Well my current economy is 400kms to a tank with roughly 80% back roads to and from work, and a touch on the freeway. I haven't taken it ona huge trip yet, so don't know what it would get on the open road. The furthest I have gone so far is 280kms on half a tank on the freeway.
I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't think it would be this terrible! I mean, I was getting 500kms a tank around town out of the grandpa EL! Ah well, I'll just chuck a big exhaust on it and enjoy the sound, and try not to think about premuim being $2 a litre!!

So you're getting 15-16l per 100km out of a 10 year old V8 and crying about it?

Yeah Max, cammed. 450 is sick, my bolt on/tune only VX R8 would do 18-20l avg, but again all stop start, so I thought that was pretty reasonable.

None of the B-Series I had returned less than 450km a tank, and I was stoked with them. Anyone who knows where I live would know that my fuel economy would suffer 1-2L /100km just because of my location, so 450 was pretty good. It's hard to gauge whether fuel economy is decent without taking in to account 10 billion factors; how you drive, where you live, what you use the car for (peak hour commute on 60km/h roads, off peak commute on highways) and all that kind of shit.

Having said that, Gill you don't go anywhere in peak hour because you're never awake, and you're one turn off main roads with speeds of 70-80 clicks an hour, and your work and uni is a 20 min drive each way pretty much only on Cbury Road. So no wonder you're going to get immaculate figures.

I got 290 kays in the VY R8. Fucking balls.

LOL, gees, I feel better already!! I never knew how bad V8 economy was, but going by the overwhelming response, I am not doing so bad! I guess the only real way I am going to get better economy is to lose two cylinders. Appreciate the input all.

Damn Sunny, that is hella bad bloke! I though the VE I had was terrible, getting 350kms to a 75L tank, but I think you win!

Ev every car will have its downfalls.. you need to learn to live with them! + Harden the **** up! Lol.

Have you tried adjusting your driving style for a tank of fuel? My old man has an AU xr8 ute 185kw, driving it to work and back everyday (mixed driving) it gets 13l per 100. He doesn't thrash it like i would but he's not an old grandpa driver either!

Turbo's will get good economy, mine will get 600odd on the freeway but if i did a tank driving how i like to i bet i could do it in 300km.
Forget about economy and boost it already..

Haters always gunna hate! :beee:

You know what, I did actually think about gas at one point, but would only go a good system like SVI or something, and they are hella expensive. I still kinda regret never going to look at that BA Ghia 3V I found before this thing that had SVI already installed. Would have been a decent car still.

I do try tro drive it nicely, but can never seem to keep it up for a whole tank for some reason. :P You know what, if I can manage to do it properly this time and get a tune from someone who actually gives a fvck, I might get better economy with boost!

Let me sort out the exhaust first and freshen up the motor Jase, and then I may just hit you up. Considering how awesome of a job you did with the tune in the grandpa EL, how could I not! :good:

Nice work Anthony! I got my KAAZ for $1250 I think it was, so not much difference really. I guess it depends where you go. I looked at the Harrop unit as well, but after doing some reading around, found that they are more prone to failure than a KAAZ unit. Although apparently they are smoother in their operation. To be honest though, I hardly notice the KAAZ anymore.

I would agree with the consensus here, and sometimes have a tough time explaining to the uninitiated that these cars get excellent economy on the highway, yet terrible in the city.

Newton's first law of motion states that an object travelling at speed will remain at the same speed unless acted upon by an external force. This means that weight is almost completely a non-issue on the highway, in fact if anything it takes decent brakes to slow the car down from that speed. So all you've got is an engine basically idling (around 1500 rpm on the 4 speed VT and the WM), a bit of rolling resistence from the tyres, some wind resistence and that's it.

In city running it's the exact opposite. Constantly shifting nearly 2 tonnes from rest then accelerating to speed using 5 or 6L motors is going to take its toll to say the least. I avoid city driving for this reason as it gets ridiculous, and would rather use PT for those commutes than drive a Prius around all day. Probably cheaper, too.

I also suggest learning driving techniques to get the most from the vehicle. This is a whole topic in itself but the main thing is to minimise stopping. For example, if you know a traffic light ahead will hold you up then ease off the throttle, even hundreds of metres back, and it may be green by the time you get there. This avoids the dreaded 50 L/100km (or whatever) during initial acceleration.

Nice work on the economy Sunny/Gill. I would be wrapped if I got around the same in my XR8. The Classic I6 managed 880kms to a tank up to Sydney though, that was epic!
My XR8 sits at 2200rpm at 100kms/h in fifth with the cruise on, so if I could get more than 750kms on a long trip like that it would be great! Excellent write up Troutman, well put! I am over worrying about the economy now anyway.
The KAAZ is running great now Justin, almost un-noticeable!! Very happy with the decision. Dunno if its just me, but I recon its made the car easier to do stupid shit in too! Much more predicatble even than a stock LSD.

Anyway, gave the thing a wash after god knows how long, so of course had to document it! :P Also took the wing off just for shits, what do we all think?

Agree with Troutman, its all about how you drive it.

Do all of this then report back-

Short shift every gear and let the torque pull the thing around
Coast up to every red light, dont brake just lift
Never give it more than 50% throttle off the lights
Cruise everywhere, never race anyone or get too close to anyone so you dont have to brake or accelerate much
Keep it serviced regularly
Keep all the tyre pressures 40+psi

Most of the time thats how I drive and I always get excellent economy. Other times I just frash the **** cos I'm an impatient bastard :D

Ok, ok, so the wing stays!! To be honest, I kinda liked how different it looked, but anyway. I wish I could find the same spoiler I had on my AUII Futura Classic, that was mint!

Excellent advice from Tufed6 there too! Just one quick one for you though mate. When you say coast up to the lights and lift, should I stay in what ever gear I am in, down shift or go straight to neutral? I normally just take it out of gear and use the brakes.

If you like it, why care what others think?

Just for reference Ev, i just went on a ~700km trip, got 10.0L per hundred and showed a BF XR8 + a VX clubby a thing or 2 on the way  You can't beat turbo's for economy and performance!

I don't care what other people think. In fact, I was going to leave it off, but only put it back because the wing looks better covering the holes in the boot lid than red race tape! :P I recon if I come across a standard red lid I'll grab it.

As for the turbo economy, I'm sure strapping a blower to this bastard will help it almost in the same way!

maybe try doing oxy sensors and shit.
my old au got 680km out of a tank to albury and back and we went for a decent spirited drive up the moutains there to over look some lake.
my brother gets 600km out of most tanks in his au3 xr8 and on the same drive he got 720km and it said he still had 90km left.
cheers josh.
