Longer the shaft the harder it is to balance tho. I doubt many old school cars need a shaft as long as a BA

I've seen a ZD Fairlane run 8's with a one piece shaft.. they're a decent length. They are fine if done properly

A tailshaft doesnt need to be out of balance to have a vibration. It can be to do with alignment. The rubber couplings on the front are designed to run true. The CV's are meant to be running in the middle of their plunge, as if they don't, it will destroy the CV.

This was a single piece tailshaft fitted to a Commodore in Vic. It let go on the dyno, and made a mess of the car. We then supplied a box, 2 piece shaft and new diff. All these parts needed to be replaced. The floor was farked. (also, we didnt supply the single piece shaft)

IRS cars are worse for exploding tailshafts, as they get a harmonic through the tube as you have a fixed gearbox and diff. Live axle's don't have this problem, however tube over a shorter length has far greater torsional strength over a longer tube. To get the same strength, you need to go much larger, and up the wall thickness of the tube.

4-link and single piece thick wall shaft, problem solvered.

mine is a thick wall 3.5" shaft, but being just under 1600mm long (uni to uni), i think they are to long, and i fear it like the world ending breaking down the strip or at speed.

I don't mean to be a smart arse Paul, but in the 3-4 years you've been working at Mal wood and you have seen one broken tail shaft? What's to say it wasn't made properly?

Also, the part about bad harmonics, AUs with IRS have single piece shafts.

There is nothing wrong with a single piece tail shaft, go ask hiboost when he crosses the line at 150mph if he's worried about his tailshaft.

I have only ever (including drag cars) seen one tailshaft pop, and that was an ED falcon with an unknown condition tailshaft on the dyno.

The go is a centre bearing from an F-truck apparently. Then again, V8SC's run a one piece shaft last time I looked ($11ty carbon fibre job tho)

No offence taken.. :) actually that was just one broken shaft that we physically had sent to us... We have had quite a few people ring up with problems when going from a 2 piece to a single. There was 3 in a 2 weeks period at one stage.

Yes AU's have IRS and a single piece, and no issues really... In saying that we have fitted quite a few 2 piece shafts in the sedans and utes. When Mal fitted a T56 in his AU XR8 years ago he had issues with a vibration, tired everything to keep the single piece... Fitted a 2 piece and vibration gone.

The 2 piece shaft in my work ute (VE-SSV) was made using XR6T parts, has never been balanced, and at 224km/h it has no vibes.

Also, I'm pretty sure the V8SC's use 2 piece shafts, as the guy we get to balance out tailshaft a builds the shafts for Triple 8.

You can use an F series centre bearing, however I am pretty sure you will need to change from a rubber coupling at the front to a uni joint.
