hey guys, i just thought i'd make a thread on my latest purchase

i used to own a 5L NC lane, had 19" GT-P wheels, ultra lows, exhaust, momo wood grain wheel etc... looked like this:





any way, i bought a bf xr8, then later a mint DC LTD to throw all the good bits of the NC onto but then lost interest in both so sold the lane to my cousin and the LTD to my old man and kept the xr8.

now i've been saving to buy a house and owing money on the xr8 is not helping so i decided it's time to sell the xr8, pay out the loan and buy something cheaper...

enter the new lane!





it's just a series one, 5 litre, lowered a little on snow flakes.
it's a bit rough and needs a tidy up, which i will do, but am in no rush as saving is more important atm. It is pretty tidy as is, but not great.

i always wanted to put a 5 speed into my old fairlane but never had the money or know how to do it... this is where this new NC is king...



it has a 5 speed out of a 1995 GT HO mustang in it. the old 5L gets moving with one of these compared to the auto.
picked it up this morning and loved it. The old man gave me a lift down in his LTD and on the way home the NC pulled away from it every time at the lights.


plans for it are to throw on the NCF-302 plates when i get it registered, lower it a bit more, find a nice set of wheels that suit it, colour code the door handles, bumpers and body moulds, exhaust, extractors, heads etc (all the usual 5L mods that get them going)
that will all happen very slowly...

I saw that thing for sale in Kilsyth, was almost keen to have a look but then he jacked the price up so I gave it a miss. Still a good pick up bud! Good luck with it.

I remember when I went from auto to the 5 speed in my EB, it was like adding 100hp haha, really livens them up.

I just got quoted $1675 on a set of AFR 165cc heads from VPW, heaps cheaper than $2300 + freight for the TrickFlow 170cc stuff I was looking at. I just gotta get the money in for them now, just gotta check out a few other places first. AFR 185cc heads are the same price too through VPW.

I remember seeing this up for sale. Looked rough but anyone with a bit of time could definitely make it a very nice cruiser

Hus - i would like some GT-P's, it would be a step towards mimicking the old nc...

nstg8a - it wasn't too retro, i'm still pretty used to driving the dc around a bit. getting into an xf would be a massive change from the fg! haha nothing wrong with an xf though, there is always time for a nice car somewhere down the road!!
no idea on wheels, i would love another set of GT-P's but i might go something different... i always wanted a set of NL concorde wheels (the wire ones) on the old nc, so i wouldn't mind them on some ultra lows... like i said earlier, no rush house is more important to me at the moment! having said that, little things will be done along the way, i'm sure!

nut347 - it is a shame i missed out on the eb, it looked pretty good! i'm pretty happy with this though, it's a good starting point and i've always been a fan of fairlanes ever since i was a kid when grandad had a 351 zj. love that this is a manual! it does liven things up, goes so much better than the ltd or old nc ever did! i can always get a lot more out of it too down the track!

djv8t5 - it's a very good place to start, it's heaps of fun! just can't wait to get it registered, i've wanted to drive it all day but can't!!
heads will come eventually, i'll probably just go gt40p's unless something else comes up for a good price...

it's rough in a couple of places but it will come up very well. lol i'm not after a show car at this point in my life

I've finally started working on boosting the fairmont in the form of a s363 turbo so if shit gets serious fast the t3 heads and trickflow intake may come up for sale sooner rather then later ill let you know.

so a question for e-series guru's...

how would i go about fitting 20" wheels with 245/30 tyres on?
they are au offset so obviously i will need spacers...

i'm guessing they wont easily fit because i had troubles with the 19's i had on the old one.

i'm only asking because i might sell the xr8 with the original wheels and put the 20's on the nc...

otherwise i might go the 18's with spacers if i don't sell the car with them included...

The tyres tend to foul in the upper ball joint.
Generally 245/30 is too tall

yeah, that's what i tought, i had trouble on the ball joints with the original tyres i had on the gt-p's...
i might give the 20's a miss asell the xr with them on i think!

it's at the mechanics now for a roadworthy check, i hope there isn't too much!!

so i got a roadworthy check done on monday, all it needs is a few globes, a wheel alignment, new tyres and wash down the engine bay...
it goes back in tomorrow to get done so i should have rego by the weekend! i'm pretty happy with the car overall, by the time it's road worthied and rego'd i will of paid around a total $2,700 for a 5 speed v8. gotta be happy with that.



the things we do for a roady what the hell were ford thinking with the dc wheels? so ugly...

i've decided on wheels too... i'll be putting the 18" bf xr options on that i have in the garage... this leads me to ask, what size spacers do i need? i don't know the first thing about them or where i can get them from etc...

