Who here races or knows someone who uses an EL 4.0 for track

Postby tuf250 » October 6th, 2015, 4:45 pm

Hi all,

I have been wanting to start a budget track car build for a while now. I have an AU XR8 that I was planning to use but I am not sure I can bring myself to stripping it.

My parents are getting rid of their EL Gli 4.0 which is a great car with a lot of good equipment in it. It was the car I learnt to drive in too which is a cool bonus. It is a GLi so it's light and has a live axle so big weight advantage.

This way I can keep the XR8 as a street car which I think it a better option.

The car is an auto but manual conversions can be had cheaply these days.

Just keen on hearing from others that have run ELs or other E Series as club track cars.

I know that they are very reliable. I was at Winton in my daily the other day and saw an EL and AU there.

Anyway any thoughts would be great on how they run, brakes etc.

Thanks.

Jason.

On a budget, get slotted rotors all round, and EBC red stuff pads.

Cut the springs to get the ride height where you want it (low but not stupidly so) and get good shocks - Koni yellow, bilstein etc.

Get some adaptors from www.tiperformance.com.au to fit AU upper control arms, set about 9.5* caster and 1-1.5* neg camber, with minimal toe.

Get a good seat with a harness too.

Mini spool the diff (80 bucks off ebay I believe)

Good idea to do an oil and filter change and a good coolant flush with a new thermostat as well.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

Sprints. Brakes are my big concern. Not sure who sells upgrade kits for them these days?

Apart from what Rollin has said I would add some extra stuff.

Cooling and brake problems will be your biggest concern at the start. Nut these out first before chasing power.

Get an ebay alloy rad, good coolant (i wouldnt use water wetter), hi-flow thermostat and run it on pump e85. You will probably need a fuel pump and maybe some bigger injectors though.

Brakes. --> I'd search for a cheap UPC kit with SLOTTED rotors and get some good pads and fluid. Project Mu pads. Dont cheap out otherwise you will run out of brakes after a few laps which makes it a waste of time.

Tyres. Search for a second hand set of Rcomps if you can otherwise use some Federal RSR or Kumho KU36. Tyres make a MASSIVE difference to laptimes, even more than horsepower IMO.

Gut it and set up some brake ducting and you will have some awesome fun with it man.

Look through my thread if you want my car has seen plenty of track stuff.

AU upper arm adaptors will improve the cornering ability massively, I still cant get over it every time I throw my EF around. Highly recommended.
