I am so mad.

I picked up a second hand CAPA flash tune off a guy yesterday, and decided to plug it in and flash it to the generic 10psi tune this morning before work..

Everything was going great, and the car was running so good! about 15 mins into the drive i was on boost at about 4600rpm i heard a huge bang, lost power and the oil light came on! I shat my pants and pulled over, only to find this on the side of my block under the turbo....

Image

This is the sump....

Image

What the hell can i do??? It looks like it was running lean, and the rod has shot through the block. I didn't hear any pinging?

Do FTG Auto salvage do XR6T motors?

Fark!@#@$# :(

Hey guys,

Picked the car up from Mick @ Pit Lane Automotive this afternoon after a custom tune...

All I've done to the car from when i bought it stock is...

- NGK Iridium 0.8mm plugs
- Typhoon lower airbox and intake
- BMC panel filter
- New fuel filter
- 82 degree high flow Tridon thermostat
- Engine Oil change with Shell fully synthetic/T56 Gearbox oil change with Mainlube Solid Boundary gear oil/Diff oil change with Penrite LS90
- Alloy CSC
- Cleaned out the throttle body
- Added a Turbosmart Dual Port 25mm BOV (and set the pressure to dose at ~2psi, and make the psschh noise at 4-5psi)
- Wired up tripod gauges with Boost (working)/Oil Pressure (working)/AFR gauge (not working)
- Have been running it on BP ultimate 98 since I purchased it a month ago..

I was very happy at the results!

Max power: 273.1rwkw @ 140kph @ ~10psi (12psi most of the way through the rev range, but needed to taper the boost off at higher rpm due to stock injectors..)

Stock it made 201.8rwkw @ 156kph

To say the least, I am blown away! Mick did everything i wanted, and more. I am so bloody upset it is raining, as i couldn't stretch its legs at all on the way home! Just wheel spinned and traction controlled everywhere! haha. Rain for the next 3 days too! But I'm too happy about the tune today to let it worry me. Plenty of time to give it a real go soon enough..

All in all the car went really well. There weren't any major dramas with the setup, but that my injectors were letting me down. They are running pretty flat out at this power right now, and probably would have made close to 290rwkw with a set of injectors and we could have let the boost keep going and not backed it off top end. But then you start running into valve spring issues, clutch issues, etc....

Anyway, here are the graphs :)

Image

Image

Big big thanks to Mick at Pit Lane. What a champion! :drinks2:

Cheers,
Christiaan

i'll have to drive it in the dry to comment on the clutch.

around 3k for everything to get it to this stage (that includes an unfortunate and expensive mishap at G & D that i won't talk about on here)

Dan, i was super impressed with Mick. You should see this guys workshop. Cleanest, tidiest, most efficient workshop ever.

I took the car to G & D to get the clutch bled, and they snapped the bleed nipple off. Charged me for labour and a new alloy CSC. Labour was $110 an hour...... For people who know the VACC guidelines for how long it takes to remove and refit a gearbox in an XR6T will know how much the cost blew out. + $260 for the CSC. :banghead:

believe me, i tried. apparently if it falls apart in their hands undo-ing it, it's not their fault. but if they broke it tightening it, it is.

so yeah, live and learn. couldn't get out of it otherwise i wouldn't have got my keys back i don't think ..

anyway, super happy with the power. it's insanely different from stock. once it hits boost, shit gets scary in the wet.

rain rain go away...

I've spoken to a couple of mechanics, and they're all kind of in agreeance to what G & D said.. Anyway, G & D were good and knocked an hour off the labour charge (but i had to get a taxi back to work from G & D, then one back to pick it up) so it didn't really make a difference..

I was going to get G & D to do everything, but after that mishap, thought i'd better not...

Does it axle tramp hard in the wet?

My BF did. The BA is lowered and it doesn't.

The BF sounded like it'd throw the diff cradle through the rear floor every time it got wheel spin in the wet.

hey guys,

yeah 273rwkw on stock everything, only mods are a typhoon lower intake, and bmc filter.. There was a run there when it leaned out, where it made 289rwkw.. obviously Mick pulled the boost and timing back top end to ensure everything was running good top end, and it brought it back down to 273.

The injectors are running at something like 96 - 98% duty cycle at full power. still fine, just maxxing out almost. Mick said to keep an ear out for pinging if i get a bad batch of fuel, but no pinging at all yet.. The manual certainly is a lot of fun, but its not fun to be changing clutches once you get more power.. I love manuals so much, but im kind of wishing i got a ZF auto now. clutches are expensive, and mines slipping in 4th and 5th a little bit now, so a new one is on the agenda shortly. Probably go a mal wood option 3.

The car really moves now, it's amazing how much more power it has. I'd recommend a tune as one of the first things you do to really liven these cars up. :drinks2:

Probably go a mal wood option 3.

The car really moves now, it's amazing how much more power it has. I'd recommend a tune as one of the first things you do to really liven these cars up. :drinks2:

Ask Rollin what clutch he has, all i know is it is a Mal Wood twinplate that can cop a lot of abuse

Re: Uhuh, XR6T for Yagz as well...

Jack, thanks mate. I guess i got lucky with mine, everything is tight. My gearbox is running a gear oil specially formulated for the T56 by a company called mainlube, and the changes are still a bit notchy. The guy reckons 3 - 5% of the T56's that his oil goes into experience the extra notchiness, because they are a tight box, and the sliding areas are still good... It should sort itself out by me driving it for a few months.
How does your car go with the LS1 edit? Did they do a full custom tune? Is it the same as a Xcal flash tuner?

67rce, I will be getting the same clutch as low_xr, it's a single plate Option 3 clutch. it should hold around 400rwkw (only rated to 340rwkw, but mal always under rates his clutches by a lot to allow for tolerances). He has a guy with a 410rwkw ute running his option 3 clutch, and no dramas yet apparently. He makes a good clutch.

Yeah, it's an excedy clutch plate, but overall it's his design i think?

low_xr, he mentioned some things on another forum about the option 3 and option 3 plus.

Here is what he said:

"A company in SA called LMG has an XR6T and they told me a week or two ago that they are now running 430 rwkw with an option 3 and it has been in the ute for over two years, that really amazed me and that convinces me that when it comes to holding capability it all comes down to how the car is driven.
I still only rate them to 370 rwkw, this seems to be quite comfortable with this clutch but it all comes down to how the car is driven.
Regards, Mal "

The option 3 plus has 30% more clamping pressure and will obviously hold more power. I guess you could run 450rwkw through the option 3 plus as long as you were nice to it... judging by the under rated figures from mal.

Custom oil is good , otherwise I would recommend Castrol Transmax Z fully synthetic.

My VT was tuned by the previous owner so unfortunately I don't know the details, but the tune and air intake mod gained 20% rwkw on the day. Still, it's only around 192 rwkw now, so the next step would be an exhaust system...

Anyways, hope to catch your beast at a cruise some time.