i've also discovered while changing the wheels over that it has king spring super lows in the front and pedders of some sort in the rear.. i think lows as it sits a bit higher in the back, even with the gas tank... i'll track down some king ultras or supers for the rear one day soon (should never old sold my old gear)

eBay generally, roughly $200 for a set. 35mm would be the way to go.

i've looked up the hub adaptors on ebay but i don't think i could find what i was looking for so if someone could link me to the ones i should buy to put bf wheels on, i'd greatly appreciate that!

in a weird way, i'm pretty glad this car is pretty rough... i work at coles and every day there seems to be a new mark or scratch on the bf, it's so shit. People just don't give a shit about other peoples stuff!
with the lane i just wont give a shit. it's got the drive line i want so i'm happy, i will make it look ok too just without doing any panel work! (just a general, cheap tidy up)

35mm spacers or you'll hit. Roll your guards, even if its just the lip with a hammer

nah man, just a few globes, head light, tail light, number plate light, a wheel alignment, steering rack boots, tyres (stole the brand new ones off dads LTD) an engine wash down and a windscreen in the end (they weren't going to do it and first but decided they had to)

pretty good for a 22 year old car... mechanically it's fine, it just looks like shit. lol i'm happy with that though. i'm going to try and teach myself how to paint, i'm going to do front and rear bumpers, door handles and side moulds. should be fun, but won't do it for a while though...

Doesn't look too bad to me, just touch up the bars. White is so easy, could even just spray can them if you used a decent one. The ones Autobarn mix up for $30 or so (Propack or something brand) work very well, could be compared to a basic gun I reckon.

Pretty cool project, judging from your previous this should be good.

Sounds like it was pretty simple job then, definitely pretty small list for the age. Should be fairly easy to touch up the bars, they don't look too bad. Have you thought about EF/L handles and just paint them up instead, that way you have handles til you change decide to them over? Personally I prefer them over the boxcar handles, that is why I am putting them on my wagon and ED.

Looking forwards to seeing how this comes along when you get stuff sorted on it

yeah, that bloke on AFF is a bit of a clown... i have absolutely no doubt that his LTD is mint, but the way he is talking about it is as if it's the ONLY mint one around and it's far better than any other... I'm sure there are others out there better again... i think i'll still take the 5 litre with the moon roof on GAS though thanks haha

i spent the day cleaning the old girl up a bit... gave her a cut and polish and all that jazz, cleaned up the door trims and dash etc....

i'm going to steam clean the seats and carpet soon i think...

i also made a very subtle improvement to the interior...

i think they look good, will just need to track down some series 2 interior plastics. i think the lite grey looks a lot better than the dark...

also, here is the roof after a good cut and polish...



i didn't take a before photo, but it was pretty horrible, but the paint has come up really good underneath. it will look good once i fix up the bars and do the door handles etc...

within the next couple of days i plan on putting the top bit of the grille on, it may prove to be a bit of a challenge to get it all lined up properly and the holes drilled right, i'll be a bit nervous...

i bought some ultra low king springs for the rear of this old girl... i'll give it a go at fitting them tomorrow on my day off. it already has king super lows in the front so i hope it will look ok with this combination and not too commodore spec... if it does though i'll buy some ultras for the front, no biggy...

i'm also going to have a go at fitting the top part of the grille, i have no idea of how to go about it properly but i'll have a go...

i also want to try and have a go at the bumpers... the paint code is "Z"... from what i could find on here, that is stark white, correct?

got some questions on painting... how do i prep it properly? i'm just going to get some cans from repco. how many will i need to do the front and rear bar? how many layers etc?
also, how do i go about painting the moulds?

as you can see i'm very much a noob at all this! i've never attempted any of it! any help will be awesome and i'll be very grateful.
i'm not expecting great results but i'm hoping for something better than tony martin's wagon...

i still haven't done anything about fitting the top part of the grille due to lack of motivation..
i bought some paint and shit to respray the front bar only to realise they are pretty stuffed and have some deep gashes in them so i left them as is for now...

i've done a couple more little mods inside to make it a bit fancier...



thrown on the leather steering wheel from the old mans LTD (that now has the woodgrain momo wheel off the old lane in it) also a leather gear knob from super cheap and a pretty ordinary pioneer head unit... i wanted ipod connection and the old head unit was horrible...


also a couple of exterior mods... i couldn't help myself. i bought this car to spend as little as possible on but couldn't resist. this HAS to be the last thing i do to it for a while...

anyway, ultras are in the rear with a set of pre au 19" gt-p's. just like the old one!







SHOULD stay like this for a while i hope, although i may need new shocks in it. the ride is very bouncy now with the springs and wheels on. i wasn't expecting a smooth ride but the old lane was a million times better and that had ultras up front too. the difference being i had brand new shortened shocks and struts all round...
