hey all, i finally have myself a new car. i'd been searching for a while and almost bought myself a bf2 ghia, but after taking an fg for a spin, i just had to have one.

it's an '09 G6E Turbo in ego with black interior. i picked it up yesterday arvo and i'm pretty wrapped with it so far.

here's some pics

sorry for the crappy old phone photo's, i hope to grab the old mans camera on the weekend and get some decent shots of it.

it's amazing how much car you can get with your money these days...

plans are to lower it a bit all round (has bags in the rear, but i have no idea how they work yet) and put either a set of either the option 19's on it or a set of the force 8/6 wheels. (they're different to the f6 wheels. yeah?)

eventually i'll look into doing the usual turbo mods to get a bit more power out of it.

cheers

Yeah they're beauties, I'm a v8 man all the way through, but couldn't pass on one of these...

He had a caravan that he towed to and from nsw a few times he told me.
I don't know how much towing exactly but the car is in pretty mint condition... It's a one owner with a full service history and he seems like a "no expenses spared" sort of guy. He even put a full tank of petrol in it for me.

It seems a very good car and I have no complaints what so ever at the moment.

Beautiful car mate! I wish i had the money for one of these! Nice score! If it has towed, get an external trans cooler onto it asap. It will save you a lot of trouble later on! ;)

SLY5LT, thanks mate, i'm loving it too! it makes me want to get out of bed in the morning to go to work.

ClassicAU, can you tell me more about this? why should i get one and what are some problems that occur? i thought the zf box was a pretty tough unit...

lil regy, cheers pal, i picked this one up for under 20k. it has 120,000kms on it and is in very good condition for km's.
i feel as if i got a pretty good deal. i think some people around the forums have picked up similar ones for a bit less than mine too.

I want one of these so bad....

All it needs is the optional g6e 19's and lowering. ;)

I wasn't aware these had an external trans cooler as standard, so if that is the case you should be fine.

I know on the B series they had the "milkshake" issue where radiator fluid/water would get into the trans and kill them. It was due to the standard heat exchanger having seals to separate the trans fluid and water fail. Bypassing the heat exchanger/radiator with an external trans cooler supposedly fixed this issue. Not an issue with the trans itself, as you said they are a great unit. Only let down by bad cooling and cost cutting I guess.

I thought all ZF's used the same external water-oil trans cooler block that's separate to the radiator? Did some use actually use the radiator?

It's a little heat exchanger unit that uses radiator fluid, not sure if its actually attached to the radiator itself though. All i know is that they get water in them and an aftermarket cooler stops this.

It's a heat exchanger that is bolted to the side of the block near the left engine mount.

The heater pipes are routed through it, and the auto is cooled from that.

Over time and excess heat (towing) the heat exchanger splits and "milkshakes" the box and destroys them.

Cheap insurance is to remove the heat exchanger completly and add an oil cooler on the front of the car.

The factory heat exchanges for the ZF that are bolted to the side of the bock are known to fail causing failure to the mecanatroinics (spelling?) unit in the ZF when water is mixed in there and the ZF becoming totally stuffed, there are quotes of there of around the 3-4k mark to get it rebuilt.

There are many theory's on why this happens some say it is due to electrolysis and the electronics are trying to ground them selves through the water system and eating through the aluminum of the heat ex-changer, causing the leak and mixing of the ZF fluid and Coolant, Others say it is due to the casting sand getting caught up in the tiny fins of the heat ex-changer and causing it to rot out. There is also talk of vibrations causing the fragile units to fail.

Over on AFF there is a few cases where people have replaced them and only to have them go again in a matter of months. Hence why i believe it is the electrolysis theory as they are known to have poor battery circuits the can cause gremlins and it will eat through aluminum very quickly. I know Bluepower suggest to customers to put a second earth strap from the engines. There was a bit of hype over on AFF about the milkshake problem not long ago and a few company's started making replacement units or alternative systems.

PWR make a replacement system using the same theory of a heat exchange type. It is not placed in the same position but further back toward the ZF, there system is said to heat the ZF to optimum temperature fast and also being a higher quality unit wont cause failure as it is away from he vibrations of the engine. IMO this is just like replacing the stock issue poor design with another.

