A lot of people told me that my car has convinced them to get an AU, which is really good because they are a great car. Definately consider one, they are a bitch to get sitting low though lol. This car has never skipped a beat :) and I am really content with how she looks now!

Yup, they are cars that just keep on going. Well they are hard to get low because (SSL) ultra lows just don't get it low enough, the tyre sits above the guard. Gotta go through compressing springs and such to get it low. Even then you get the bumpstops kicking in. After lowering the car about 5 times now I finally have nailed my height tucking my entire 20 inch tyre with no rub (my guards have been done)

Thought I might drop an update on this thread, only mod I've done in a while is remove my whitewalls ! decided to go for a subtle clean look. I have been building up my XF ghia and is currently getting a lot of work done to the motor(cam etc) but after that is done and my respray goes through on the old girl I have a few more mods I want to do this car

They were fun for a while but now I'm over them :D easier to just clean my wheels every wash and put some tyre shine on instead of cleaning my whitewalls every few days lol.

I've been looking at some sort of way to increase the travel from the rear shocks (my car is on the stops) I have KYB short shocks but the ride is horrible. Any ideas? I think they are short stroke shocks and not short body... I have heard about extending the shock towers but how safe is that? I have tried pedders coilovers and they didn't get the car low, XYZ coilovers maybe?

Extending the shock towers is very common in x series cars, commonly called mega towers. Basically chop them in half and get a pro to weld a length of appropriately sized steel tubing in between the two halfs. Safe as houses if welded properly, obviously not something to DIY if your still fairly noobish with a mig. Once welded get them painted or powder coated to prevent corrosion and your done.

Just need to maintain whatever angle the shock tower had originally obviously.

But I'm not sure if au's run the same style of shock towers?

Is your IRS or solid axle?

theres a car really similar to this in my old street in north dandenong
thought it was the same car for a bit!

you can extend the towers in e-series as well, you just get a second pair and cut them at the base or wherever you want and cut the top off the other pair and weld together.
pretty simple stuff

Nah its not IRS, just built it up with all the ghia bits :) People have been telling me not to do it blah blah blah... I'm running 60mm compressed SSLs so I need some travel. Anybody know a shop who could weld up some shock towers for me? I am inexperienced with a welder.

My shock tower is the same as the E series/x series ones. Is it actually safe assuming the welds are done correctly ?

yeah its fine...
the shock doesn't take the weight of the car remember, it still needs to be strong, but its not taking all the weight.

I often pondered raiding wrecking yards and mass producing these. But anyone with a a grinder and welder can do it.
If you CBF paying two lots of postage and $50 for my time i'd do it. I'm sure someone local can help you out?

I've been asking around but everyone doesn't want to do it as its "risky" and requires an "engineering" cert. Simply going to ask some fabricators to do it. Where abouts were you located I don't mind a day trip !

Fixed my ride quality problem. Inspected everything in the rear and found my bumpstops to be huge... ended up taking them out and the ride is amazing. Soft as anything... Car is actually lower now since it was resting on the stops before... about 10mm, tucks rim lol. Looks good however I think its time to coilover the front to drop it more..

Haven't updated in a while - I have been busy preparing my XF ghia for a respray. Its currently getting done and I expect it back in a few weeks leading to AFD. In addition I've also been doing finishing touches on my XE ghia aswell. 3 cars, girlfriend, full time job and uni keeps me busy!

Now onto the AU - I was so wrapped with the front coilovers I ended up getting rear ones too. They are such a good unit and they are worth every penny. I have them wound all the way down in the rear and the car drives amazing. Front is adjusted so it doesn't scrub, low enough. Very happy overall with the car. I am planning to start putting the turbo conversion in the works in the next few months. Already know what I'm doing and it should be a nice addition to the car.
