Thanatos' EAFLCN

A few people have been asking me updated pics of my EA, so I finally got off my backside and took some!

For those that don't know me, I've been around since before the E-series Owners Club even existed (one of the original members) and used to be a very active member until the last couple of years when work, house, etc. started to occupy my time more.

I own a factory 5spd MPI EA2 S pack.
The original 3.9L engine has been rebuilt using ACL race series kit, ported and polished head, Wade cam, etc. etc. etc. The end result is 174.9RWKW on the Dynomotive Dyno in Bayswater.
All the suspension has been replaced with nolathane, upgraded swaybars, sportsryder springs and shocks, etc.
The diff was rebuilt as a 3.45 with 28 spline axles in the EA housing, the transmission was also reco'd at the same time.
Interior is EB1 Fairmont ghia with MANY custom touches.

There's been so many small things changed on this car that I can't even remember it all anymore!!! I'll write up full specs when I get a chance...

Anyway I guess a picture tells a thousand words, so here's the updated pics:

Wow that looks great Dave, been a while since I've seen your car! New rims look pretty cool 8-)

Is that a different scoop? I thought you had a very small/low hornet scoop on there?

This is one of the neatest and tightest EA's I ever got a ride in :) It made my neighbour's kid cry once.

IIRC it's got the old 3.9L head off the original motor from MRDOSE.

Hey Dave, you have one of the nicest EA's around.

Geeze Dave you disappeared off the face of the planet for some time!

It seems like 10 years ago that you drove me home from Geelong when my car died in the arse. I couldn't get over how quick it revved out - it was one of my main inspirations for working on the ED and the main reason why I bought a Unichip [never got around to getting it installed]. Bloody funny seeing Yagz jumping around in his new XR8 only to be mauled by your I6 on the way home!

I have to admit that I liked your old wheels better

Thanks for all the great comments guys!

gerendasi wrote:Many more plans for the beast?

Lately I've just been trying to clean it up a bit more. The paint looks good in photos, but up close it's no where near perfect. There's also a couple of rust bubbles in the usual EA places that I'm going to be cutting out in the next few weeks.

I've also got an EA SVO spoiler sitting there, but everytime I look at it, I can decide whether I think it would look any better than what's on there now. Opinions people????

oneredED wrote:Is that a different scoop? I thought you had a very small/low hornet scoop on there?

Nope that's the same scoop that I always had, it's from a Nissan Patrol. I toyed with putting a hornet scoop on for a while, even went and bought one, but when I sat it in place it just looked all wrong. I don't think hornet scoops are really designed for e-series. So I sold it to EFGiar... :P

TIKFD6 wrote:Mate your car has come a huge way, looks awsome.

Cheers mate! The cam is a Wade 1521a. However, I got them to grind it in 112 phase instead of the usual 114. I was the first one they did this for, but I believe they now offer it in their catalogue like this. I also got them to do a couple of minor other "tweaks" to the profile as well though.
ECU is just a standard EA MPI 5spd ECU with a Unichip. If I had my time again, I would consider going for a full aftermarket ECU, particularly since there are some really good cheap alternatives around these days. Unfortunately, when I put the unichip in, there just wasn't that much else around for cheap.

Sundeep wrote:This is one of the neatest and tightest EA's I ever got a ride in :) It made my neighbour's kid cry once.

Hahaha! I remember that! I took off a bit, ummm, shall we say 'spiritedly', and the poor kid burst into tears!

Yep still got the old MRDOSE head, still going great!

Haha poor Yagz, he kept trying, but could just never win...

Yer sometimes I miss the old wheels too, it looked a bit tougher with those wheels, but I wanted a change. I've still got the old wheels on my EB XR6 daily so I can swap them over whenever I feel like it.

Nice work dave. EA S FTW.

love the seats, but not such a fan of the trim myself. the new rims look grouse though.

put an EL ecu in it and tune it yourself :)

lol Jase... go the white EA S! I wonder whatever happened to Frank (aka madeas)??

Noooo, you don't like the trims!?!?!!? Do you have any idea how many cars lost their trims so that I could piece those together??? lol :P

It took the following in order to build them:
4x EB2 Ghia trims (for the woodgrain and padded armrest)
4x EA2 Ghia trims (for the material to go on the padded armrest)
2x NA Fairlane front trims (required because they are the ONLY trims that are EA vinyl but don't have the cutouts for the window winders (I only have front power windows))
2x EA1 GL rear door trims (required because they are the ONLY trims that are in EA vinyl, with window winders, but without ashtrays)

I was pretty happy with how the seats turned out too, it took 2.5 full sets of seats and 3 days of mixing and matching bolsters and bases, etc. to make a set that was near perfect, but I think (I hope!?) it was worth it in the end...

I though about putting an EL ECU in and getting you to do one of those chips for me, but i'd rather stick to the EA ECU. When are you gonna do chips for earlier e-series?!? :P

Thats a lot of work! I appreciate the effort, but that fabric reminds me of my mums laser ghia a bit too much! The speaker pods, seats and woodgrain look grouse, but its just the fabric that i dont dig. But hey i liked the s-pak cloth trim so who am I to ask? :)

Dont think I will ever work on the older stuff. Getting the EL ecu working was a huge step, which to me negates the need to have to hack another 4 models worth of ECUs, as they are practically pin compatible. To be honest, the hard work in reverse engineering the code was done by a guy in the UK who helped me heaps with this stuff. Now that the definitions are available, anyone who knows how to tune can get TunerPro (free) and with the right hardware do the tuning themself. Being able to disable Smartlock would be a big win, though, as it makes it even easier to whack an EL ECU into an EA/EBI/Early EBII.

edit: btw, you can download the software, definitions and binaries for free and have a play without any of the hardware too.

I can answer that one for you mate! He turned into a ponce and started caring more about shiny electrical gadgets than cars! He now gives me shit for spending too much money on my car! :P He is actually my mate who I was going to buy the EL2 XR8 from! He even still has the bodykit in his garage that he never put onto the EA!

Hi, i just ordered the 1521a with 112 LS and was wondering what kind of idle to expect? Ive got a tunable chip so wont worry me too much, but hoping its gonna be lumpy

Do you have any idle/sound vids floating around on the net?

BTW, what 'tweaks' did you have done to the cam?

It's pretty damn lumpy to be honest, although depending on what type of chip you have, it may be better than mine. I don't think that the idle control of the unichip is as good as some of the other devices around. I don't have any video clips or sound clips, there was an old one floating around ages ago, but not sure what happened to it.

As far as the 'tweaks', to be honest mate it was years ago so I don't remember exactly. I remember they altered the ramp angles, but I believe there was more too it than that, however I can't remember what it was.

Latest update on the car:
It will be in at the panel beaters all next week getting the rust cut out of the dogs-legs, wheel arches and around the windscreen, as well as a general tidy up so she should be near enough to mint once again! :D

A great looking EA you got there. I for one like the interior trim but I'm biased! lol. It's certainly unique with the EAII Ghia armrest but with vinyl and woodgrain! Personally I love the full velour door trims but that still looks surprisingly good. Nice job!

Yup, the car started out as an S-Pack, so it had no power windows. I then fitted the power windows and loom from an EF XR6, which has front only. I custom made the blanking plate in the centre console so that it only has two switches in it. ;-)

Hey dude, i fitted the 1521a (112 LS) and its lumpy as hell.... im running a chip tuned for my previous cam which is letting it idle, but its misfiring & spluttering anything under 3000rpm.... i disconnected the chip and it wouldnt hold idle at all lol

did your cam behave the same way before it was tuned?..... can also smell alot of unburnt fuel @ idle
