That motor's probably been on gas, so not much filth slinging around in the oil to dirty up the rocker gear and shit.

Looks good though, it's clean on the outside too.

I have changed the PCV valve and the valve stem seals, and it does use oil still. Its a mixture of leaky front main seal and worn piston rings. It only burns oil when its cold, but it drops a fair bit whenever its parked.

I've got no evidence of it being on gas, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was. The EB engine I pulled apart was on gas, and it was filthy, but it had done twice the k's of this EL motor.

Don't know about the head change, you would think if it was a tickford engine they would reco the ticky head. Who knows though... part of the gamble with a wrecker engine!
Interestingly, my ED is a 94 build and also has a 94AB cylinder head.

Minor update:

I've been collecting bits and pieces for the new motor, so far I've got some thermos, new bosch alternator, new power steering pump, new powerbond harmonic balancer & a ford air con delete arm and pully to replace the air con compressor.
I've never had working air con in this thing, so I won't miss it much. Perhaps once summer hits i'll get sick of it and do something about it.

Still to come is a clutch kit and flywheel, and other minor crap like radiator hoses and EL intake piping.

In the mean time I've pulled the BBM apart and polished up the top half. Its not 100% perfect, but its good enough for me!

Next to be polished is the rocker cover, fuel rail, throttle body & thermostat housing.

Finally finished the rocker cover... Stripping the paint back was a major pain in the arse, but it came up ok in the end.

That's a really neat ED you've got there, I like it. Very clean and straight (unlike 99.9% of them). Good stuff!

Thanks guys, appreciate it!

Got this thing finished off tonight. Had some trouble getting it started, although it helps when you get the fuel lines connected the right way around :glare:
Also, two of the injectors were stuffed... Put them on our injector testing rig and found cylinder 4 & 6 weren't firing at all, so we eventually decided to replace the whole lot with the old motor's injectors, and she fired straight up.

I'll track down a couple of other EL injectors later on and swap them over again.

Anyway, the finished result:

She goes much better now, although there still are a few minor things to fix up. The BBM doesn't switch yet, as we still have to make up a frequency switch, the oil pressure sender needs to be swapped over for the ED's one, and the temp gauge doesn't read anything, so the thermostat housing will be drilled and tapped for the sensor tomorrow.
The revs hang a little bit on gear change due to the Idle control solenoid which is annoying, and it doesn't really compression brake anymore... I'll just have to figure that out later.

New clutch is awesome! Its just a standard PBR, but it shits all over the worn out thing that was in it!

Also, we discovered that at some stage in its past, someone had fitted an eBay +20hp resistor mod into the intake manifold air temp sensor... no wonder it ran rich

your old injectors are identical to stock EL units so there is no point changing them

BBM switching, since it an ED and already has smartlock just throw a EL ECU in there and hook up the BBM Vac switch... its only 2 wires and will switch as per factory

the temp gauge issue, just throw your ED lower thermostat housing on there as it has the 3 sensors and will fit the all the other parts that bolt to it

Actually we calculated the flow rates of each injector type; ED is about 18lb/hour and EL was around 19.5lb/hour... Not that it really bothers me, as this thing will hardly ever see 100% injector duty cycle.

I was going to try and find an EL manual ECU and do just that, or alternatively a standard EL ECU+J3. I pulled all the BBM vac stuff off an EL at the wreckers yesterday, so I'll fit all that up later. It runs fine at the moment without the switching.

I didn't know the lower housing was interchangeable, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for that :good:

Allen, I've got the EA lower thermostat housing on my EL engine so they definitely fit. The ED's looking good though!

Thanks for the tip guys, I changed it over this afternoon and it works like a charm!

Can anyone tell me if the oil pressure sender out of the ED engine is a direct fit into the EL engine block? I can't be bothered getting under there and swapping them only to find it won't work.

Well, this thing is now Farked...

Went camping this weekend, and a mate reversed his Hilux into it and put a towbar shaped hole in the radiator. Bumper, bonnet headlights/indicators & radiator support panel are all smashed.
And to top it off, because it happened in the middle of nowhere during a massive rainstorm I had no choice but to limp it to the nearest town... Motor is proberly farked too now, as its misfiring, running rich, stalling & blowing black smoke out the exhaust.

Now I gotta deal with my mates insurance to get the fucker fixed or (hopefully :P ) paid out as a wreck.

Pics tomorrow!

I got a quote for the repairs to this thing today... $4k for bodywork alone, not including a radiator or any potential engine damage.

It may not look like a lot of damage, and to be honest if I were fixing it myself it would cost a couple of hundred bucks tops! But I wasn't at fault so I don't give a shit what it costs.
Image

The good news, is that I reckon the reason it was running rough was moisture in the dizzy, due to the radiator blowing coolent all over the place. I whacked another radiator in it to drive it to the panel beaters, and it ran perfectly... So thats one less thing to worry about.

Spewing about the damage. It's very similar to when I had my Black Spur "incident". The damage looked extremely minor, but the rad support was bent, fan seized against the radiator, etc. It doesn't take much to bend the rad supports. Best of luck with the repairs.
