My EF XR6 - Exterior For Now…

Ok, so after seeing a few really nice Commodores and Falcons getting around my town with some nice clean stockies on, I’ve been a little obsessed with them! Haha. Even though I’ve got a nice set of 17” rims on my EF XR6, I just love the style of stockies for some reason and I wanted to get a set. I also wanted to give myself a little cheap project to keep me interested as I’m not that mechanically minded and don’t have the cash right now to do any serious modifications.
Anyway, just made this tread to show off my ride and record my very simple little project which will involve trying out different colours, caps, tyres and maybe even widening of these cheap wheels that seem so popular these days and come up with the best combination for my car.

Probably one of my biggest inspirations would have to be Mr_4.0’s beast here viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18350&p=348769&hilit=15x8+wheels#p348769

This is my pride and joy I’ve had since I was 17.

First step – buy some dirty old stockies from the wreckers!

Always wondered what it would look like if someone sanded, polished and cleared the lip on some steelies and painted the centre

Same here, you can go the easy option and get some plastic chrome wheel trims, but I’m not the biggest fan of them. That might be something I try, cheers!

Haha, yeah I just sat it on a go kart wheel in from of my mag to see what it looks like, does look like a 17 inch stockie cos it's closer to the camera! Does look nice with that centre cap, gives me an idea!

Had a quick go last night sanding a bit back and then hitting it with the wire wheel, came up alright, but it’s going to take a while to do and quite hard to do the tight grooves, I need some dremel drill bits…

Would paint stripper be quicker at getting it back to metal?

why strip it?

just wet rub the thing by hand with some 400g papper, etch prime it, then paint it.

I was going to just paint, but as mad_keen said
mad_keen wrote:Always wondered what it would look like if someone sanded, polished and cleared the lip on some steelies and painted the centre

So was just seeing what it would look like, come up a bit shinier than just painting the lip silver, then paint the centre silver or black. Just trying stuff. Cheers

yer...
mask you bare steel lip off, paint inside black. unmask lip. polish lip then seal lip.

you cant keep it just bare metal its only going to rust after the first rain sesh. you need to seal it

So by seal you mean clear coat it?

Finally got the paint off and wire wheeled the lip, looking ok. What should I used to polish? Never really polished metal before.

Autosol metal polish.
Hopfully you can get the scratches out made from the wire wheel

Hit it with lighter and lighter sand paper in the same direction so it looks nice and even.

Thanks guys!

Thinking about getting a set of BfGoodrich tyres from them, they may not suit, but I love the look of them. Maybe someone can photo shop these tyres on the back of my car?

Just trying to class them up a bit! Trying to make them a little different, that’s why I’ve done the polished lip instead of just buying chrome wheel trims.
Wouldn’t mind trying something like this though.

Just a side thought, saw this picture, you couldn’t go passed FTR rims if they where really this big!
Image

I reckon FTR’s are about the best design out there, if they were just a bit bigger, even 17’s I’d have them for sure!

The polished lip looks awesome, but I don't know I've always thought silver stockies were very commodore spec. If it was black the polished lip would stand out more too... But yeah should look good either way man ;)

I was thinking the same.

I’ve only done the one wheel so far, so I think I might do the next one with black centres and see which one I like the best and then do the others. Can more or less see what the black looks like above before I painted silver, but I guess it would look a lot better with a decent paint job. Cheers guys
