How to get into drifting

So other than hitting the industrials what is the best way to get involved and try this out in Vic?

Do I need a cams license, roll cage or any of that bs? I see winton has fun days but it doesn't look like they encourage skids.

Vic Drift have a beginners section at their days.. i think they normally hit up Winton which only needs AASA licence ($50 or so)

There are also some other 'driver training' days that offer it with instruction etc.

Is be keen to organise a beginners drift day with the club, I'm sure wed have enough people to make it a bit of fun.
Can we drive there with no vic licence?

ive just got myself a ed turbo with a tko600 that me and my brothers are going to try some drifting with.
i recon just for fun a falcon would be good this is all we are doing it for.
if u were to get competetive then ud want a jap car imo.
ed40 u seem to do alright in urs.

Vic Drift has days like every 2 months mate.
We spoke to the guy who runs it when we did our skid pan day ,.
He said the best is to get in touch with Vic drift and they will send you info when stuff is on .
They generally hold days at winton.

I believe they had a day last month . and were looking to do one in the new year.

Yeah all the info is on their site.

The days dont happen very often and all the spots seem to fill up super quick.

Probably be alright to go a couple times a year but its not often enough to buy an import just for it imo.

Apparently calder doesnt do it anymore.

whats the deal seam's you need a roll cage or at least a half cage as part of there scrutineering ?.. if this is the case big effort.

and il need to build one.

i went to winton with luke about 2 years ago in i think october when he drifted his EA, and they passed his crapper with no cage and massive quarter panel damage. and pritty sure it was a vicdrift event.

Nah from what I read you only need a cage if you want to take a passenger.

Scrutineering Guidelines

* Front and rear Hazard lights and brake lights must be operational.

* ALL wheel nuts must be fitted and tight. Regardless if the car was 4 stud from factory, if it has 5 stud hubs, all studs and nuts must be there.

* No visible oil under vehicle at all. If you have spilled oil doing an oil change etc clean it up, don't leave drips under the car or you will be knocked back for an oil leak.

Fire Extinguishers
- must meet ADR's
- must be securely mounted with screws, be in a low safe position and within reach of the drivers seat while seated. NOT cable tied to roll cage etc,

Helmets
- must be presented on the passenger seat visible to scrutineers
- must conform with Australian Standard: AS1698, USA standard: Snell SA95, M90, SA95, SA2000

* No loose items in cabin.

* Firmly mounted drivers seat with all anchor bolts fitted. Passenger seat (if fitted) must also be secure and anchored with all bolts if roll cage is fitted.

* Firmly mounted Harness or seat belt system for driver. Passenger side also if roll cage is fitted. No tears, fraying or damage to belt webbing.

* Battery must be firmly clamped in place, and if a wet style battery is fitted within the passenger compartment, it must be in a box.

* Fluid reservoirs in engine bay securely mounted, and any reservoirs on exhaust side MUST have an absorbent cover. E.G Sock, Glove etc.

* Any fuel system components MUST be sealed from passenger compartment. A cardboard box is not an acceptable cover!

Exhaust systems:
- must finish outside the perimeter of the vehicles bodywork. No exhausts to finish halfway underneath the vehicle.
- must not exceed more than 100mm past the perimeter of the rear of the vehicle.
- exhaust outlet must not be dumping gas in a steep upwards direction
- All forms of wastegates on turbocharged vehicles are ALLOWED.
- All cars running an external wastegate on their turbo setup need to pay due care and that the exhaust from the external gate is not lower than the exhaust system.
- All cars must ensure their exhaust exits past the perimeter of the car. "dropped pipes" are NOT ALLOWED

* Cars must have all exterior body panels on and bolted on securely. (exception made for front/rear bumper bars)

*All cars must run an effective spark arrester -All cars must run a minimum of one spark arrester in their exhaust system in the form of a muffler/resonator or catalytic converter. This is a SAFETY issue to avoid any fires when cars come off the track.

* oil catch cans must not be an open tin of baked beans or similiar. It must be a sealed container able to support hot oil safely.

Dont need to do that. We can just take the ute. It's already manual and has a lokka. We'll just need to weld the chassis to the diff to stop it riding like a boat.

It'd be a long day. 6.5 hrs of driving just to get to winton and back. : /

the drive is so long you went back in time 4 months lol...

yeah this weekend is a practice day... just under 1 month since their last 2 day event.... so it happens fairly regularly.... jump the bandwagon dan... i just need to trade my soarer for a drift car.. or get a manual and some coilovers for the soarer

yeah... u can tow my drifter up? when i get it

its not that bad.. hume the whole way, like 230k each way.... if you camp the night before its like $20 for a site... and then u can get pissed with everyone else...

next time they do a matsuri tow the ute up friday night... its 2 days stay 2 nights and then drive back sunday night... epic weekend

Move to Brisbane... there is a track 30min from here that runs drift practice every Thursday night called Full Lock Motorsport Park (old Archerfield Go-Cart Track), Queensland Raceway runs drift practice on the main track and a wet skidpan once a month, there is a couple of wet skidpan areas at Lakeside Raceway available for bookings (no dry track drifting allowed at Lakeside because of noise restrictions though) and there is Mt Cotton Driver Training Facility with a massive wet skid pad and a smaller wet figure eight wet skidpan available for bookings... then there is Roadcraft Driver Training Facility just under two hours away in Gympie which is popular and available via group bookings also. Oh I nearly forgot about Stadium Drift at the Gold Coast Parklands, that is a dry track and they hold comps and general public practice sessions there regularly. Plus for the more intermediate and pro drivers they use the Broadwater Pool Car Park a couple of times a year.

I've probably forgotten some other venues too. You guys really need to get these sort of venues happening down south... they closed Oran Park (in Sydney I know) last year didn't they? Oran Park had a wicked dry skidpan as evidenced in the Drifters Unleashed DVDs.
