how do you go about a roady with a half cage? or do they make it unroadworthy-able

thats why u get a pre fab bolt in shit.... weld in = no roady lol.... if u need a roady on a car with a cage you're doing it wrong anyway

well i beleive its all about clearances to your head etc.
bars have to be so much from your head. or padded (maby)
and if they intrude in the back then the rear seat needs to be removed.

i see an advantage to having a cage - it makes the car safer. although the govt did replace the seatbelts in imported euro cars in the 70s & 80s with aus std ones (not as good) to make it look like the aus cars werent so far behind in safety

How much you reckon for a six point with one diagonal in the hoop and two diagonals in the roof, with side intrusion on driver and passenger side for an E21 BMW? Also is the steel/welding/mount points ETC all CAMS ok? I've been told (by Brown Davis) going the dual diagonal in the roof means it's easy to convert to Targa spec down the track (or for a potential sale for Targa use) by adding an extra diagonal in the hoop? Also do you weld seat mounts to the cage etc? What about stitching the pillars to the cage?

lol dan makes a good point.

cages are normally for use in a car with a 5 point harness and helmet.
a normal seatbelt and no helmet it wouldnt be hard in a roll to slip out and have all kinds of issues. or even without slipping out. moving around enough to have issues

did they send you the pics of the e36 m3 they did a cage on and the guy hit a tree at like 200 or some shit... the entire car is fucked and the cage is mint

All our cages are bolt in, have been crush tested, are roadworthy and cams approved. I'm not trying to slag out ybyavl's work or hype up my own but anyone who puts a home-build weld in cage in a car with intentions of drifting or racing is a straight up git.

Our are expensive- no surprises there. but when you put your car into a tree at 196km/h or roll 7 times at the bottom of the sandown straight, your going to walk away relatively well, as opposed to having a 1 3/4 inch bit of chromolly pipe through your torso.

FWIW, we've just finished making 146,000 roll bars to go in ford everests in south African mines and are just about to start another few thousand for BHP. That's gotta mean something to anyone serious about a rollcage.

Pm me with an email adress if you want pictures of how a 3series Beamer looks after hitting a tree at 190km/h with one of our cages in it.

If you do to FIA specs it's pretty safe anyway IIRC? Also Phillis - I assume your response means you work at BD? Price I got wasn't really THAT expensive!

that is some hectic f**ked up damage on the BMW....were the blokes in it still alive...the drivers cab looks fine...except left a pillar but that f**k all...must be are really good cage to keep that in one piece. i dont want to go that far with my cage, just enough to keep the car solid

as off Jan 2011 Roll-bar and Roll-cage Installation has been totally revised to include three new codes. ... Code LK8 now covers one-off roll-bars and roll-cages, LK9 covers the design of commercially produced rollbars, roll-cages and ROPS.
Code LK10 covers the installation of devices certified under Code LK9.

Just an update for anyone looking to do a cage. As of Jan 2012 rules have changed again. If anyone is interested in a half cage or full cage and what materials used, migd or tigd, etc just ask. I build race cages for everything from dirt curcuit to $380,000 chromemoly offroad truggies and trucks. My boss has an excellent rep in the off road business (30 years experience and has plenty of championship winning cars and championships himself) as that is his specialty but i work part time for him and has been teaching me to do in car cages that are bolt in and weld in for the last 2 years. Yes they are not cheap but I am willing to look at better prices for members here. You can have a half cage that is street legal and cams approved, but cannot feature any side intrusion bars. (this is for SA only other states vary on street laws) We make them with full cams approval or andra (tighter rules than cams as alot of andra cars have only the cages as the chassis) if you want. PM me or when I have finished my own full cage in my eb in the next couple of months I will post up some pics. Am also doing one for a R32skyline that I could get some pictures of in the next couple of weeks if anyone is interested. Cages suitable for most people here would be made from CDW or CDS steel as Chromemoly is to expensive for most people to take. Hope this helps.
