Will this be the engine that the V6 XR6T gets?

Postby TUFED6 » September 1st, 2008, 9:25 am

http://jalopnik.com/5042696/going-in%2Bdepth-with-fords-twin%2Bturbocharged-v6-ecoboost-engine

Some of the article doesn't seem technically correct; Oil squirters are news? Electronic Boost Controller isn't a BOV...

Interesting anyway.

Most people wont care what engine is under the bonnet, if it helps sales then I'm all for it.

The Falcon is doomed if they don't do something to make it more profitable.

I'm sure all the manifolds will change when its adapted for RWD, but interesting that it uses an alloy inlet and the exhaust is set up for TD06 style turbo flange.

Edit: and no variable exhaust cam timing!?

I agree re sales and making it more profitable, but im not sure this is the best way to do it yet. Globalizing parts obviously makes them cheaper but its no longer an aussie built/designed engine. Manufacturing/engineering in Australia is dying and we're losing a lot of jobs because we're not competitive in that space.

Exporting the falcon is something they should have been doing for a long time, along with the whole diesel thing. What about a half decent LPG injection offering?

What holden have done with the sportswagon is what ford should have done with their own wagon - shrink it a bit, so it doesnt eat up territory sales. Holden have a much more aggressive sales/marketing approach and this is why they will continue to dominate sales figures.

Do you think anyone really cares that its not an aussie engine? Or that manufacturing/engineering jobs will be lost?

You would like to think so but doubt it.

Thats the thing, people should care that Australian jobs are getting lost, I think the media and their constant 'big fuel hungry car bashing' shit certainly doesn't help either.

Ford Aus aren't allowed to export to anywhere Ford US does, it's a long-standing rule that's killing Ford Oz. The only thing that will ever change that is Ford US changing their minds. There's still talk (as always) about Ford US using the Falcon platform for large US RWD cars, like what Holden do with the Camaro, which would at least give Ford a reason to keep engineering the Falcon.

At least it looks like the Duratec/Ecoboost 3.5L V6's for Falcons will be made at Cleveland Engine Plant #1 :D

Its a shame that it won't be made here in Australia, but it looks like a brilliant engine in TT form. I'd have one.

That timing chain is nothing... Check out the chain on the 427 SOHC Cammer... 7ft long!

I wonder if the V6 and V8 will share common parts such as bellhousings and driveline parts...

depends what you call 'bigger'
Falcon is longer
Mondeo is a smidge wider
Mondeo is higher

Falcon is a good 100-150kg heavier

And it has a TDi engine available, but it's still FWD.

And it's not Australian!

I've been reading a bit more about the Ecoboost engine, it does some pretty crazy shit. If you look at the piston, it has a small chamber recessed into the crown. During ultra-lean running, the fuel is injected into the small chamber while the piston is about 1/2 way up on the compression stroke. It keeps the burn controlled and away from the cylinder walls which keeps the piston much cooler, so it allows AFR's of up to 60:1.

Makes me angry when people tout this as a feature. Need Sam Kekovich to crack some heads. I'm sorry but those Mondeos look like shit. Even the Focus is pretty uggers.

Yeah thats crazy hey, You would think having a piston with a crown shaped that strangely would do all kinds of horrific things for detonation. I guess they have it sussed tho.

Oops. Yeah that should read 'But it's not Australian!'. :?

If I had the cash I'm pretty sure I'd be picking a G6ET over a Mondeo. An Australian-built Focus might be a good choice in a couple of years though.

I would rather a V6 falcon then no falcon...

...besides, twin turbo V6, imagine what you could do with that! The Engine being global means that the madnutters in europe and America will develop nice parts that aussies can use!

Australia loose the engine manufacturing, but gain another car to be built in australia, and its a better thing to have 3 whole cars (falcon/territory/focus) built in australia, as it's more of a reason to keep injecting money here. The US unions are one thing stopping ford export to america, plus the aussie doller makes it a bit expensive.

galapogos01 wrote:Maybe the mondeo wont be the only FWD car...

Long winded speculation, the Mondeo has the large FWD market covered, the falcon will be RWD, otherwise you'ld loose a market segment, and loose the sucsessful ute and territory...

If the 2010 V6 XR6T can't match/ better the current one in every aspect it should be shit-canned IMO. Why **** with a already awesome engine and replace it with shit one? Kinda reminds me of the VL to VN transition, its just for the $$$.

Because the current 4lt does not meet Euro IV Emmissions. Its a Cast Iron Block still, and its too much money and prolly not very good to convert the Inline 6 to a Ally block.

LS6 or the Gen IVs are fully ally

And its not that is big carbon emmision producing motor its some stupid shit how it takes 30secs longer to heat up to operating temp which is not withing the standards

thats bascily it.

-Cost on upgrades, it cost too much in R&D to update the engine, its only used in Aus
-Possible export, having the global v6 helps export plans
-having a shorter block means the design of the falcon can change, less length out front etc.

It's sad to see it go, but geez it's for the better, and not like a shit kent idea like dropping the V8, so people shouldn't whinge.

It's amazing that the same basic motor config has been in the car for 40+years...
