I'll chuck the cam in it.

Other than that, it's mostly redoing all the suspension, and just driving it. In the distant future, I want to do an engine swap, respray, and all that shit but that could be a long time away.

Yeah, I'd keep it silver. I don't want to do engine bay, door jams and that shit and to have them a different colour would piss me off. It's just with my stone chipped front, keyed passenger side, mismatched front right guard, all the pressure pack stuff, as well as 19 years of wear and tear, I'd really like fresh paint again.

Update: As a lot of people have seen, my car hates power steering belts, and has thrown quite a few of them. I had enough and bought a full serpentine setup (well, actually 2 of them). Using the best bits from both, I started the conversion today. I removed all the old 3-belt accessories.

Started with this (I've been missing the aircon belt for about the past year)
Image

Replacing the aircon condensor too, as it leaked all the gas out
Image

Removed most of the accessories
Image

All the remaining parts removed. I actually gave it a basic degrease afterwards and will be doing more tomorrow. I'm also taking the opportunity to replace the front crank seal as it's the cause of all that oil.
Image

I've also got a new rocker cover to put on. It should look a lot nicer than the current one
Image

If you're wondering why I'm not doing an engine swap, I'm very happy with how it's running. It's not giving me any trouble, it still has plenty of performance for what is essentially a stock 3.9 so it's in too good shape to just send to the wreckers. I'm running it into the ground. I also don't have the time or the space to be attempting an engine swap, and don't have a backup car (I don't live with my parents so I can't just use their cars)

I've also copied Commando by fitting these a while back.

Cheers guys. I bolted it back together again today and first impressions are awesome. The steering feels nicer, the more powerful alternator copes better with the thermos, I did notice a very minor performance increase, hopefully it no longer leaks oil, and my days of throwing power steering belts appear to be over!

Anyway here's a photo of the new setup.

Cheers. They're out of a U13 Nissan Bluebird (the 90s rounded one). They were easy enough to fit too.

I didn't bother as you have to drop the sump. I had to grind a bit off the alternator bracket though as the front didn't sit flush against the EA timing case. I've worked out late EBII and EDs don't seem to have this problem and seem to bolt straight up. It's definitely a worthwhile mod, and considering you've done BBM, you won't need to worry about getting an XH tensioner. The full EL system should bolt straight up to yours

And Bentley, one day I might go turbo, but only when I get a second car!

instead of 1 belt out of 2 slipping off\snapping. theres only 1 now and when that slips it stops everything lol

what type of paint did you use to paint the rockercover anyway? im thinking of getting one powdercoated for mine cos i cbf'd doing it myself.

i know.. but the option of getting it powdercoated sounds better and wont chip or fade as easily.

you want lazy? the bendix on the startermotor has been sticking and its been like that for the last 3 thousand k's. it only does it intermittently though

Thanks everyone. I'm rapt with how it's going. I had an issue with the water pump not sealing up properly, but Kev fixed it for me today. I'll have to grab a photo of the old waterpump as it's unbelievable how good condition it is for it's age!

travs ea-xr6 wrote:looks tops.

I didn't touch them :P. I guess I can put a small line on the harmonic balancer if need be, but I've had no need to modify the timing.

I just used VHT high temp paint (ozecruisers.com.au - getting in before Dan :P), sanded back the ribs then clear coated it. To fit it, I'll have to file the top corners on the head slightly, use the EF gasket, and use the AU bolts.

Amazing what a decent rocker cover can do to an engine bay!

I had Kev help me out with the fitting it as I'm sick of seeing oil seeping from rocker covers. I just need to respray the brake booster, change the leads, and just give it a general cleanup in a few other areas and the old 3.9litre will be looking as good as it runs!

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it! It's at nearly 290,000kms and besides a bit of lifter rattle on startup, it's in great shape.
