If the government took all of the excise off fuel, how will they pay for hospitals, roads, public services, centrelink, schooling (Looking at these forums I think they need a lot more funding for schools), firefighters etc etc?

Driving an E-Series and complaining about petrol prices is fucking retarded. Put it on gas, or get a smaller car. But first, work out how much you pay for petrol, and what 10cpl increase means. It means $6 extra to fill up a 60L tank.

Plus it also, goes along the lines of, if you're that hard down with fuel prices the way they are, then why would anyone go on cruises, etc.
If you can't afford it, you don't do it.

costs me about 80bux to fill the tank (at around 150 a ltr)
and 40bux to fil gas (at around 65c a ltr)

once gas ges around 70c its cheaper to use fuel, i get better milage...

"We use 280 million gallons of gasoline a week in California. Right now the price is at $2.20. Well, a year ago it was $1.20. There's a dollar more a gallon. Somebody is making $280 million dollars more a week this year. It's the same gas, the same pipeline, the same refineries. The profits are outstanding."

Mate they double dip they have their exise on fuel and then tax you on their exise. The govement are greedy fvcks and it goes round in a circle the reserve bank sees us spending more instead of us spending say $65 on fuel we now spending $105 the reserve bank goes oh we are spending more $$$ lets raise interest rates, then oh wait fuel goes up anoth 10c per L we end up spending more and more every one but the dogs up the top get screwed over. If the government had of kept their word scrapped the exise and added their 10% gst every thing would be sweet right now. but nope they put their exise ontop tax you on the fuel and that exise and bang more money for the kents that dont even need it... Good ol economics for ya.

They either need the GST or the excise, not fkn both as Bomber said. You pay $1.65/l - itd be $1.50 if the gst wasnt there (excise only).
Or the other way around; &1.65 - excise - gst = $1.10 + gst = $1.20.

See how much theyre screwing us over yet?

I dont know how theyve gotten away with taxing a tax for soo long now...

Gee, thanks for pointing out the GST on top of the fuel excise, I was not aware of it..... :?

Seriously though, as I said, if the Govt. takes tax off petrol, they lose a lot of money that pays for the things we use every day. I believe the consequences are $12bn per 5cpl. And as I also said, 10cpl is $6 extra for 60L, which Rob pointed out isn't even a JD & coke. I know they're screwing us over, but look at it from their point, losing $12 billion dollars for just 3% off the price of fuel isn't too smart is it? Have a look at the price of oil, I think that's a better indicator on why petrol is expensive.

The Reserve Bank raising interest rates is because of rising inflation, which is not just through oil becoming more expensive. There are a lot of good/bad points about a fluctuating economy. Basically, if you can't afford it, get a better job. They're out there. That's why the economy is going well.

On a slightly different note, is there anyone here old enough to remember the 1940's, early 60's, mid 70's, or the mid 80's? They were pretty rocky times in Australia. I remember The Gulf War in 1990/91 put petrol prices up to over 70cpl (LPG was 15cpl for comparison) and petrol rationing happened for a while.

Nah it's not easy, it's not handed to you on a platter. But with a little bit of study in your own time, and a couple of tickets there's a huge amount of decent paying work out there, mining being one of the first one that comes to mind.

i wasnt refering to me, i mean all the 30-50yo ppl who have stable decent paying jobs for the last 25-30yrs an have now jus been shafted with the rising cost of raising a family
they cant jus quit an go find a better paying job....middle class is slowly becoming lower class

The furthest back that I remember is 1997 when I had my first car and I used to wait until Wednesday to fill up and I used to pay 54c per liter for leaded. Ahh those were the days.

if petrol prices are putting families to the wall, then they're obviously not in 'decent' paying jobs then. A $20 a week rise in petrol which would cover two tanks a week for a family, should not have families against the wall. If it is, they're probably no where near middle class.

Yes other things, groceries, interest rates are going up. But if people were responsible, that still shouldn't hurt as much as it seems to be, for 'some' families.

Whenever petrol went up I'd trim the difference from something else...

Back at uni in the XE/EB... If I paid an extra $5 a week in petrol due to the price going up, I'd get one less takeaway lunch & make/bring sandwiches in instead. Pretty easy to trim off $5 spendage here & there...

lol pineapples... LPG is where it's at, blood rags only :P

Its funny average familys are struggling. The average middle class wage is 50-60k they rekon.

If you were earning 35k and you have 6 kids you prolly shouldnt have brought your $400,000 house and your SS commodore.

but reading paper today, they $1.70cpl was due to the high oil price 2 weeks ago and it should start comming down over the next few weeks.

No we wont, we live in a democracy.
If the policy is shit, the next guy who promises shit will be voted in.
+ Fuel prices are related to interest rates. Inflation is due (to a certain extent), to rising oil prices and therefore, production costs. Meaning trucks taking stock to places, machines etc will cost more for firms and therefore the prices are passed on to consumers. It is having a significant impact on interest rates.
Not to mention Melbourne's water is around the 29% mark as of today. Water price hike?
+ Apparently now there's a gas shortage too :(

EDIT - had to fix that spelling, that was terrible

Cutting excise ain't going to do shit. So you take 10 cents per litre off. That's 6 bucks a tank in a Falcodore, even less is some 4 banger econobox. At 10 litres per hundred it saves you 1 cent a km. Whoopdeefarkindo. Within a few months some derka derka will go blow himself up next to a oil line, an earthquake will knock a few refineries in China offline, a hurricane will knock a few refineries in the Gulf of Mexico offline, McCain will win the US election and **** the economy up even more while still fighting derka derkas or Obama will win and just **** shit up cos he's got about as many ideas as Rudd the dudd. All of which will wipe the 10 cent saving out over night as some wanker on Wall Street panics. Or better yet they just throw another tax on in a few years anyway telling us it's some bullshit green tax to help save the whales.

I agree the GST on fuel excise is a load of shit. But cutting it ain't going to do shit. Everyone needs to see it for what it is; a vote grabber. Like half the shit that pollies talk about. The other half is to fatten their own wallets.

The world is fucked. The next 50 years are going to be reeeeaaaal fun. Enjoy it while it lasts guys. I'm armed so I don't give a shit. No leeching when TSHTF but.

I heard on the news last night the petrol might hit $8 a liter by 2018. There were people saying that they were going to use public transport and buy mopeds and all that.

I say that is excellent news, less people on the roads means I can drive my car in peace. It will cost a fortune but I won't mind.

i would mind it costing $8, i would have to save up for a month just to go to the shops for groceries!

it is all just a revenue raising scheme for the government, thats what annoys me the most about it, the fact that the price doesnt have to be so high, if it had to be so expensive it wouldnt bother me as much...

I see oil went up 3 dollars today to 116 which you know is a massive price hike from the 155 it was at, but fuel price in melb is now 1.56cpl. Feel sorry for u melbourne people 1.47cpl up here is still too high.

compared to perth the ass end of the world, its 142cpl

comparing fuel price to where oil 116 per barrel same time in may this year, fuel should be 141-142 everywhere. Melbourne is missing out

The petrol companies blame it on the "fuel price cycle". Prices go up wednesday and slowly come down over the week.

Mondays/Tuesdays lately have been 142-143 cents compared to the 155-156 you see today. If your not smart enough to fill up early during the week then you deserve paying extra!
