Well if I am stuck with this thing, I might as well make it better to drive! Being manual may be annoying, but there is no point giving it away just for that! I doubt I will be able to get a replacement already on SVi with whatever I get for this thing, if it sells at all. Plus I have spent a little bit of money on it already, and besides the mixer system, it's not all that bad a car. So unless I get offered something decent (not likely), or I get given a company car, there is really no point selling.

Ev.

Have a think about what spending money on an SVI system will mean... It will mean years behind the 8-ball $-wise. Actually the COST of converting to SVI would probably result in a net difference not dissimilar to selling the XR8 (provided you got good coin for it) and getting an ecoboost from the auctions for bottom dollar.

Every time you hit the loud pedal in an SVI system, it'll flick over to petrol anyway (I'm not familiar with any SVI systems that run on gas full-time).

Live with the mixer system, or find out what exactly its limitation(s) is/are. Or, just stick to farking petrol if you want performance. For the cost of an SVI system (and ignoring any future price hikes in gas), you can buy a hell of a lot of Premium in the meantime and not have any gas issues.

You're tempting me to quit engineering and become your personal banker, I could get quite rich off you and not feel guilty about it.

Negatory, because the contract for the place I will need to be driving to goes through (hopefully!) at eofy. So I will find out then. This is what my boss told me last week.

I wonder what delivers better coin:

1. A company car (involving FBT, salary sacrifice, etc), or
2. A 15yo car on gas where you can claim the kms either directly through work or at tax time.

It's a srs question. Myself for example, when my work involves travel (in one case I did 2x600kms in a week in my own car), I can claim 70c/km for the first 200km of any single trip and then 41c/km for every km over 200. For the case mentioned I received $608 for travelling 1200kms, which in reality cost maybe $100 in gas.

For jobs I can't claim on due to tightass project managers, I just log the kms & claim these at tax time. (I don't double-dip though, I keep claimed/unclaimed kms distinct).

Ev, if you get a $/km reimbursement through your work for driving your own car, it might be quite lucrative to keep the XR8 (and drive it on LPG - no need to limiter-bash on PULP when driving for your work).

I do currently claim $0.72 per km travelled, no matter how far, but that is only for work trips. Obviously driving to and from the office every day is not claimed. I don't know which way my boss would go with a car, be it salary sac or he just buys me something. I will have to talk to him first. But either way I have been told that a company car is worth $15k a year. Driving this car on pulp would be worth like $6k max. How does a company car normally work? Would he buy me the car and I pay fuel? Or is fuel normally included via say a fuel card? I guess I will have to ask him if it comes to that.

"Worth $15k/yr".

I do >50,000kms/yr on gas, paying country gas prices & that probably sets me back $5k/yr. You have an AU, worth "$6k" in your own words. There is nofuckenway you have $10k PER YEAR in loan repayments to make.

Do you even math?

Salary sacrificing good new cars or getting them chucked into your package is only good if you were going to spend the coin on that car anyway imo.

You won't be saving anything over keeping the XR8. You might save a little compared to buying that same car outright out of your after tax income.

My car was $6k 3 years ago. Its been serviced once.

Total cost excluding fuel in 3 years is $6150.

Spend some time in a slow car and stay away from the forum and you will come to like cheap reliability and spare cash to burn in other places.

You're right there. A few mates have cars avail as part of their 'package'.
So they sold their average 10k cars and blew the cash on junk. And then turn around and pay 10-12k out of their wage just to have a new car for bragging rights that does less than 10k per year and sits in a carpark each day.
Then if they quit or get sacked they have nothing. Back to square one! 10k down effectively.

Ev's probably in a different scenario doing klms for work but that other scenario frustrates me.
Do businesses get some sort of throwback or tax break for supplying employees a vehicle? I know both their bosses were pushing it fairly hard.

I'm just going on what people have told me. I guess I should have said that I was told a company car is 'as good as' a $15k raise. I have no idea if that is actually true. Anyway, someone also said that if my boss buys me a ute, not only can he claim interest on the repayments, but because it is a commercial vehicle it is exempt of gst? Basically he can write off the entire thing? I don't know how this stuff works. Anyway, any company car is going to be better than what I have now I recon. That way I can sell this and be debt free.

Our company cars cost around 12-14k a year, including fuel.

35k for car (replaced every 4 years) and around 4-5k in fuel/running costs/rego a year.

Some cars are more expensive and some cars we keep for longer, but that's just an average.

I'm not even going to bother to give advice to Ev because it's like talking to a ham sandwich- without the ham.

Its funny because Ev does the opposite to what everyone tells him to do... :good:

'As good as a 15k rise' then take a pay rise and pay off your 6k debt with it, then spend the rest on crack or gas systems or whatever.

Seems like you need to understand what a compromise is..

I have plenty of ham, thank you very much!

The car would be worth $15k to me, but not to my boss. It would be a lot cheaper for him to buy me a car than give me a raise! Especially if he buys me a ute on business finance or whatever! At no point have I been offered a raise anyway, so I don't really have a choice. As I've said, this is all speculation until I get an answer!

So it's been running fine on gas again at the moment, getting about 300kms to a tank. Just gunna leave it as is and try not thrash it, slow as anyway! :P

Just dropped another five-hundy on this thing today. New battery and brand new alternator. Dash light came on and voltage dropped to almost nothing on the way back from a client this morning, didn't even make it into the office. So extra long weekend for me of sorts, too bad I spent all day waiting for the new alternator to arrive! :P

Thanks man, this is true. That sounds like a horrible situation you guys were in. Being stuck with Holmsy for the weekend must have been a nightmare!

Are brand new alternators supposed to be noisy as fark, or have I just been ripped again? It sounds like the Raptor on my old car! Nice to have flash backs, but no power to back up the noise though! :P

It's working absolutely fine thogh. I have full charge on the battery, the dial on the dash is always full now, and everything in the car is working as it should. It's just loud. I pulled up at my mates place on the weekend, and he got sad at me because he thought I'd gone and wasted more money on another supercharger! Maybe it just needs time to wear in or something?

Edit: I just called the place I got it from, and of course they blamed me/my car! "Maybe you installed it wrong? It's probably your idler pulley" :banghead:

Take the Fkn alternator back if it's noisey.

Just because it charges doesn't mean the new bearings are shagged.

Typical, it will fail in 3 weeks and you will have a massive sook that you have bad luck...

OK, and as I said to Josh, this would have already happened if I wasn't retarded and gave them my old alternator as a change over!! Besides taking another day off work, which I cannot do with out getting my arse kicked by my boss, how the hell else am I supposed to return an alternator on the only car I have?!? Anyone going to lend me one? Because the dodgy pricks I bought it from aren't exactly going to rush to replace it for free, if at all!

Yes, you are missing the fact that they don't stock them on the shelf. I had to wait 4 hours for them to have it over from their supplier the day I got it. I rang them already and they said they wont do anything until I bring the car over for them to look at.

get something sorted to get the car to them asap, the longer you leave it, the more chance it will do some damage to your car. If the alternators are the same as E-series (I don't think they are) I can send you a known working one to use while you get this shit sorted if you want. Don't have an AU one though. Are they open Saturdays? There will always be a way to sort it out, you just have to find the way to do it.
