i think its stated clearly in the users guide not to do what you did.
Due to people usually being dead after it happens, There probably isnt many people on here who have done it.

one time, me and a fellow worker had a land rover on a 2-post hoist and were trying to get some rubber ring sorta thingy off the driveshaft that acts like a uni joint. We had to jack the diff up so it was easier to get the bolts out and ring off.
so we got a floor jack and a pole, then put the pole on the bottom of the diff and started jacking the diff up. the diff was jacked up to about 3/4 of full suspension travel, and then all of a sudden the pole slipped out of the jack, and dropped the diff and rocked the absolute **** out of the car on the hoist and I was standing directly underneath it. so lucky that it stayed up on that hoist(the only thing holding the car is 4 arms on the seals).

so yeah..that was my near death experience. Probly didnt make sense but yeah.

NEVER get under a car without at least some blocks of wood to stop the car from falling if the jack fails.

Buy some safety stands, super cheap sell some them for like $50 or less.

I guess I could of said that better, I meant if you really really need to work under a car cos you were stuck and don't have safety stands around, get some decent pieces of wood and stack them up as a minimum, don't just use nothing... make sure its stable etc and keep both the jack and the wood there... I didn't mean use them instead of safety stands which someone could of thought I meant.....

I've had to do it before, wood is better than nothing at all ;-)

And safety stands are a lot safer.

if i lift my car up and take the front or back wheels off, i always lay the wheels under the side skirts of the car. if the jack/stands fail, car falls onto a rim. fucks the rim, but at least im around to bitch about it happening.

WOOD SAVED ME SOME BROKEN RIBS

When i was replacing my clutch we had the front wheels on car ramps and axle stands under the car with the rear wheels off under the car too for some added security. My old man has some peices of hardwood timber that are about 75x250x300
all was good while the car was on stands but when we were lowering it down, with the wheels on of course (threw a spare under the car for some peice of mind) and had the timber under the tires one peice either side, the diff slide off the jack while i was under the rear bar. the big white bitch came down and landed on the peices of timber thank **** and the spare while it only got me by the car compressing the suspension with the sudden drop the towball and rear bar got me a beauty and made me quite sore for a few days. once i relised i wasn't dead i shuffled out from the rear bar and proceded kick the rear bar only once though. scared me, scared my m8 more and completly scared the **** out of his gf now if we are jacking up a car she wont hang around.
It pays to have some decent sized blocks of hardwood timber under your tires when lowering back down it might just save you a visit to the hospital

In rescue its a saying that you "pack as you jack" we use very sturdy hard wood timber in a square formation.

Doesnt matter what method of jacking were doing E.g Air bags, Hydrolic, or mechanical we always pack.

I had a scissor jack collapse under the ED as I was putting an axle stand under it, but only got the stand halfway so it pushed up through the floor. I had grazes on my arm from the sill falling down onto it as i pulled my arm out quick as a flash. My car was very very low at the time, I was very very lucky.

Went and bought a trolley jack the next day. :)

I've been under my EL on stands as I watched one under Gozza's car fail. In the first instance I thought "I'm gettin' the fark outta here!" but after a couple of seconds I thought I'd be pretty unlucky for two to fail in a few minutes, so I stayed and kept working.
