Launch RPM?

Postby Malakai » October 17th, 2008, 10:49 am

What RPM do you find is the best to launch at and why?

I generally aim for around 2300 to 2500, that's around about the RPM which I get full boost at full throttle. So once I let the clutch out and it loads up boost is there pretty much straight away. I'm looking to refine my technique though.

Obviously you need to adjust for surface conditions to minimise wheel spin.

But otherwise what have you found works best?

5000 GRAND for me

You launch at 5 million rpm?

In my EF I would stall it to about 2700 on the brakes and get minimal wheelspin off the line, just enough to keep the engine in it's powerband for that first second.
All the turbo manual BA-BF's I've driven I found 2500-ish to be an ideal take-off rpm with a bit of clutch slip, then flooring it by the time the clutch is all the way out. Any more and it becomes more of a burnout than a launch, and any less it bogs down, although nothing compared to an R32 Skyline.

Depends on cam, stall speed and gears.

If your cam and stall start around 3000 for example.
I would hold at 2500 and flash it.
I am a big fan of flashing the convertor (unless you make monster power)
This way torque gets you out of the hole for a best 60ft.

I only have a Gtech to go buy, but the best 60ft i get from a near stock AU is from around 2000rpm stall. Anything more is a little wheel spin or bog down. Anything less it slugs off the mark.
NOW AU Fairmont - 2.5" zorst - dev4 - big stereo - T3 kit
SOON - to4e - 3" zorst - PWR front mount - stall + diff - lotta $ to be spent =(

In my NA 6 in first it'll wheelspin its tits off if your try to launch it above 3 grand, thats just slippin the clutch.
I can dump it at 2-2.5k rpm, and then slowly floor it, or slip it between 2.5-3k. Either way full throttle in first normally equals mass wheelspin lol.

With my current set up, 1200rpm seems to work well for me.
Anything higher than 1600-1800rpm and the tyres just bake.

depending on how sticky the track is, but anything from 4000-5000rpm. the only thing i could get to complain with those launches was the diff.

krisisdog, you have to lower your tyre pressures, and also do a nice skid to get the tyres sticky.

the track is completely different to the street. for me, 1500rpm soon turn's into 6000rpm and going no where on the street.

Yeh, my launches arent at the strip, and im running 35ish psi in 205s 15"s, so I'm sure I could launch at at 4k with decent tread.

You do realise street tyres, don't exactly 'heat up' very well. Unless you plan on doing some monster burnout, which most places wont let you do. It's really only good to do it, to clean the crap off your tyres.
Slicks on the other hand...

Around 8,000rpm is a good rpm to launch at. Slip the clutch a little so the front doesn't come up, lol 8-)

For the EL, around 3 grand and slip the clutch to stop it bogging down.

The best way to get the most traction at the drags is to start your skid *just* out of the water in the water trough, and get onto the actual track as soon as possible - creep down past all the water that people have dragged onto the track and really back the f*ck out of your tyres on the dry stuff.

The point is not to heat your tyres so much, but to coat them with all the rubber that is already stuck to the track, which gives the best friction co-efficient. OED and I have found that by doing the above, out rear tyres are still noticably sticky to touch, even after we've lined back up in the staging lanes.

My car wasn't making much power N/A (98rwkw) but I still managed some 2.0XX sec 60' times out of it launching at 4000rpm at Heathcote on my way to a dismal 17.1 second quarter..
I found with stacks of heat in the tyres (235/17 @ 30psi), I could literally dump the clutch in a split second it would just launch like an animal, no slipping required. I ended up with my dash mat on my lap and the fuse cover sitting on the floor at one stage. At Calder Park however, I could only dial in 3000rpm, and I needed to ride the clutch to get it off the line with minimal wheelspin... and got 2.2-2.3 60' times and a 15.6 ET to show for it :(

^^ 15.6 aint bad for 98kw!!!!

when mine was n/a auto, with 205s, without doing a skid i got better traction (usually street tires are shitty after they are skidded) i used to stall it up to around 2000, not sure of 60ft, but managed a 14.7 with stock gears and 205rwhp

Also overdoing it on street rubber will make them slipperier if they've got silicon in the compound. The silicon will make its way to the surface if heated up (and the spinning tyre will assist this in a centrifugal manner), semi-coating the surface with slippery silicon instead of sticky rubber.

As for an auto, NEVER N-bomb it lol. Find how high you can stall it up in gear (with your foot hard on the brake, skid style) without wheelspin & that's where you should launch from (assuming you've got no high-stall and a stock-ish engine).

Its okay mate you dont need to prove yourself to me, I was just asking how you can slip a clutch from 5k rpm without frying the **** out of it. Not calling you a liar or anything, but I find it farken hard to believe a stock standard clutch could withstand 100+ runs down the strip, especially if any of them were 5k launches.

Well to be honest prop about 20 or 25 of them wouldnd be at 5 grand. but most of them are.
Paul from CVE on here would also prob done about 20 to 2 5 of them as well.

Im not trying to prove myself mate im just stating that this is what hi have done and been doing .
Well i prob thinking that i may need a new clutch soon but yeah thats after alot of years of driving .

To be honest i know nothing about drag racing and tend to go on what my mechanic tells me .
Now that we have gone to some mt radial s i think that a new clutch would be needed and most likely that will change my situation on revs.

foot on the brake n plant acc??? wouldnnt it just spin
or put it in N rev in out then slam it to first. which wouldnt to good for the gear box

So you're slipping the clutch at 5k rpm?? How many clutches you go through doing that??

FairmontXR6 wrote:With my current set up, 1200rpm seems to work well for me.
Anything higher than 1600-1800rpm and the tyres just bake.

My car is Automatic.

Bah, I need something other than stock 3.08 gearing then lol. 2nd does just over a hundred atm, but it does get there pretty quick :) .
Was thinking of 3.7s rather than 4.11s as I do a bit of hwy driving, and I dont have a 6spd :(, otherwise I probably would get 4.11s, and also getting a locka rather than an LSD. $$$ either way.
