Welcome to Part #1 of Cheap Modifications to your eSeries.

Today were talking about "Air Intake Mods"

One downfall for the EA to ED's are there Air intake snorkles and in the case of EB2/ED their throttlebody piping. But Ill talk about that later. The EA intake snorkle is pretty asthmatic. I have no idea why Ford used this style with a large round cylinder around it. the EB2/ED snorkle is better then the EA one, but can be better. The EF/EL flow pretty well from stock but there is allways room for improvement 8)

Some things you can do for your EA/EB/ED

1. Install a ED snorkle (Ignore if EB2/ED owner since you have it  )
I noticed very little difference to no difference from the EA snorkle. I wouldnt bother unless you have it lying around or are given one.

2. Install a XH snorkle
Around $35 from your local ford dealership. This allows alot more air to enter your airbox and in some case's is noticable. My old motor reved out alot better with the XH but no difference with the new one.

3. Install a POD Filter.
This is a very popular item at the moment. Installing it to the end of your throttlebody piping without containing it in a airbox is unroadworthy and illegal. It also doesnt allow cold air to enter the filter as your sucking your enginebay temprature air in. You can modify your EA/ED Airbox with alot of hassle or install a EF/EL airbox with little modification. This information will be added later.

Special note for EB2/ED owners....
One easy mod to your car that can be done is installing the EA MPFI throttle body piping. Yes I know, installing a old EA part into a EB/ED! But its larger and will allow more air to flow into the intake manifold. Most wreckers will charge like $5 tops.

Some things you can do for your EF/EL

1. Install a Tickford snorkle
This is a great start and the equivalant of the XH snorkle for the EA to ED.
around the same price as XH snorkle from your local ford dealership. many people have noticed gains from this cheap mod & is completely legal to mr plod.

2. Install a POD Filter to your EF airbox
This easy modification done with a good quality pod can have noticeable gains. It sits nicely inside your airbox so isnt seen from the exterior and replaces your old pannel filter.
For info refer "POD FILTER later in this doco.

3. Install customized throttlebody piping
Many EF/EL owners have optioned for the mandrel bend intake piping. This besides giving your enginebay a cool look, Has some gains I have been told. The one downfall is being metal it absorbs the heat. But allows air to travel quicker down the piping to the throttlebody. This can be sourced from you local exhaust shop normally for around $150 mark for 3" piping.

With a combination of all of the above 3, you can gain a few extra Kw here and there but allows you to get more air to your engine, when you choose to update your cam.

Just a final note on filters....
Your choice of filter is very important. Your engine will be breathing through this and cheap pod filter isnt going to give the results of the more expencive pod filter. It will most likely not last as long aswell. So the $20 cheapie pod filter isnt going to do you much good compaired to the K&N $110 POD filter.

You can also replace your paper style filter in your airbox with a K&N, BMC or FinerFilter oil filter. Noticeable gains have been seen by doing this. John_xr6's ED gained 3 rwkw on the dyno run by installing a K&N filter. But it can vary from car to car.

Tickford Snorkle is obsolete at ford dealers...
i guess i should start calling some wreckers, what would my chances be?
who would be the mostly likely to have one.

Just spoke to Autobarn on the phone in regards to pods,
He advised me to steer clear from pods cause it will screw with your intake and bite you on the arse.
Being a Newb i reply with " ahhh yeah"
Can someone kindly explain?

Quite simply the guy at auto barn should be working at the reject shop.

As long as your pod is boxed or away from the motor, and the pod is big enough, it wont adversely effect anything.
with the BA snorkel it sits slightly further back - like a cm, so you need to drill 2 new holes for the screws. 2 mins work tops to install it, and its prolly 50% larger than stock.

That's a pretty open ended question. What are you looking for? How much power? What sort of budget? What sort of driving are you going to be doing in it?

Air intake mods aren't the be all and end all on a standard E-Series. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between no snorkel and an EL GT one.

The AU XR snorkel fits I6's, I think only one screw hole lines up, which is no biggie. The power steering pulley rubs the AU XR/BA snorkel on E-Series V8s, so you either need to find an EL GT type unit or get an AU XR/BA snorkel then heat/bend a small indent where the power steering pulley would hit.

With a pod filter that is close enough, it will clamp down to 70mm.

LOL can a pod make that much of a difference where you can notice a power gain??

Go get your car dynoed with your old intake system (panel filter & airbox) and then dynoed with the K&N pod fitted. I'll bet you'll find next to no power difference.

LOL @ "feeling the difference" with a just a pod. You need to have a significant power increase (like 20kw or more) to "feel the difference" in your car's power output. Or a significant driveline change like a manual conversion or shorter diff gears. Or replacing a blocked & collapsed cat... As for "feeling the difference" off the line, that'd be low-rpm stuff wouldn't it... Yep that high-flow pod filter definitely makes the car launch better at 2000rpm :?

onLiA6, have alook around the gallery forum, all the cars with steel piping instead of the stock ford plastic B/S, is what your looking for

I reckon a pod makes a difference. Why else would people get them :?:
If not even for performance, then for induction noise uleh :!:

i agree i did it no way you can feel it not off the line nor top in of the revs best mod for your bucks 4.11 diff what first gear lol
only do the pod for looks not for power gain

ps commando how do i know when my cats fuked

Gerendasi - I'll go with Aaron's answer.

When it meows funny. (srsly though, when your car is significantly down on power, has a "rattly" sound from the exhaust, has difficulty revving, etc)

pretty sure i didnt say get a pod instead of a supercharger.
i said i could feel a difference.
not a MASIVE gain a difference lol
going around corners its and giving it boots i can feel a big difference.
make fun all you want tho lol

have you redirected the pod to at least suck cold air?
If it is where the old box used to be then i doubt you have found any gain. Its probly just a mental thing like with the electric superchargers and placebo's if you think it is going to work then you will notice it.

nah its still in the same place, maybe it is a placebo effect:(

3 lines, 1 big contradiction :)

You're just imagining it, simple as that. A pod alone on an otherwise stock engine simply will not allow you to "feel a big difference". Wolf's on the money with the placebo effect suggestion.

The upside to all this is you'll be pretty excited when you do something to the car that actually DOES make a decent power difference, (or changes to the driveline as previously mentioned), you'll be grinning from ear to ear :D

thebeast - maybe you should disconnect your BBM and lock the butterflies open, the car will feel like it has a lot more top end power :P

Only reason I chucked one on mine. No difference whatsoever other than being more sluggish in heavy traffic, and a bit more noise which was the intention.
