well i think the easiest way to tell if they are fucked... if you can push them closed really easy they are collapsed. you shouldnt by hand really be able to make them move.. the part on the inside.

sorry my explanation is hazy lol

I bought a new set of lifters today, Hurt my pocket a nice $175 for a full set. I have put em in, followed Dave's tutorial and a few calls to Kev(Schmee) and Josh(burnt turtle) the car now lives.

I thought all hope was lost but now it's all fixed I am in an ecstatic mood, cruising awaits, especially Eildon.

with fixing anything mechanically biggest trick.

right torque settings.
remember or take a picture of what ya removed.
remember different bolt sizes and lengths and were they went.
double checking is never a bad thing.
20mins - 10hours. doesnt matter aslong as its done and its done right. :)

when i do anything in mechanic wise i can tell you were everything goes and went and roughly what torque stuff should be set at.

thats also years of experience :)

good work bro. ;) abit of faith in ya self and you got it done :)

+1 on clear idicators ;)

Everyone thinks i should get clear indicators, personally if there on standard lights i dont believe in them, they dont look right. I am getting an XR front soon and that will obviously have clears.

Lol does a ratchet count as a torque device :P

When I done the cam in my car, I just done everything up as tight as I could or till it felt like it was going to strip itself. Never had any trouble with doing that on the old motor.... Although when we done the head in the EA we did use a torque wrench.

ratchet is a torque wrench...

1/4 drive for around 20 nm
3/8 drive for around 40 nm
1/2 drive for around 60 nm

1/2 drive with a long pole = 120nm :D

haha

not soo true... i had my sidchrome 6 inch ratchet do up 120nm on head bolts and that was only "nipping" them up to me... i guess it depends how strong you are.

After some inspiration from the thread Sunny put up with the history of his cars, i thought I might make a post with where my car has come from to what it is now.

The Sale Listing: These were the pics from the ad for my car which was on carsguide.com.au. Guy only put 2 pictures up. The guy thought the auto was fucked and I got the car unreg and no RWC for $1350.
Image
Image

The Day I got it home: First pic I ever took of it.
Image

Next Day: Me being overhyped that I got a car, i took a dozen of pictures.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Then the cat found that there was something new:
Image

2 weeks had passed and the car was finally rego'ed, me and my mates had to celebrate:
Image

Next came the weekend and I gave it a good wash and went to pick up the boot garnish i bought off LOW-XR:
Image
Before:
Image
After:
Image

I then tried to rig up my trip computer, my original one was out of an NA Fairlane, hence the silver:
Image

Time to get rid of the stock standard GLi seats, in go the Recaro's, I got these off of John_LS1:
Image
Image

Then after the Phillip Island cruise, I noticed Terry's car was an XR but had the fairmont style rear garnish, so within A few days I made a trade with MarkTD for my XR one and I got his Fairmont one:
Image

I have always said I am gonna put an XR front on, I was very close at one stage but found out that individual parts for the XR front are rare:
Image

Until I took it to Kev's there was a long gap in doing mods, I hadn't done much besides put on the XR/S-Pack style moulds, oh god that ride height is awful :P:
Image

And then of course, with my tax refund came these :P:
Image

Next it was at Kev's being pulled apart to become what it is today:
Image
Image

3 Month Gap and when I arrive I see this, car was all ready and Kev was just giving it a clean, it was fairly dirty:
Image

Moulds were still off as they were getting sprayed by Mark (Bomber):
Image
Image
Image

And here is how the interior and car stands today:

hey kyle... loving the car as it stands...

got a sujestion.. instead of clear front indicators why not make up some vinyl to throw over them in colour code with thin horizontal cutouts so you can see the indicator. there is a black XR with it done and it looks hot as... would definately be different and more sleek i rekon

was about 6:30 7ish, I see you all the time actually, your plates stand out well, last time it was on police road. Yeah my car needs another wash, the red stripes do my head in, I have to touch them every couple of days.

A bit of an update, the car is currently getting it's head gasket changed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for sometime today, but most likely tomorrow. I will get pics when it is complete.

a headgasket should only take a few hours to do max, unless you sent the head off to be shaved. i normally have a spare head so i make sure the spare is good and clean then do a quick swap over. normally 2-3 hours.
