thing I'd be worried about, but if its only on street tyres I don't think you'll have an issue.

I dunno what street tyres you other guys are running but I'm sure building boost in 2nd and going back to first or needing to use the handbrake and brakes to hold it will result in a 1/4 mile powerskid..

My EF loved 3000rpm+ and 10psi off the line with Mickey T's and a stock diff/tailshaft/BTR.... the FG will love it! haha

fyi, with a 4sp btr u cant select 2nd from stationary. it will auto go back to 1st in pref mode. Unless it is a full manualized setup. But yes, stock tailshaft, mid 300s + ETs will not end up well with the zf.

Again, mine was a V8 not a 6T, but I killed the ZF by limiter bashing in first, so be careful there. I think mine was on the way out anyway though as it had towed before I bought it, but it only took a couple of manual flicks back to first to do a skid, I never even dragged the thing! Stalling mine on the foot brake in performance mode instantly resulted in wheel spin too.

Yes you can,only goes back to first when ya let go of the shifter.

what do you mean. In Pref i click it in 2nd on the foot brake and it auto goes back to 1st.

anyway im sure this is off topic. noone launches a 4spd like that anyway

Put it in D for Drag, bit of stall and go for it.
