Wat is your average fuel consumption at ?

Postby vey » May 4th, 2009, 5:20 pm

hey guys , bought a 89 fairmont ghia yesterday as my first car (lol wrong move for a student) , just wondering what is your average fuel consumption , my trip computer gives weird ass readings and it has been from 13.8 on the day i bought it which was mixed traffic and highway driving.

however driving it around short distances its killing me with 17's  . whats also weird is i notice the fuel dropping substantially for instance driving to the shops and it moves like 1 cm down just for a 800 meter drive. :glare:

what should it be around for a normal falcon?

ps the cars only done 90 000 k's and serviced ext (owned by old farts).

thanks in advance

turbo + fun = 300-350km per tank of Prem Fuel
turbo + normal = 350-400km per tank of Prem Fuel
turbo + freeway = 520km per tank of Prem Fuel was calculated @ 12L/100km
turbo + freeway + nearly zero boost = 555km per tank of Prem Fuel

I get about 475 from a tank of fuel in the EL 5L. Thats with a few good kicks in the guts on the way to and from work. Seems to be awesome on fuel which is unusual but im not complaining.

and about 450 for the EB off boost on boost its about 300 lol.

I have no idea why its dropped so low recently..
I have a Wade 1673, extractors, exhaust, 3" intake, KnN, shaved head (not much), J3 chip with an XR6/custom tune, thru a T5 to a 3.45LSD... sits on about 2200rpm @100kmhr.
So no, not stock.., and I dont drive like a granny either..
I got 750kms from my last tank......

Mine's about 12L/100kms I think.

The most I've ever got out of a tank is 700kms, and I fuelled up pretty much as soon as it started beeping (roughly 80km left) so that was amazing economy that time. That was the Glenmaggie weekend the year before last where I went to Phillip Island, then Glenmaggie, then back to Oakleigh.

my EF 4L sits on about 13.7 most of the time but has copped more of a flogging than usual lately and has jumped up to 15.2...usually sees 5500rpm a few times each day so its not tooo bad on fuel.

EA Trip Computers are the dodgiest shitheaps ever. Just put a clock in or something.

They go to 99.9 when idling, electronics engineers at Ford/VDO in the 80's were on the hashish/ganja/charas. If you live in a hilly area like me and drive lots of short distance you will see between 17-22L on one of those TC's as your average.

Anyone ever have a XF Ghia/ZL/FE with a "systems test panel"? ... epic lols.

the trip going to 99.9 is beacause if you are stopped. to get 100km is never going to happen so your going to use infinate fuel

Yeah but it was fixed up by ED I think, to read 1.7 or something at idle.

I have no idea what i get out of the XR8 yet, cos I am too cheap to actually fill it up all the way! All I know is that I managed to do 380-something kms on 3 quarters of a tank driving it back from Morewll. Gets around 130ish to half a tank around town. All on premium.

Are you guys resetting your average fuel consumption each time you fill the tank or just leaving it?

With my ED the instantanious consumption figure goes up to 99 when stationary, but my NF would go down to zero/1.

I'm getting an average of 9.8L/100k's when treating the ED nicely, but most of the time it'll sit on around 12L/100k's because I can't help but wind it out in second and third all the time! :P

Remember that the trip computers were made by the lowest bidder, so don't trust them too much...
My wife once ran out of fuel in the NF, and complained because the DTE said 30k's left!

I usually just leave mine.

I don't trust the trip computer entirely, but I don't trust the fuel gauge entirely either. Even still I have had the trip computer down to 12kms left in the tank.

As Sunny said, EA-EBII (ED?) trip computers sit on 99 when idling, but it's because it is calculating that you'll use an infinite amount of fuel to travel 100kms when you're sitting on 0kph. Why yours is on 99 all the time I have no idea. When cruising you should see it anywhere between 2-3L (coasting downhill) to 99 (flat throttle, low speed).

The average consumption settles out over time, but if you reset it it'll be pretty sensitive at first. For city driving + 3 speed, 17L/100kms sounds reasonable, and 13.8/100kms sounds fine for mixed driving.

Whatever the bug is with the instantaneous reading, just ignore it mate. Focus on the average.