I chose to replace mine with an independent system that does't connect to the cooling system at all, It has a stand alone Cooler at the front drivers side of the car with a Thermo fan attached to cool if necessary. This system is built by Furious performance who had been putting them on Taxi's for a few years they are a sponsor on AFF and couldn't recommend them any higher. Now there is talk that this system wont heat the auto up quick enough and will cause issues, however I've had this style system on for 4-5 months now and its is exactly the same as it always has been and I don't have that feeling in the back of my mind thinking could it fail and cause a milkshake is it ok?? etc.

This only applys to the 6cyl and the V8's have another style system in the V of the engine block. But again it is still know to fail.

All these systems aren't cheap around the $800 mark, but much cheaper than a trans rebuild. The problem with the Turbo cars is that simply fitting a cooler in front doesn't work as there is no room as the inter-cooler, radiator and condenser are all up front. they have to be fitted in the driver side behind the fog light.

Remember that you need to service the ZF at the same time too that is around the $600 mark and make sure you use genuine ZF lifeguard fluid. Ford want to charge $95 a ltr for this stuff. Also make sure your transmission specialist has done one a few ZF's before are they have a very specific way of checking the level's and servicing.

Here are some (bad) pictures of my set up. I went all out and got braided lines and fittings to match.

Shoot us a PM if you want anymore info.

the engine bay needs a good clean, but other than that, it's near perfect. very good for a car with 125,000k's on it.

i'll be getting the above trans cooler as soon as funds allow. hopefully she'll be all sweet til then :D

cheers

Ridiculous how much car you can get for your money these days (compared to 10 years ago when I got the EL).

Reckon the only thing that'd improve the look are Series 2 headlight clusters.

They sure are, can't beat them for around the 20k mark. im still loving mine.

The series two headlight require some rewiring of the headlight loom and new plugs etc bit of mucking around.

cheers mate, i don't plan on changing anything for a while just yet, but when i do, it will be to make it a bit lower and a set of 19's.
then further down the track some performance mods!

I can't believe how cheap they are too... it's good for me now, but when i want to sell it i'll probably be lucky to get a can of coke for it.

I just lowered the wife's. The King Springs for them are a bit all over with there sizes I put SSL'S in it and I think it sits perfect just legal height. Where if you put ssl's in anything else it would be just about on the bump stops.

that's what i've put in mine......
sits nice & not a pain with normal everyday driving things like speed hump's etc, not to mention that i can get up my drive (not that steep) with no front bar scrape's

Yeah there a good height. But they really should be called superlows. Lucky I did a bit of research before I brought them as I was just going to buy superlows and I wouldn't have been happy with that height.

I had sssl's all round in my bf xr8 and I was surprised with how high it still was (i thought it was perfect in the end)
I had ssl's in my NC and that thing was on the ground lol so I don't know what the go is with the later Ford's,they just don't go as low as you'd expect...

Can anyone give me info on the bags I'd have in the rear? They are inside what looks like standards springs. I let all the air out of them and it dropped the rear by about half an inch from the top pics... (rides smoother now)
When getting new springs, is there anything I'll need to do different or look out for?
Sorry about the dumb questions, I really have no idea about these things...

Cheers

Your bags would probably be towing assist bags for the weight of caravan etc to help keep load level not so much for making it look low

Cheers buddy, I knew they were for towing, but didn't know if they were set up similar to the ones to lower it.
I was wondering if I'd need to get rid of them if I went say king ssl's in the rear.

so a bit of an update...
the car has been great since i've had it, i haven't had a problem at all, which is a nice change from all the cars i've had!

The car was used in my mates wedding and then my brothers wedding in April...

Image

i've racked up a lot of k's in it and i've done a couple of good road trips. (bathurst for the 12 hour, and recently up the great ocean road and through the grampians etc)

Image

Image

anyhow, i'd been keen on getting a new set of wheels for a while and the tyres on the standard 18's were cooked so it was time to upgrade...

Image

Image

Image

these wheels popped up on a facebook group and they were near by and it was exactly what i wanted. I contacted the seller, did a deal for a swap and some cash their way.
I'm very happy with the look and now i just want to lower it a little some time soon. maybe ultra rears and super front.

cheers for looking.
